Painted Routh's face onto the welling manip. Still could be considered a work in progress and the face looks just as much like Routh as the previous manip looked like Welling, but you get the idea. There's still something buzzingly wrong about it I know, too tired to make adjustments though. Till tomorrow.

Based on Batgirl's comments, I'd say the S-shield will be about the same size as the George Reeves version, at least. Which is fine by me. That emblem size is just right: small enough not to take up so much of the actor's chest, but big enough that it can be seen from a distance and still be prominent.

C'mon people! Get real this is the look Singer will settle on. No way is he going to use some of those lame suits that have been described on these boards. Look how awesome the Classic is. This just shows how timeless and correct the Classic costume is. :)
I know that these aren't exactly manips but I don't have access to Photoshop any more.
So I figured I'd try the next best thing to get an idea of what the suit would or could look like based on the descritions.
Now pardon the extreem geekdom of this but well;
I made the \S/ so that it starts around the collar bone and goes to the bottom of the pecks, similar to Batgirls description. This is probably bigger then what we will get but it gives you an idea of how big it could be within the demensions given.
Also this is using a regular t-shirt to get an idea of what the collar could look like.
I'm having some trouble with photobucket right now so I'll have to do this as attatchments.
Shots with the collar higher and lower;

If you don't like it don't read it. simple solution huh?
Why do people always say this? It doesn't make sense. How would I know that I don't like it unless I read it first? I can't judge the content of your statement until I know what that statement is, and I don't know what that statement is until I read it. Duh.

I really want to like this design, and I hope it'll just grow on me after I see the movie a few times, but seriously, what is the design advantage over just a purely classic rendition that look EXACTLY like say this comic:

All of the changes are just too distracting to me. I really don't see how they modernize or compliment anything.

I'm about to get get nitpicky here, but I don't care. Changing the belt buckle to a diamond shaped Superman S, a cape that goes all the way down to Superman's feet, not to mention the wierd way it attaches to the "t-shirt" collar, the wierd new "slant" to the boots that go up the calf, the diamond patterning all over the whole thing, as well as the lack of S on the cape go beyond fine-tuning and constitute a virtual "new look" for the man of steel of which its aesthetic value is HIGHLY arguable in my opinion. I know, I know, a lot of people would say "really, WHO CARES you crazy fanboy?" Well obviously not those people, but the fans of how Superman looks in the comic do, so what difference does it make to them how Superman looks anyway? And it I will not keep stressing that it is absolutely possible to use the comic book look as a strict benchmark in making a good superman suit "fine tuning" from there as you say, and end up with a result that is just as impressive as these new design descriptions if not BETTER. What it comes down to is this question: Does anyone here really like this new suit better then the typical classic costume as seen in the comic I posted?

My absolute would be a darker(not as dark as Spidey) blue, deeper red, goldish yellow, Spidey meterial and a Alex Ross 'S'
but...
I watched the extras on my X1.5 DVD last night and they had an interview with the 'sir' playing Magneto (forgot the name). He had the following to say about BS: "he does'n know everything and he doesn't pretend to know everything...but comparing to most directors, Bryan's got great taste...."
They showed this as he had a look at Magneto's helmet and the adjustments Bryan recomended.
He's gonna be hands-on in the development of the suit.
I believe they're gonna(or had) try different concepts and takes on the suit, but I do believe that wichever suit they're going to use are gonna please fans and the public and I do believe it's going to look great.

They showed this as he had a look at Magneto's helmet and the adjustments Bryan recomended.
He's gonna be hands-on in the development of the suit.
I believe they're gonna(or had) try different concepts and takes on the suit, but I do believe that wichever suit they're going to use are gonna please fans and the public and I do believe it's going to look great.
i think they may have had a few concepts, and then got to there final one with the process of elimination.watch spidy 2 documentory where they were trying all sizes of emblem. the same would probably have happend with this.also what may look good on paper or in fact in real life may not have looked good on screen.Bottom line is we have to wait and see what there final choice is and hope we like it.also i hope every damn bit of the suit design is on the dvd, what a great documentory it could be just on the suit.
hell i am at the stage where i want a documentory on how they take there tea/coffe :D

