My first manip. Many will hate me for this, but it's relevant in terms of how the suit can look (with the right guy; yeah I'm a Wellingite... don't flame me, we've been through enough, haven't we?)
I'm new to this, so it's got flaws, but thought you'd wanna see it. (Apologies to everybody who's pieces I used)

Breck, they should have hired you when they were designing the suit. Not only does the supersuit look good, Routh actually looks like Superman.
I believe by the time the film comes out, most people will have gotten used to the actual suit. That's probably why WB is releasing a photo so soon before the movie comes to the theaters, so it will grow on people.
Despite this, in my mind the picture above is how I'll PROBABLY always imagine Routh's Superman.
Mr. Singer I'm really disappointed in you!

Pardon me, my friend, but the manip you are referring to is indeed beautiful and is now my wallpaper, but you must realise that the reason it looks so good is not the larger insigna. The guy who did the manip bulked up Routh's neck, chest and arms, trimmed his hair, made his ears, mouth and nose smaller and gave him a stronger jawline, in addition to darkening his eyebrows. Now, while I think the manip is perfect, it is not indicative (as he himself has said) of what Routh could have looked like. That's not Routh. The reason it's such a good Superman manip is because the guy was "genetically engineered" to look like a Superman.

Well people, I'd just like to say, I spose we should all be happy that something like this is provoking the passionate reaction that it is. What this means is everyone, no matter their opinion, actually cares. And ****, thats something.
I wanted to be excited about this thing. I spent all day hoping, believing it would grow on me. Well 13 hours later, my opinion has't changed.
That said, its also telling just what type of movie Singer seems to be making. I think its a case of trying to please all (just read the synopsis, and then compare it to the costume) This is a case of an attempt of making Superman 'cool' again. Making it so old blue is not a 'joke' anymore. I for one say that all it took was one man, who left us last year, regardless of the outfit he was wearing to stop them from laughing...
This costume quite frankly saddens me. This is something most fans have been waiting a decade for. And with every new superhero movie 'reimagining' the character, I for one hoped for this not just to 'reimagine' but to 'redefine' how Supehero movies were made. Just like the original did 30 years ago.
Well thats my two cents.
Would love to hear what you guys think, although I'm sure your all posted out!

I've said it before and I'll say it again I love the new suit and yesterday I showed it to my mate who isn't a Superman fan (but he doesn't dislike him) and he asked me when it is coming out because he is now dying to see it. I love the suit.

thats funny because all your complaining and whining is making me sad. Especially when the majority of the manips only change the tones of the suit and the size of the S, and one of those things is massively affected by the lighting in the picture, so really the majority of the fans here only have one major cause for complaint, and thats the S. Eh, I'm done with this. People want to boycott the movie, people want to try and destroy the movie, go ahead, you won't get very far in your attempts to thwart the movie, but hey, thats your bag, not mine. Me? I've been behind this movie since day 1, and I'll be behind this movie 100% until June 30th 2006, in which case my faith will either pay off (the likely option) or I'll be dissapointed and I will say as much. In the mean time, enjoy your negativity.

Ugh... What you guys want is Dean Cain, the uber insignia looked bad back then... I like the suit, I have problems with the belt-bukcle but I won't dislike this film for such a detail! Heck if you guys don't want to see this film. They've made 4 Superman movies before watch those to infinite if you want to. Chris Reeve has passed away, it's sad, he was perfect Routh has uber-sized boots to fill. (Dean Cain clearly couldn't) But I'll prefer watching this baby to Superman III-IV. I think the angle they choose doesn't make the suit look good tough. We are sort of looking up at a guy in tights. They should have chosen one where we are equal to him. A shot of him changing from Clark to Supes would have been better, also. Sort of revealing the suit slowly. Anyways, can't wait for the trailer!

