View Full Version : Phoenix Eye Effect in X1?

So people have been always saying that Jeans weird reaction to the Mutant Machine exploding is the sign of her turning into Phoenix...however I just watched it last night and I swear that you can see her eyes light up....
Am I imagining things?

I just watched that part, it looks like there could be something, but it might just be a reflection on her eye.

I'm fairly sure it was her reaction that was a foreshadow of the Pheonix, not any special effect.

I heard that there were supposed to be alot of things that happen at Liberty Island for X2 and beyond. The only thing I noticed though was Jean being affected by Magneto's machine. I never noticed the Phoenix effect, I'm going to have to watch that scene again.

the only thing i can think of is Rogue. Maybe theres a good reason for her white streak forming at that particular scene...
Other than that i can't see anything else that they could expand on in future films from that scene...

i didnt noticed her eyes light up, at what part did this happened? all i know is that when the machine was distroyed, and the white beam things was fading out, and when the camera cut to her she was breathing heavily and looking down and i thought she was reacting there. but i didnt noticed her eyes light

AAAARRRRGH!!!!
I've just been having this argument on another board!
I have watched it and re-watched it and i still can't see it. I never saw her eyes light up, nor her giving a "funny reaction" as someone else put it. My theory for what people have seen is the red tinge given to the whole scene by Cyclops' beam. Storm's eyes at that point are also the same colour. i believe that if it was significant it would be a whole lot more obvious, and it wouldn't take multiple viewings to notice it.
I have also always thought that Jean's enhaced telepathy in X2 was caused by her using Cerebro. Cyclops did say it was dangerous, afterall.
As for Rogue's white streak, I figured that was a reaction to her trauma. Nice idea though, to have her hair explained in that way.
But it was Singer who pointed out (after X-men came out) to look at Jean's reaction at the Statue of Liberty. Couple that with Scott's comment "...but at Liberty Island you were..." in X2 and we have the answer to the source of Jean's rapid evolution.

Aaaah... I'll have to watch it *again*. Maybe I get destracted by Magneto...

Rogue's white streaks could have easily been a result of what commonly happens to humans..
Of course everyone knows that hair has a tendency to turn white at high traumatic experiences..

yeah.... jean had a funny reaction to the radiation after wolverine destroyed the machine
Jeanne
10-05-2003, 10:37 AM
*after* he destroyed the machine? I thought it was supposed to be when it was running? How could it happen *afterwards*? I'm not dissing your theory, I just want to hear the explaination. I watched carefully before, during and after it was running, and saw nothing.

There had to be a reason why she didn't want Cyclops to fire, and fearing that he might miss is moot point considering from the second Wolverine dropped down on the torch, the only thing to move was the rings and Logan's arms. It's not as though Cyclops hadn't had a clear shot from the beginning, since Magneto never moved. She was enjoying whatever that machine was doing to her, and when it was over, she realized she had changed. And, in that moment, you can see the thesis of this entire thread. As soon as the white wave fades out and the camera cuts to Jean, watch her reaction then and you can see what everyone is talking about.
Jeanne
10-05-2003, 01:18 PM
What exactly is her reaction like? Does she look alarmed or blissed out?
I still think she didn't want Cyclops to shoot in case he hit Wolverine or Rogue. Even Cyclops didn't shoot the machine, he shot Magneto as a last resort.
These theories are getting weirder and weirder...

That's what she looked like. ;)
Wasn't the original plan/intent of the team as mentioned by Wolverine, "If i don't make it, atleast you can still blast the damn thing." And that's why they allowed Wolverine to go instead of any of the others. Blasting Magneto was via Scott's volition at the last minute and wasn't planned at all.
So when Scott said "I've got a shot, I'm taking him" he meant 'him' as in Magneto but Jean thought he meant Wolverine, as originally planned, which is why she said "Not yet".
What i'm saying is that i don't think Jean stopped Scott because she was enjoying feeding off of the powers of the machine but because she still thought that Logan et al could still be saved.
That said, i'm not disputing that Jean was affected by the machine (as i have always been lobbying for/telling people about that 'Phoenix' moment in X-men 1)

She probably wasn't hesitating because she was feeding off the radiation, but can't a boy who loved his easily aroused, power lusting Dark Phoenix dream?

10-05-2003, 07:13 PM
yeah, actually the orginal point of this thread wasnt about Jeans reaction. In X2 when Jean used her 'Phoenix Powers' her eyes lite up and all that fun stuff...after watching X1 recently I could have sworn I saw something like it in her eye after Cyclops destoryed the machine...
BUT...I looked at it again on the DVD and I cant say I see it again...

so that means the radiation caused her to develop the phoenix stuff?
*scratches head* im confused lol
Spider-Phoenix
10-06-2003, 01:55 PM
yeah, i think its pretty much a fact that it was the radiation. She had the weird reaction afterwards, and then in X2 Cyke mentioned that after the Liberty Island Incident her powers have been flaky...

I STILL CANT SEE ANYTHING!
I never said Scott planned to shoot Magneto, and i thought he said "I've got a shot, I'm taking *it*" I know Wolverine told Scott to blast the machine regardless, but even so, Jean would want to be as careful as possible with Logan and Rogue's lives. I thinks he wanted to wait as long as possible to give Logan time to overpower Magneto and rescue Rogue without the danger of cyclops' beam.
I saw jean's eyes go a little bit red but so did Storm's and that was when Cyclops shot his beam off and red light went everywhere.
I will watch it again though.

