I did laugh at that manip - it IS well done from a technique POV. But it sure does prove one thing: with those eyebrows, nose and chiseled face, Welling doesn't make a good looking woman at all! Thang GAWD! LOL

they chose Tom.

For the record there is nothing wrong with that face.

Many of the minaps here seem to distort Tom's features.

Personally, if the writers of Smallville could sort out the plothole problems without pulling a Bobby (Like in Dallas when the writers covered up a years worth of storyline f@ck ups by having Bobby Ewing walk out of the shower and the writers making the lst season someones dream) i'd say Welling, he's got the look (moreso than any other candidate) and I think his acting has come along enough for him to be able to bring big blue to the screen.

But that is alot of what is making him look like Superman in that picture. In the original photo he looks almost like a bobble head and though his jawline is certianly defined, he doesn't look as strong as the manip makes him look by changing the shape of his head. I'll be the first to admit that he looks fantastic in that picture (even if he can't act worth crap), but it seems a bit off from the way he would really look in the suit to me.

I think I may be able to clear up a few points raised about the manip..

First, the jawline...
As you can see in the face pic there is a very definate dark shadow just below the chin, when taking away the head shot I was left with a thick black line at the base of the head (because of the shadow) due to my crap software.. So, to counteract this I merge a the neck of Reeve with the shadow section of Wellings head, this is what may be distorting the jawline of Welling by making the edge of his jaw less distinctive.. It was a choice between losing a little definition or being left with a thick black line in the manip making it look like i'd just cut and pasted a head on a Chris Reeve pic.

As for the colour match (which JcDc asked about) it was a matter of adjusting colour, brightness, colour, brightness until the colours were matched.. Luckily eventually the colours matched pretty well...

You're both right guys, the hair is a little odd, it's of the original pic of TW going at superspeed so his hairs flying back. I kept it as it was as it did reflect him flying at speed. Here's version 2 after he's had a wash & cut.

JcDc, your absolutely right, a good (or indifferent manip for that matter) dosen't make for a good Superman for the movie, but if done well it does give people an idea of what a certain actor could possibly look like as Superman. The acting etc is another issue.

I use what I can get my hands on. Just did a Google search and a Yahoo image search on "superman" to try and fine some bases to use for the manips. Also, I'm trying not to use the same bases over and over again. The body for the Bailey manip is from that shirt-rip drawing.

If you have enough pictures, including ones from a show with them playing a superhero... It's easy to make some decent manips. If Welling had the handful of pics available, 99% of the good manips wouldn't exist :o

From experience JcDc, it's not really a problem getting pictures of the actors, it's more a problem getting decent qulaity Superman pics in the right pose you want. And by the way it's not that easy making decent manips, try for yourself.

I don't think I'm really keen on them changing the suit either, but I just thought the Daredevil-suit-way would be a cool inspiration if they change the suit. And making it DEEP red (as an homage to Krypton) and perhaps metallic-looking would be awesome. Adding the Ross' symbol was inevitable. ;)

I know it's not easy making decent manips, hell I have adobe photoshop 3.0 so I can't do sh** :( Too find heroic poses suitable for Superman you'd need to have a good amount of pics available of high enough quality. Since Tom Welling is always doing those poses, is on a tv series playing Clark... It makes it easier on manips in comparison. That's my only point. And btw this Law manip is quite good :D

The main problem with Cavill is that basically he looks nothing at all like Superman.. perhaps if I were a supporter of Cavill I would spend more time trying to make him look more super .. But i'm not and I didn't :D

Of course not because it's Chris Reeves's body! It's a manip not the actual thing. You can say that (or rather drone on) about all the manips that have been made on this board. They're all based (on the whole) on Chris Reeves body. They give peope an idea of the look.

PS & by the way the body dosen't look that huge in the pic