I don't think ANYONE wants the Dean Cain suit, that thing was God awful. As to the suit, the ONLY major problem is how small the insignia is. I can live with the rest. The shade of blue is MUCH better than what Reeve had.

why are you assuming that just because most of the people here dislike certain aspects of the suit that we immediatly dismiss the movie as well, the movie hasn't come out yet. But Superman is Superman becaues of it's costume, u can't alter the long history behind it. Making the emblem a small symbol doesn't symbolize who Superman is, a grand character. This is called a forum, it won't be a forum if everybody just pretend that everything is OK about the suit and be all "it's a Superman, we have to like it no matter what", what makes me sick is people like u who judge people because they have opinions, the fact that u don't see anything wrong with the suit is really alarming, either ur not that all much of a Superman fan or u just don't care. Either way, enjoy your denial

WTF? FIRST OF ALL, I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU GIVE A FLIP ABOUT WHAT I SAY ABOUT WB; THEY'VE SCREWED UP EVERY SUPERHERO MOVIE THEY'VE EVER TOUCHED.
SECOND, 'BRECK' CHANGED A HELLUVA LOT MORE THAN THE "\S/" , ON THE COSTUME; THAT IS WHAT MADE IT PERFECT. LOOK AT THE COSTUME FOR 'SPIDER-MAN', FOR INSTANCE: THEY MADE A "MUSCLE SUIT" IN THE FIRST MOVIE, AND INTEGRATED IT INTO THE SUIT FOR THE SECOND. NONE OF THE STUNT GUYS....OR TOBEY..... HAD THE CORRECT BUILD, SO THIS WORKED PERFECTLY. ALL 'BRECK' DID WAS SHOW WHAT THE SUIT COULD LOOK LIKE, IF THE SAME TECH WAS USED FOR THE NEW 'SUPERMAN' SUIT. SURE, HE FILLED OUT BRANDON'S JAWLINE, AND CHANGED HIS HAIR, BUT THAT WASN'T ENOUGH TO SELL ME ON THE OVERALL LOOK; THE MANIP JOB ON THE SUIT/MUSCLES DID THAT.

That's just draw-droppingly, eye-wateringly great! The perfect combination of colours, and the ideal design!
Best of all, rather than a fanciful design, it looks like something that could be easily achievable. If Singer were still able to make a change to the costume at this point in production I wonder if he would swallow his pride and accede to this suggestion.
I'd certainly like to hope he would.

http://www.development-hell.com/media_images/9_bigimage_BIG%20ASS%20SUPERMAN.png looking at this now, the emblem is on this pic is bigger than the one on the Real Suit. I would have been happy with the size of the emblem on this pic
Acutally, I think it is the same size. It just seems smaller in the acutal one because you're looking at it from below. If you look at where the bottom point of the emblem is on the picture and the one with Routh, it's the same.

The undies look like grannie pants imo. With mine, I was trying to just incorporate them into the leggings rather then make them look like it was an actual pair of underwear on the suit. The actual singer suit I think makes routh look like some kind of male stripper or something.

I really didn't spend all the much time on this one, I could have developed it a lot more and after looking it over, I think that making the undies part of the leotard would be kidding one's self. The guy wear's underwear ont he outside, any attempt to try and hide it or change it just is a cop out, so I'm all for giving him the actual undies. I'm also not a fan of the S I put on his chest. All in all I think I'm gonna go back and work on it. I wanted to bring out more definiton in his muscles anyway.
I do like the belt though. If they had to change something about the costume to update it, I'd like the kind of belt I came up with.

Set the layer to "multiply" if you want white areas to become transparent.

Wildezc, Why Does Lex Have Hair?
Because he will most likely have hair in the film. Gene Hackman had hair in Superman 1 and 2, and Spacey's Lex will probably be based on Hackman's Lex.
Also, it would take a lot of work to erase his hair, paint in a bald head, and make it look real. So I just let him keep his hair!

Great idea for a manip, though.
No, but putting a bright red against a dull blue completely offsets the suit and makes it look too "cartoony". In the Fleischer episodes I have he has a very dull colored blue, I also toned it down a bit to make it look very 1930's era since that's a time that wasn't known for it's bright and flashy colors.
Ever see Sky Captain? I shot for that kinda "dulled down" look. I wanted to make it look as real as possible without adding the comic book coloring to it.