It can't get any more specific than this...to see what everyone is referring to, watch the film from exactly 1 hour : 26 minutes : 39 seconds to 1 hour : 26 minutes : 44 seconds (according to the time frame on X-Men 1.5). Within those five seconds, you will see this:
http://www.geocities.com/almighty_pejo/reflection.txt
Notice how the light shining into her eyes brings out the highlights of her hazel eyes. When her eyes move out of the light, they return to normal, as seen here:
http://www.geocities.com/almighty_pejo/no_reflection.txt
I believe this is what Spider-Phoenix was talking about and now, without a doubt of certainty, you are as caught up as everyone else. I hope.

Was it? I haven't seen the film in a long time. :p
But that still doesn't change the fact that Scott didn't mean to shoot either the machine or Wolverine as he obviously thought that blasting Magneto would produce the best results.

actually, "I'm taking him" won't make sense so it would've been "I'm taking him out" if he even said 'him' so just a lapse of judgement on my part.

I've always pegged Jean to swing *that* way, what with her supposed friendship with Ororo and we all know about 'Ro's sexuality. Yukio anyone :p

Jeannie's like me and get's her kicks where she can find them. Underneath that veneer lies a sexual deviant, I just know it! :D
I suppose you can have a cookie...I mean, I have a bunch lying around here, so I don't see how giving you one could hurt. ;) Just don't call me Mistress anymore...it giving me a complex. LOL
And I'm not going to shout "I Am Phoenix!' Remember, Chris isn't writing me at the present. :p;)

Ok, this is an old thread, i know. BUT
Isnt this a better explanation for the phoenix
taking evidence from all 3 movies.
1 ) Jeans powers are weak in Number 1
2 ) Her powers are uber strong in Number 2
3) What could have happened in Number 1 which triggered the power boost in number 2
Hmmmm
Well, although it is mentioned in X-Men 2 that her powers havent been the same since Liberty Island, I think its more likely NOT to be the radiation that caused her power boost.
X3 Explains that she always had those powers, that they were sealed away by prof x, cause he feared what a Kiddy running round with apocalyptic powers would do to somone who didnt hand over pocket money.
Thats why, I have determined that the power boost in X2 came NOT from the radiation, but from CEREBRO!!!
Eg - Professor X put PSYCHIC blocks in her head, to stop her accessing the powers in her subconscious, She puts on Cerebro when the prof is in a coma, and WAAAM BAMMM, She gets a big whammy, her mind not ready for the stress from cerebro, cracks, and the psychic blocks fracture.
While the Writers didnt build on this idea, i think its a better idea than the radiation one. Since X3 sorta blows the whole, "You havent been the same since Liberty Island" thing to dust.
To recap
She had super powers
Prof x Blocked her powers as a child
She was weak and pathetic
Put on Cerebro
Lots of pain, Dizzyness, head ache, and possible Diahorea
Mental blocks fractured
Alkalie Lake - Oh oh, here comes a big big wave
INSTINCT Takes over, which is somthing that tends to develop along side Evolutionary traits. And she holds the water back. (Instincts guide us in how to use our new found abilities)
Boom- Shes submerged in water, for gawd knows how long, its unclear if she swam to the surface to get dinner or what, or if she just ate raw fish from the Lake, but she went in with short hair, and came out with a good 3 months growth.
Alas, she dies in x3, after tearing Alcatraz Island to pieces.
Have a look at my music video for clips from x-2 and x-3
Look for videos on Youtube by Baaleos.

ever since liberty island you've been different
could also be a reference to her using cerebro
it was in the same time as liberty island
so it wasnt nessesarily about the machine
i think the mental blocks were beginning to break since x1
from using cerebro etc.
and they keep breaking so in x2 she is more powerful
and the end of x2 they break away completely
and in x3 she is without the blocks
Baaleos
11-30-2006, 05:51 PM
Yeah, i mean, it makes sense that maybe Cerebro was what caused the breakdown in first place. It makes more sense that than the whole "Hmmm, yummy radiation"
The blocks were there to stop her accessing the full potential of her powers, they got "cracked" when she used cerebro, in x2, she was starting to experience moments when the powers would be accessible, but maybe with the powers came a glimpse of what was to come "phoenix" re-awakening. "I got this feeling somthing bads about to happen" she says this at the museum. (maybe she was dreaming about phoenix?)
So, X2, powers coming back, but the personality hasnt changed, YET.
Another explanation of this could be that phoenix wasnt ready to assert control of her, and it only let Jean use its powers in X2 when she needed to. To protect her, and itself.
Jet - She detonates 1 rocket, possibly saving her life and everyone elses. (she didnt get the other one though)
Dam- Cyclops optic blast, She couldnt hold his blast forever, so Phoenix lent its power to her so it could protect her.
The water is coming, and Jean has control of her actions, she tries to stop the water, so Phoenix, whos personality wouldnt wana do this, gets dragged out of the jet too, it gives her the power she needs to lift the jet, hold back the water, and to protect herself from harm. (telekinetic shield)
I know phoenix isnt a cosmic entity as it was in the comics, or cartoon, but its conceivable, that in the moie X2, that the manifestations of phoenix power, were merely so it could protect its host/JEAN, so it could survive.
Cosmic Mind
