This is a masterpiece job right here. I've said it before man, but you are absolutely flawless in your "touch-ups".
This is my ideal image for Routh in future movies. It's not too much of a stretch of his current build, but it definitely makes a helluva difference in mere presence. Here, he just looks *strong*.

I cannot believe the difference what a thicker neck does for the whole look of Routh's physique.
... I think the new trunks look great, too! He just looks so much thicker, and so much more correct for the role with your additions, supersebas.

Well I don't wanna comment on it too much since I think both sides have been at it for so long and it's like "ENOUGH!", you know?
In any case, I don't see how ANYONE can look at your touch-up, and the original, and not see how yours is more closer to an ideal film translation of the comic. It's still the same suit with a few changes, it's still Routh (but a bit bigger), it's STILL everything else. And best of all, it's not that big of a stretch for Routh to get like that in the sequels.

Nice chief. See, if Routh's neck was thicker he'd be near perfect. I don't think the briefs need to be any bigger than the original picture, but I understand why.
No biggie though. Routh looks good, a slim neck won't bother me, especially not after getting over a bulky cowl, which was even harder to.
Oh yeah, am I the only one who thinks this looks somewhat like painting?

I can honestly say that I think Supersebas' "improvements" are ego-driven tosh. The original pics looked fine as they were; the enlarged emblem and Reeve trunks don't look good at all on the new costume (especially since an emblem that large woiuld be impossible to move in). This sick obsession with trying to Reeve-ize the suit has got to stop. And what he did to Iskandar Salim's Routh image was uncalled for. First, the man didn't want anyone monkeying with the image, and ignoring his request (at the bottom of virtually every image he's done) is out of line. Secondly, what kind of egomaniac do you have to be to claim you've "improved" another guy's work when it was perfectly good as is?
I'm not going to mince words with you, Supersebas... your head is too swollen for its own good. And your sycophantic obsession with wanting Routh turned into Reeve gone well beyond the realm of being out of control. Reeve wasn't Reeves. He wasn't Alyn. He wasn't Collyer/Fleischer. He was his own man, as he should have been. Why are you so hell-bent on demanding that Routh be a carbon copy of Reeve and insisting that your vision is an "improvement"? I'm tired of your "improvements that (a) insult the wishes of other artists and (b) are nothing more than the visual whingings of a Reeve fanboy who can't and won't let the man go. Seriously, get over yourself and grow up.

I'm looking at Supersebas' recent manip, the full body shot, and the only changes I see are the widened neck and larger briefs. And while I think the brief change was unnecessary and doesn't do anything, the widened neck enhances the look. No one can complain about him being skinny at all in that pic.
Still, the skinny neck isn't that bothersome. In fact if the teaser is any indication I won't be noticing it in the movie.

What I don't get is why Singer raised the neckline, because Superman #1 and George Reeves neckline was high(retorical question)? The lower neckline looks so much better, anyone can see that!
EDIT: The thing that will be noticeably destinctly different when seen in theaters will be the high neckline!

In stills or movie pics, yes. But he has seen it on film and knows if it works or not, so we'll see. It's almost like Bale's bulky cowl, looked weird and cumbersome in pics, yet on film it's not that bad or blatant.

I think we can all agree Routh would look better if he were bigger and buffer, but then so would most guys. ;) But personally I don't need Superman to be built like a tank. When I watch the original movies, I'm not watching Chris Reeve's muscles or his neck. The fact he's wearing a red and blue costume and has all these amazing powers is what grabs me (and hell, even in the shots where he's skinny and has no chest, he still looked the part).
As for Routh, no matter what kind of build he has, once he takes off into the air with his cape billowing behind him and the theme song blaring, he'll be Superman to me. I mean, if we can buy an out of shape guy like George Reeves as Superman, then surely we can buy Routh.

I'm sorry, but I just think the days of thin tights are over. No matter how much you try to hide it, they still look like ballerina tights. And the big plastic belt just looks ridiculous. That kind of thing was fine in the 70s and 80s, but it wouldn't hold up on the big screen today.
I do like Gerard's \S/ though. It's a big improvent over the wobbly \S/ that Chris had.