That just looks wayyy better. Jeez, if his hair was just parted the right away and the maroon/purple changed to a brighter shade of red, BR's look would just be so much better. Even if he's not as built as much as he should be, even if they have the S-buckle, even if the collar's too high, even if the S emblem is "too small", etc etc... Just a change in the hair and the red and sooo many people would like it more.

Ok, so I admit to not reviewing all 486 pages of this thread and am coming to the party kind of late. I did check out the most recent pages and am leaning towards StarvingArtist's manip as my favorite. I was without Photoshop this weekend and just now had the opportunity to attempt some manips.
I have two unique contributions:
1) I kept the \S/ on the belt, but filled in the holes so it appears to be a bevel on top of a solid buckle.
2) I reduced the height of the \S/ on the shield. Instead of the whole thing being raised by an eigth of an inch from his chest/shield background - the 3-d S/Shield rises from a flush background.
Although I raised his boots, enlarged supes' chest emblem, and adjusted colors - I got tired and didn't finish the other desired changes (straight neck, higher belt, higher thighs, and sharper/smoother boots edges) - maybe later.

Not a chance. There will be at least two more movies in each franchise before a Batman vs Superman movie. If I were making the calls and pulling the strings, I'd gradually pull the look of each franchise closer toward a middle ground over the course of the sequels. That way, there's not as much of a shock for BvS.

What I mean is:
I know that this is the real suit, just tired of the overused lenseflare fx.
I was all exited by Brandon Routh when I saw him as Clark Kent, and I couldnt wait for the official pic of him in the suite, When I first saw the low quality picture I thought it was a joke. I also thought that picture didnt look like Brandon Routh.
The brown long hair, small logo, the "red" color and no subtle muscle definition, "the me,myself and Irene butt crack" just bugs me.
Although I cant wait for the film, I'm sure it is going to be great, I can get used to the suit and all that.
I showed the orginal photo to my kids, and they said WOW its Superman. And kids never lie......

Truthfully, I wouldn't have minded a complete redesign of the suit for the movie. Especially since Superman is returning from a long trek in outer space - a different suit could have emphasized just how much things had changed since he left Earth. And for all the fans: as the story line progressed, Superman could overcome a major challenge and then return to something that more resembled his classic look and colors.

Wow nice manip. I wonder if that's the "other" space suit that they use instead of the "death of superman" one, which is cool too. Could you make a black/silver one too, or also an electric one if they ever go down that way for the sequel?

well, there are probably loads of different methods, but I use the lasso tool to 'cut' out the sections that I want to re-colour, paste those into a new document, adjust the hue/saturation of the colour in the new doc, then copy the new doc back into the original image replacing the old colour areas.
Sounds long winded but works quite well. The only draw back is you need to be quite neat abd tidy when using the lasso tool.
Would be good if others could post their methods here too. That way we could all learn.

I posted some general instructions in this thread (http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showthread.php?t=173006&page=4&pp=25). Pretty much the only adjustments I use are the Hue/Saturation and the Levels. I don't recommend the Contrast/Brightness controls. You have to really play with the Levels controls to try to keep the details. Sometimes those three triangle thingies are all clustered to one side or the other, other times they are spread out with only the middle one slid over. Try many different extremes before settling on what works best.
I also try to avoid doing anything destructive: so instead of going to Image->Adjustments->Whatever, I put the layer I want to change inside a folder, set it to Normal, then add an adjustment layer using Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Whatever. This lets you go back and fine tune things over and over again without loosing quality.
When you must sacrifice details to get the proper color you can try duplicating the layer (or the folder the layer is in) and then using a blending mode such as Multiply, Darken, Overlay, Screen, or the Dodges with varying opacities. Sometimes it works better if you completely desaturate the top duplicated layer and play with the levels to make them more extreme. Othertimes it is better to put the desaturated layer underneath and set the top full color layer to a merge mode of Hue or Color or whatever (I generally scroll through all the options).
As for creating new cloth from scratch, it is usually best to copy it from somewhere else in the image, but the clone tool is pretty handy. However, often you loose the texture especially if you are cloning multiple different areas into the same place using different opacities. I understand CS has a better clone/texturing tool for this. I generally copy an existing section of the image that most closely follows the curves/highlights/shadows that I want and scale/rotate it as needed. I'll then go back in and use clone to add highlight/shadows or use the burn/dodge tool to do the same.
For example, the arm/leg cuffs were created using a slightly larger version of his arms/legs to ensure the shadows/contours were correct. One shoulder cape flip is a sliver of cloth from outside of his chest shield, the other cape flip is the entire big corner fold of his fluttering cape, shrunk and merged with the underlying shadows from his chest/arm.
I've uploaded a portion of my PSD if you want to dissect it layer by layer. The zip file is about 10MB (http://home.comcast.net/~balivandi/SHH/RouthSupermanNewCapeSmall.zip) (The original full PSD was about 42MB and too large to upload). I try to work with as high quality as possible, but this PSD is only 75% the size of the released photo because I wanted to do a manip where Routh's S was bigger. So instead of cutting out the S and enlarging it, I cut out the S and shrunk the rest of the image.
Basically, I don't have a specific formula I follow. I've got the basic techniques I've outlined above, but then diverge from them as needed. I try lots of different things until it looks right. Good luck!