Just finished watching Superman the movie with director commentary. I gotta say, the advances in effects notwithstanding, Singer is going to have one HELL of a task making a movie that stands up to what Donner did in 1978. Donner made "Superman." Lock stock and barrel. And hey, if this new movie sucks, at least there was one time in history when someone got it right :) I'm at the point right now where I'm tired of discussing possible suits vs ideal suits. I think I'll wait until we see the real thing to make my judgement. And man will with boards be fired up when that happens :)

I was thinking of allmost the same thing. They could make 2 DVD's of just extra's! Think of all the screentests done for this movie, all the actors in different costumes...the different suits....this under the fans, may sell better than the actual movie! :D
Also just want to wait and see how it turns out, no one can predict.
I am a little confused by all this actually. Didn't Singer say a while ago, as in before Routh was cast, that the suit was already designed and all they neede to do was the fittings?

I really want to like this design, and I hope it'll just grow on me after I see the movie a few times, but seriously, what is the design advantage over just a purely classic rendition that look EXACTLY like say this comic:
http://www.comune.modena.it/glamazonia/immagini/superman.jpg
All of the changes are just too distracting to me. I really don't see how they modernize or compliment anything.
THIS would be "distracting"?

from what we're hearing, routh's chest kinda does that so maybe that's why they went with the smaler symbol. but a manip that gdw did of a symbol on routh's real chest was pretty much right on according to batgirl so maybe it won't look as small as we're all thinking

gdw's "S" symbol is almost exactly what I was trying to describe how to manipulate the "S" I liked from Starving Artist's manips. Compressed vertically to fit better on the actor's chest (maybe slightly more than I was thinking) without dwarfing the muscles like the bigger version of it did.
The slightly lower positioning implied by BatGirl would look even better and be pushed out more by the chest.

Blade Runner
02-02-2005, 09:50 PM
The costume posted above is almost a 100% right, but on his belt, its just the diamond shape, not the actual symbol. The colors are almost perfect to, blood red, with royal blue. And the yellow is a blend between gold and yellow. The costume's material, and its overall design will look alien, being that it's design came from krypton.
Actually when Jim Lee was working out how he was drawing Superman, he played around with a diamond shaped buckle. He drew a circle in it too, but he toyed with the \/ shape too.
Wait, Blade Runner you have a source? Cool, so you concure with Batgirls description? So there's no actual S in the belt?

Ok I'm starting to not buy this. Sorry Blade Runner. Unless it's just a difference of opinion on the size of the \S/. Everyone else is at least in agreement that it is smaller then Reeve's was.
As for an updated version of Reeve's, I don't get what that means. The only thing that really set Reeve's \S/ apart was how it was warped with the stitching. Other then that it's more or less a slightly thin classic \S/.
Is there anything else you could tell us that might help to understand what you mean by it? Thanks.

Dude, what the hell. Every "source" is saying different things. This is getting so ridiculous.
Yeah, for some reason I'm puting faith in Batgirl on this one, maybe it's just because her description seems to be satisfying and I just want it to be the right one ;)
Although it doesn't really clash with Enigma2K's so much as there is a diference in opinion about how it looks/sounds. The \S/ size is sounding debatable. Although Batgirl is just giving us what her source has seen, I believe, where as it sounds like Enigma's is claiming to have actually seen the suit. Also Enigma's description is from a bit back now and it is likely that the suit was slightly modified with regards to the \S/ and trunks size since he last saw it.
As for Enig's "\S/ that fit's in your hand' claims I would say that it is most likely an exaguration based on opinion and perception. It sounds like he just finds the \S/ to be too small. Also if he has only seen the costume not on a body then the \S/ would look come across as a lot smaller.
I made two \S/ by folding a piece of 8.5x11 paper and when placed on my chest they actually looked great size wise and also fit the proportions described; Nipple to nipple and bellow my collar bone to the bottom of my pecks.
They look like they would be too small when they are by themselves but when actually seen on a body they look great. Very good size and very just, what's the word, they just stand out and scream Superman.
Well, hopefully we'll see in the next month or two. God please please please.