These are all the changes I made:
- Made the red a little bit brighter (it's still dark).
- Darkened the blue.
- Lowered the neckline.
- Removed the \S/ on the belt.
- Made the boots slightly taller.
- And removed the dark blue "seams".
That is all I changed. I didn't make the \S/ bigger, or make Routh any bigger, or anything like that.

some posters... kinda copying the spidey 2 titles:

http://img244.imageshack.us/img244/8208/destinyposter7lp.jpg

those look good but the words don't make sense with the images, choice doesn't seem to fit with that, neither does destiny, and sacrifice doesn't either, it looks as he was playing to offer her for some sort of human sacrifice

These brando pics are a little bizarre
no kidding, the suit is gray

If it had a slightly bigger shield, it would be perfect. And I mean that. A better supersuit would be nearly impossible to concoct. These manips sadden me because they show what the suit could have been, easily.
I personally find the pentagonal belt (as opposed to the S-belt) to be much more modern and streamlined than the S-belt they went with. Same goes for a non-leather cape.

I 'd already believed this was the case but just for fun I did a bit of an experiment:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/thesuperbatfan/Superman/Reeves-Manip-comparison.jpg
lowering the trunks on Reeves' suit shows about as clear as you can make it that Singer's biggest influence in deciding the look of Routh's suit was George Reeves. The collar, while tighter up on Routh, is the same, the S is both an updated version of his and is about the same size on the chest as his, hell, even the boots are about the same height on the calf.

Thanks for that. It's what I had always argued way back when the suit was released but no one bought into it. I definitely saw the George Reeves influence with a bit of the Fleischer look to it.

i dont know why they never made the trunks the right size, and i understand it was a long time ago, but what is pleasing to the eyes isn't determined by the year, angelina jolie or anna kournikova would have been hot in 1950 and today, so i dont know why they never made the trunks work for him instead of making him look all awkward

I enoucrage someone to go back and read the pages of this thread before the suit was revealed. I bet half the people now saying a more classic suit would be too bright, too feminine, that the shield would be too big or that the open collar looks stupid, were all praisng manips featuring actors in the classic suit, featuring all those elements that said posters now say are stupid.
Believe me, I've got no problem with people who like the suit. It's understandable. I just think it's ridiculous the way certain people suddenly decided that the classic suit is stupid or unworkable when Routh's costume was revealed.

Wait. You "don't know what the numbers mean?" Out of all the crazy crap involved with comics, the NUMBERS escape you? Do you also no know what the "2" in the movie title "Spider-Man 2" means? It's the same freaking principle.

i havn't read comics but when people say "superman: the man of steel number 142" or something, i am confused, its not even possible that theres only been 142 comics in 60 years or however long its been, and then there is that where they have batman beyond, but they have regular batman comics too, is he an old man and he has a young assistant now, or is he still young, and do people really think bruce wayne is dead because of dark knight or what, like the continuity issue just confuses the hell out of me because i don't know what is what, its very confusing, and they are drawn differently all the time, and they all have different names, Superman, superman man of steel, the superman for all seasons or whatever and everyone says "oh i like how superman was in this comic" isn't he the same in all? its just confusing

I 'd already believed this was the case but just for fun I did a bit of an experiment:
lowering the trunks on Reeves' suit shows about as clear as you can make it that Singer's biggest influence in deciding the look of Routh's suit was George Reeves. The collar, while tighter up on Routh, is the same, the S is both an updated version of his and is about the same size on the chest as his, hell, even the boots are about the same height on the calf.
I found this a while ago, i dont know when its from but damn, look at this for some influences....
http://www.kal-el.org/uploaded_images/gr3big.jpg
neckline, cape length, shield, boots etc... ****, even his torso looks a little long in this drawing like rouths
Yeah, um, not seeing it, especially the boots.
I think there's some real reaching here. Yes there was influence from the ReeveS era, but seriously, it is not like it's the same design, or even close. The only thing similar about the neck line is that it is curved.
Probably a result, in Reeves' time, of lack of great costuming.

well, i say the boots not so much because of the design, but they wrap around his ankles and feet like the new suit. Other than that, i think its a LOT like singers suit, if you put your thumb over reeves face, it reminds me of it a lot. in this pic, reeves is pretty skinny and lanky. I still say the torso is looks low because of the bikini briefs.
but, yeah, i am reaching....the manip of reeves trunks a few posts back just got me to post,

hmm, well the cape is slightly longer, but I agree. GDW, it's not the style of the boots we're talking about, it's about the fact that the boots come to the same height on the calf, and both closely huge the legs instead of the looser look ala Christopher Reeve's boots. It creates, from certain angles, the same look. And yes, it could have just been the costuming of the day, but doesn't change the fact that this costume mimics the collar and neckline of Reeves. And the S is the most obvious:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v144/thesuperbatfan/Superman/S-comparison.jpg
it's harder to see on the promo S but I didn't see a shot of the S from the actual costume that could be easily compared. But the Routh S is a sleeker, 3d version of Reeves S.