Ok, B Not, as a huge fan of JLU I must say that your Justice Lords Superman manip is just beautiful. I also love the Bizzaro Routh manips.
All these manips of the suit are great, I love all of them. But, I've come to the conclusion that I like Singer's suit the way it is. It's not perfect by any means. I still think the sheild is a bit too small, but the overall look of the suit is great. Looking at all of these manips solidified my opinion that the color of Singer's suit is the way to go. I feel that the deeper red/maroon makes the suit more serious. While Superman isn't supposed to be dark, he shouldn't be comically light. The "classic red" works in the comics, perfectly. But in real life, that color always looks like a halloween costume. I'm not, by any means, bashing the manips or the classic Superman colors. They are all freaking amazing and better than anything I could ever do. I just think that the new suit, colors and all, works. It's just up to Routh make me believe he's Superman. If he can do that, I'll be happy.
Please don't hit me, I'm relatively new here.http://www.superherohype.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif
Keep up the amazing work. I love killing time and seeing peoples take on The Man of Steel.

The Max Fleschier Homage is gorgeous! I mean...wow, I am in love with it. I would have been completely satisified with that as the Superman costume for this movie -- oddly enough. Max Flescheir cartoons were my first experience with Superman when I was four -- the Mad Scienstist who would "stirke at midnight!" That is a wonderful manip. I was wondering, could you make it any bigger and/or possibly change the gold framed of the sheild to just a darker red. Perhaps...pretty please...

What do you think of THIS colour combination?
All I did was ran this through a filter to help account for the awful
lighting of the original photo. I didn't distort or alter the ratios of
colour in any way. (i.e. I didn't change the red while leaving the blue
untouched)
Would you be able to live with this if this is indeed how it looks on screen
due to better lighting conditions, plus the colour levelling in post-production?
(the original is on the left, my alteration is on the right)

aerodynamic??? i almost pill. it's the first time i heard people use aerodynamic to describe a briefs. btw, you know what aerodynamic mean, do you?
Have you ever seen professional swimming? The athletes wear tiny speedos not to impress teh ladies but because less clothing means less drag against the water, hence more aerodynamic to get a faster time. That's the same reason why they don't have hair on their bodies. It's obvious that singer is going for a swimmer look as opposed to a wrestler look. Since he will be flying a lot, it makes sense that they would "need" to be aerodynamic. I know that the cape wouldn't make sense then, but i think he was goign for the swimmer look regardless.
Yes I know what aerodynamic means.

not bad. I would've chnaged the black in the symbol to yellow though, but that's just my spin

I realize that, and to me, black shouldn't be in the symbol. I just thought yellow would look better; give it a more classic feel to it.

If you want classic then you don't want the Kingdom Come \S/, it isn't really classic.

I always liked the design of the Kingdome Come, but I was never a fan of the black part of it, being my opinion, I always thought that it always looked better with the classic red and yellow.

I'm just saying, man. The yellow doesn't work with it, I've seen manips and drawings and stuff.

Maybe this is why we have a Smaller S. When he raises his hands like that, a larger S almost obstructs his chest and shoulders....interseting..
