Why hasn't anyone replied to this topic? It thought Birds Of Prey was a popular series.
C'mon someone must have some views on it. I'm curious about the title especially with Gail on writing chores. I've just read the first part of "Hush" and I immediately liked Oracle. Is this book worth looking into?

Oracle kicks ass. Black Canary's almost as snarky and entertaining as Green Arrow. Great combination. Plus, Ed Benes draws some nice-lookin' ladies. :)

Great series, I definitely recommend it.
Gail is doing a good job so far, and that art is great. Nice blend of suspense and humor.
I like the Oracle too, she's a great character... a while ago Wizard ranked her as the best female comic book character.

I always liked the BoP comics, but for a while the storylines were getting really boring. But now with Gail Simone and Ed Benes the storylines and artwork are great. Finally!! Now all DC has to do is apply the same creative to the Robin comics because they have been getting worse and worse since Chuck Dixon left.

Bill Willingham (creator and writer of Fables) is taking over Robin soon. Don't know exactly when.

Great! I have heard alot of good things about the Fables writer (I never read an issue), so maybe the Robin comics will get restored to their former greatness. Let the countdown begin...

I just bought Gail's first 2 issues.
AWESOME stuff!
I really dig the Huntress although her costume sucks ass.
And Benes' artwork is a little too much cheescake. But overall, I think I dig it even more than J Scott Campbell(who I think he emulates a bit here).
Anyways, great book!

I like the Huntress costume, but either way... you have Jim Lee to blame for that.

I know.
It just seemed to be a bit too much. I like Dinah's costume for instance, because it works well with the character, as well as always having fishnets for most of her history.
Huntress got shot by The Joker right in her stomach. So it doesn't make sense to me for her to have her belly showing. As well as the daisy dukes she is wearing. The character has never been like that.
But still, good story, and good art.

Mister J

That's Batwoman (Kathy Kane)in 52 and she does have a different color scheme in her costume. This looked like the Batgirl costume that Barbara wore. It'd suck if it were the same character. Makes me wonder what personal business Babs said she had to attend to that night.

I'm a big Babs as Oracle fan tho'. Shame if she was Batgirl.
It could be it isn't Gail's fault tho' if it were true that Babs is Batgirl.. We all know how comics adjusts to the TV market.
Dan Didio tho' spoke about Cassie recently and told them that they'll be returning her to the warrior who can't speak routine again. I wonder what he meant by that. I agree with him - she's a lot more interesting that way.
I was looking at DC's website, might be that one of the core three (Babs, Huntress, Canary) is leaving 3 issues from now. Wonder if it's because of this?

onceasaint
07-28-2006, 04:56 PM
Yeah, but Ive noticed a lot of artists draw her with a smaller bust as Oracle, shes more plain usually. Theres issues where she's meeting Ted or Dick, or when they elude to anything about her former life as Batgirl, where its like BAM, stacked, but generally not much up top.
Darthphere
07-28-2006, 04:58 PM
I doubt its actually Babs, but she has somehting to do with it. Or maybe the continuity punch really did bring use of her legs back and shes been hiding the fact until she was ready to come back. Either way shes a lot more useful as Oracle than Batgirl.
TheCorpulent1
07-28-2006, 04:59 PM
Returning her to Batgirl status would be a huge regression, as far as I'm concerned. Beyond just being another slap in the face to Cassandra, I mean. Babs is 100 times the character as Oracle that she was as Batgirl.
onceasaint
07-28-2006, 05:17 PM
I like seeing the Calculator as her opposite in the Society. A regression to Batgirl would kind of kill that now that they have some good opposition to her as Oracle.
TheCorpulent1
07-28-2006, 05:19 PM
Exactly. I like that she's a representative of the power of modern technology in the comics, too. Her place isn't out on the field anymore, even if she could walk. She's gone from soldier to general over the years, and I like her a hell of a lot more as the general.

True. True. :batman:
Related mention by Didio in an interview: he says that Batman is less of "World's Greatest Detective" with Oracle around. Might imply something...
Related q: does Talia Al Ghul know Babs = Oracle/Batgirl?
TheCorpulent1
07-28-2006, 05:25 PM
Didio's an idiot. Bruce didn't have to work as hard when Oracle was around, but it was still his mind putting the clues together and coming up with the solutions. He never got any help with that. Anyway, Babs hasn't been Bruce's personal Rolodex since War Games so it's a moot point. There's no reason to regress Babs to Batgirl in order to preserve Bruce's detective status if he and Babs don't even talk anymore.
Also, if Babs is Batgirl again, wouldn't that be kind of an insult? Some newbie shows up and gets to be called the more mature and respectable Batwoman, but Babs, who's pushing 30, has to go back to being Batgirl? I'd be pissed if I were her.
My guess is that Talia knew Babs was Batgirl, but she's not aware of her switch to Oracle. If she were, I imagine she would've told the Calculator. The only Bat-family member she ever cared about is Bruce.

Mister J
07-28-2006, 05:27 PM
If it does turn out to be Babs, I doubt it'd be permanent. Maybe an arc to have her reconcile having her career as Batgirl taken away from her, as opposed to her willingly giving it up. At the end of the day, I'd expect her to realize her greater worth as Oracle. I would enjoy the brief nostalgia though.