I love the boots here - right height, right shape - that's how Routh's should have been.
It's true, Routh's suit isn't a direct copy of Reeve's but it's more like Reeve's than it is like any other Superman suit - illustrated or live-action. One very big similarity is the contranst in lightness between the red and the blue - if you look at Routh's suit in black and white the brightness levels are very similar to Reeves'.

i dont know why they never made the trunks the right size, and i understand it was a long time ago, but what is pleasing to the eyes isn't determined by the year, angelina jolie or anna kournikova would have been hot in 1950 and today, so i dont know why they never made the trunks work for him instead of making him look all awkward
Umm, actually early on in the series they DID give George the small trunks... and it wasn't pretty. I actually think the big trunks looked much better on him, and did a good job hiding his gut. Plus, this was back when guys pulled their pants up really high anyway, so it probably didn't look unusual at all.

I think the flag would work fine if it was faded into the background a little. That way it wouldn't overpower the figure as much.
Maybe it's been done already, but one manip I would like to see is Routh in black and white, the way he would look on the 1950s series. I think a dark and light gray version of the suit would look pretty cool.

well actually the 2 reigning comic book icons of the 20th Century would be Superman and BATMAN, but Spidey is in the top 3, so close enough. But there is a reason that even on SHH, a forum that, judging by the available forums, is mostly Marvel, Batman and Superman still have and have always had forums here since it went from Spidey Hype to SHH.

The cape looks a lot better draped over the shoulders. I think the cape only goes behind his shoulders for flying shots, if it draped forward it might get in the way of the flying harness. Just a guess.

I agree it's not the best cape attachment we've ever seen, but I think we need to wait and see him in action. If the cape was bunched up around the neckline, then it might look more like some kid's blanket tucked into his t-shirt. But as is, it looks fine.
Actually I think the final version of the Dean Cain suit had the best neckline/cape attachment of all of them. The Reeve neckline was way too wide for my taste.
Fatboy Roberts
12-14-2005, 12:20 PM
The reason I don't find it that big a problem in wushuboy's dissection is that the end result is that the old 40's attachment and the new attachment STILL end up making a triangle shape of red at the top of the costume over the..traps? is that right? Are those trapezius muscles right by the neck? anyway, the cape may be attached to the neck differently, but the color and the shape at the top of the costume ends up being pretty similar, just via a different method.

He was very specific and clear about his dislike of the cape attachment and exactly what he doesn't like about it (with illustrations no less). No too hard to grasp. I have many of my own criticisms of the cape and the rest of the "suit", but I've exhausted them by now and many others have listed them ad nauseum. I'll say it again, Routh is o.k. as Supes, but the suit really blows.

Hey that's fine. Like I said I, and some other people, see something at the design and artistic level that you don't or won't acknowledge. Not a big deal to me. So we'll just agree to disagree. Nuff said.

Here's something about the changes they made to the cape attachment for Lois&Clark:
http://www.kryptonknights.com/tnaos/cape.htm
"Getting the cape to fit a modern material that was never meant to support a long heavy accessory and have it look good on a human actor became a never-ending battle..."
Maybe for the same reasons the attachment is the way it is, and the collar is raised higher...

Cool site, thanks for bringing it to our attention. I wouldn't doubt that Routh's cape is attached to him seperately from the costume too.
And no matter what you think about the rest of Dean Cain's suit, he definitely had the coolest looking S on the back.

interesting read .. thanks reveal
Dean Cain's suit in Lois and Clark was so-so. The worst parts were the chest emblem (misshapen and too cartoony) and the shiny leotard. The final cape design was good. The show jumped the shark during the awful "wedding episodes". Overall not too bad for a TV show. For me, Cain was just "o.k.".
The Reeve neckline was way too wide for my taste.
dean cain's suit sucks.
but you know... flies like ****.