King, as I stated before. The Reeve suit didn't look like that, at least the blue suit didn't. Although I think some of the 80's era Superman cartoons (or at least the box artwork) and some other artwork I saw growing up was that color.
Watch the Superman TM DVD or look for some of the nice screengrabs people use from it to see the color of the blue. It was MUCH deeper than that colorization.
It only appeared something like that color in FX shots. Again, the DVD corrected the color for the original, but not the sequels. Unless they re-colored the whole movie or at least the suit in the entire movie, and not just the shots affected by using a green suit in front of bluescreen and trying to light it back to blue. Your colorization does match Superman saving the Russian cosmonauts quite well in Superman IV.:)
Keep in mind too that old shots and VHS and Laserdisc transfers were probably much brighter than the DVD's (correct) presentation. That would also make the suit look too light. And the sequel DVD releases weren't given much care at all.
I have no objection to the suit being a bit darker than Reeve's, but I don't think it should go as dark as Cain's. One thing I worry about with darkening the suit is it won't have the same flash. The first time the public saw him in the suit in STM was priceless and perfect. "Hey, man. That is a bad outFIT!" Reeve's presence and just the fact that such a big guy could carry those bright primary colors made you instantly respect him as the man of steel. I'm afraid if they try too hard to make him look bad-ass, and don't quite pull it off the audience won't believe it. Hard to explain. In the first movie it was just, BAM! That's Superman! That's quite a feat to repeat. I don't want it to be "Look at that pretty-boy trying to look cool in that bad-ass looking outfit." The original movie somehow successfully made the idea bigger than the suit itself. That's why all the obsessive detailng scares me a bit.
That and the fact they're probably going for an "edgier" Superman which I'm not sure will work. Then again, I didn't like Brosnan's first outing as Bond when he wasn't clean-shaven through the whole movie!! His unkempt look ruined it for me. I couldn't believe him as Bond. But, some say that was his best outing.

Darker shades of red and blue will only look stronger on film. That's it. They're not there to make him "dark" or "edgy" or "intimidating." All the colors will do on film is look richer and deeper than the old suit did.
And again, dark blue's been used on Superman before (Fleischer, WB-Timm, Superman merchandising, Kingdom Come). We've even seen dark red in the comics at times and in the Fleischer cartoons. So why should it be verboten to try darker red and blues in live-action? I don't get this line of thinking.

POLICE are hunting three not-so superheroes who have been on the run for more than a month since attacking a fireman.
Superman, Batman and Spider-Man were caught on CCTV before becoming involved in a brawl at a burger van in Canterbury, Kent, in the early hours of Christmas Day.
Police said the fight was thought to have broken out when the van ran out of food.
A 23-year-old fireman - not wearing uniform - was punched by the reveller dressed as Superman during the altercation, and suffered a broken nose.
Maybe it really WAS Superman!

Killer treads on Superman's boots, darker colors, an edgier superman does not make sense. He's not supposed to be dark or intimidating.
dark blue and red is used in the animated serious as well. it's not meant to look intimidating.. it's meant to look better onscreen and film.

They can do wonders with good lighting. The Blue in the colour corrected Directors cut of STM is in some instances perfect imo. I don't think it will be as dark as a lot of people seem to believe it will be. They will achieve a lot of your "Richer and deeper" look with lighting.

That's good news about the cape. I think the longer cape makes him more regal/heroic looking.

For pics of Routh, go to BrandonRouth.com; there's a few pics of him there you can use for manips. As for the suit description, go back a few pages, and you'll see some insiders describe it.

I went back but couldn't really find a description, so I went by the complaints about the changes rather than the description. So I don't know how accurate this is. I made the S smaller, a bit more gold, added an S for the buckle and of course Brandon is there now. If there was more to the changes than this, tell me and I'l see if I can change it if I get time.

I would like it if it didn't have the high collar. It just doesn't look right. I can deal with the belt however I don't think there should be an "S" on it, there should only be one "S" and that's on the chest. The colors look good though.

Make the belt \S/ smaller, two-toned cape, darker lower portion of boots, lighter M porition of boots, no collar, less gold in \S/, add treads to boots. Basically, this picture right here.

why are all the colouring jobs and manips putting the top part of the boots bright red?
Did I miss that part of the description? I think it looks better if the boots are all the one shade of (blood) red. The brighter red should just be for the inside of the cape, IMO.