Here's a thought: the Society's supposed to be in cahoots with the League of Assassins, right? Cassandra, stupid though it may be, now leads the League of Assassins. Cassandra knows Babs is Oracle. See where I'm going with this? I hope someone figures this out and has Calculator contact Cassandra at some point. If she's gonna be evil anyway, they might as well get at least one good story out of it.

The League of Assassins who are currently Ninja Man-Bats in Morrison's Batman run... -_-;;;
Well, they could know Babs = Oracle - though the only angle you can pull off of Babs is her desire to come back and kick someone's butt. The other angle is blackmail, which I seriously doubt they'll attempt because making a move on Commisioner Gordon will put them smack dab into a war against Batman - something I think the Calculator will dread.

All in all this book OYL hasn't grabbed me like it did before the OYL gap.
Which is more than dissappointing.
The art has been less than impressive and the characterization for Dinah has been less than mind-blowing. Still I know it'll get better.
The first part of this issue was great, it really sort of brought back the 'glory' days of just the three core members but it seems a little juvinile when put into the context that there were three other people there and were in essence pushed to the side. This child, at this point, seems little more than a plot device made to 'grown' Dinah up and I feel no emotional connection to her that I would for Lian. However I do hope Gail uses this to touch on Dinah's 'mom' side since she does have one, especially in connection with the Arrow family.
However the book does seem to be on an upswing since the slow to get off the ground feeling I got from books right after the OYL Gap.
The ending on this one, they don't show the face and the hair when you look at it is tinted red. I'm pretty sure it's Babs, especially after the *hint* she dropped to Dinah about having "personal business'.
Does this mean Babs Batgirl is coming back? Not really no.
I *hope* Simone is smart enough to realize that if she pulled a stunt like that it would regress the character back to the stone age.
Also, ya'll shouldn't be too upset about it.
When is Dinah gonna get her curly hair back? WHY IS ZINDA PRETTIER THAN DINAH!?!
Other than that great book.

TheCorpulent1

I don't know of any memorial-visiting etiquette. I haven't been to many memorials. Maybe it's proper to eat before visiting the memorial, or maybe Sin's becoming a typical brat and wanted to eat first or something.
What's weird about Ted's memorial? It's a big statue of an angel who clearly wishes it were a Greek Nike statue. Nike = Greek symbol of victory. Ted was victorious in the sense that he exposed Max Lord and allowed the heroes to defeat him.

I doubt Manhunter will join permanently. I find her and Huntress have a bit too much in common - well at least, Huntress pre-BOP.
I find the core three and the current fab 5 (+ zinda and gypsy) to be a neat balance. Gypsy hasn't had a chance to shine yet, I find her to have a lot of potential. Much of her character's been defined only by her gimmick and her friendship to the green Martian's JLA crews.

Now things have changed a bit, I just find them a bit chummier I guess. Not as much tension without one of them being in trouble. And it's totally within Dinah's character to get on Babs' case. I like the way Huntress pitched in this time. hehe...

08-01-2006, 09:22 PM
I didn’t mention her earlier? I had fairly scathing remarks about her in my post about the issue but I think I cut them out, fearing your dissaproval.
Anyway, I think it’s a very weak attempt to play up Dinah’s maternal nature, it’s already been shown in the Arsenal mini series and several times in the GA title that she’s a natural mother, taking under her wing all the children and teens Ollie pulls in.
However in both cases, Roy and Mia have grown and Dinah’s sort of reached the ‘empty nest’ stage as far as I’m concerned.
Sin bugs me to death, not just because of the very weak logistics with her *Where does she go when Dinah is on a mission? Babs can’t baby sit her* but because it seems to be a way of ‘forcing’ Dinah to grow up or grow into a maternal role with a child since no one seems interested of marrying her off so she can have her own.
The whole premise of Sin seemed weak. She was a good plot device in the arc, but pulling her out of that arc seemed hasty and not thought out. A Last minute idea of 'oh Dinah can adopt the girl.' without looking at the logistics of it.

Well, given that she still uses words like "she-peeps," I can't say forcing her to grow up a bit would be all bad. :p
Ah, therein lies the other issue I have.
I'm not getting a consistant feel in the way Dinah is portrayed anymore.
By now in the DCU she should be a confident, early thirties woman who's lively, has spunk and is compassionate.
Yet at one point in the bokk she's shown as motherly and grown up and then in another part she seems to be forced into being a youthful teeny-bopper.
Both these things can be combined but it feels like Simone hasn't got her whole mind immersed in the title anymore and so the personas of the characters seem to come out fragmented instead of as a cohesive whole melded together into one thing.
Although I'm not as familier with the character as I am Dinah, even Huntress feels fractured. Her attepmt to smooth things over that the breakfast table felt forced.

I've been getting the same feeling. Dinah felt a lot more consistent pre-OYL. I guess it could be reflective of some unknown changes from the missing year, but it seems more likely that Simone is just forcing her really goofy, wannabe-hip dialogue into the mouths of the characters.
Also, I would've liked to see some kind of more solid resolution for the fact that Babs basically recruited Huntress to manipulate her. Maybe I'm forgetting something from earlier stories, but it seems like she just sort of ended up back with the Birds for no real reason.
See, youre a member of ASSHAT, you can get away with that. :o
A life with ASSHAT is a life of privilege.

At least I'm not the only one...*I should be writing the book* :o ;)
As for Huntress I thought Babs and her kissed and made up?
