Since a few kind souls have asked to see some pics of my collection of Lizard crapola, I have complied.

These are just a few quick still pics taken with a digital camcorder, so they're nothing spectacular, but they should give a basic idea as to the extent of my Lizard-mania.

EDIT- Nov 2005 You can see higher-quality updated pics here:

On top of a comic box containing all the Lizard's comic appearances (and I do mean ALL of them-- from ASM #6- November 1963 to current, including flashback and cameo appearances!), we have some boardgames, Mego figures, the Art Asylum bust, and in front of the bust's box, a Toy Biz prototype figure.

http://www.picturedot.com/FetchImageJPG.asp?ImageType=P&ImageFormat=H&ImageID=72013
Bottom two shelves with books, novels, trading cards and videos on the bottom, and various stuff on the second shelf including art kits, metal figures, cups, and target sets.

Top shelf with figures including model kits, Toy Biz, Mego, and various foreign bootleg figures.

Any questions? (And I mean besides "Did you know that you're a total dork?")

Well, if you include cameo appearances, flashbacks, and crazy stuff like Sergio Aragones Massacres Marvel, there are well over a hundred Lizard appearances-- probably around 150. I've got a list of all the specific comic appearances, of course, but not with me at the moment.

I actually have three Mego Lizards. The one in the box (pic #4) is the 1974 "type-one body" version, with solid, non-moveable wrists. I got it in a trade a long time ago. I traded a Remco Creature From the Black Lagoon doll for it. The box is about a C-8 condition, and the figure is C-9, with only minor fading on the tail.

The Mego in the blister-pack (pic#3) is the type-two body from the late '70's with poseable wrists. The figure is perfect mint C-10, even though I got it loose for only $50 in the early days of ebay. The blister card is a repro.

The loose figure in pic #4 standing next to the boxed figure is the Palitoy/Mego "Fist Fighter" Lizard that was only sold in the UK. Note the small black lever on its lower back. When the lever is moved sideways, the figure makes a punching motion. The condition is C-9. I found this figure in 1997 at Sci-Fi World in Orlando FL, and traded a bunch of loose Star Wars Figures for it. I'm still trying to find the British backing card (or a repro), and a mint-on-card version sells for about $500.00 these days.

The short version of this story starts with the fact that I loved dinosaurs starting at age four. Anything remotely like dinosaurs (like Godzilla) or monster reptiles I loved, too. I picked up my first Spidey comic (Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #34) at age eight because Lizzy was on the cover. I loved the character, and he's still my favorite today.

Toy Biz prototype on left (unpainted, all hard plastic-no PVC, and no "tail-lashing" mechanism), center- Italian bootleg of "Swamp Roller" Lizard with different paintjob and fewer points of articulation, right- Mexican bootleg based on mold of "Transforming" Lizard- but it doesn't transform, and is almost solid PVC with 4 big points of articulation and a paint job so crappy, it's funny.

Large-size Lizard figures from ToyBiz in rear, "garage" kits of Lizard in front (one is unfinished, obviously).

Juggernaut is one of my first comic villian favs, I remeber watching "Spider-man and his Amazing friends" the episode with Juggy in it and just remember saying Wow! But I never thought of collecting him eclusively, wish I would have. I have his first appearence Uncanny #12, but what you've done is amazing.

I was just revisiting this thread and I realized that I never gave a more exact answer to this question.

Lizard's total ORIGINAL (not reprints) appearances in the comic books, including cameo appearances, flashbacks, pin-up pages, original cover art, gag comics (like Not Brand Echh and Fred Hembeck Destroys the Marvel Universe), and the appearances of "The Lizard II", or "Lizard Clone" from the 1994-1996 Spidey comics: 151 total.

I got a VG copy of Amazing Spider-Man # 6 for $18.00 way back in 1987 at a little comic shop in Bradenton, Florida. I remember being worried about my parents finding out that I spent that much on a comic book, so I never told them how much it cost. :D

As far as video games, I have the Sega Genesis game from 1993 with Lizzy (Sega also made a Spidey coin-op arcade game in 1991 with Lizzy in it, but I don't have that -- yet ;)).

I also have the Nintendo 64 version of the Spider-Man game from 2000 that featured Lizzy. I keep meaning to get the PS version of that game too, since it's at KB Toys for like $9 now.

I don't have any of the handheld Spidey games for the Gameboy yet, and I hear that Lizzy was in a couple of those.

I'll also have to get the Spider-Man 2 game when it comes out, since Lizard will be in that one too.

Well, I do actually have the domain name "the-lizard.com" registered. ("thelizard.com" was already taken by a stupid graphic design firm, and "lizard.com" is some music collector).

My original intent was to put up a site full of Lizard info and pics when it was officially announced that Lizzy would be in Spider-Man 2. Obviously that didn't happen, so I didn't really feel like spending the $$ to set up a site.

Now that site hosting is cheaper however, maybe I will do it at some point.

Sure, you could include more and greater detailed pics of your collection, reviews and commentary on all his appearances, etc....and anyway, Doc Conners is gonna be in the sequel...that's something. And honestly, with Conners secured, you KNOW the Lizard will show up no later than the fourth Spidey flick....i'd almost bet money on it.

its fine for the cgi series... but if they do that to him in a movie ill shoot my self... i want more of a basic reptile... also theres a basic looking lizard that if its being attacked it can have its tail pulled off and it will grow back... i think connors should be researching that lizard in the movie verse... not just ne lizard... and i could be wrong but i dont think iguanas lose there tails and grow them back...

The Lizard
01-09-2004, 11:44 AM
Well, Iguanas can grow back their tails, but only for one time, if I recall. The tail that grows back is shorter and darker than the original tail.

I really like the MTV Spidey Lizard design, but I'll agree he's too animalistic for a future SM movie, IMO. The horned ridges and fins on the back are a little too much for a creature that started out as a human being. A movie Lizard should look more like the comic version (only not necessarily green, and without those purple pants).

Oh-- here's another pic I uploaded to crappy Picturedot a while ago, but never posted:

http://www.picturedot.com/FetchImageJPG.asp?ImageType=P&ImageFormat=H&ImageID=72846

Across the botton of the pic is a fold-up comic strip featuring Spidey vs Lizard from a 1978 Spidey Pez dispenser. Art is by Mike Zeck.

Above the strip are a few small items, which are (clockwise from left): Toy Biz pog, French cookie pog, 1990 address book, UK plaster Lizard statue from art set, UK micro-set figure, enamel stick pins, Toy Biz micro-set figure, and a tiny ceramic Lizard figurine made in France and given away with cake on religious holidays.

yes.. ill have to look up this lizard i saw though ... it can grow its tail back several times and it practically almost can fall off on its own...

You should have some or all of the original art professionally framed. I've got about 30 pages of Spidey art framed, and it makes for a nice gallery. I have the pages in a black matte inside a black metal frame. The black matte and frame work to pull your eyes to the center and focus on the art. I've seen pages framed with white mattes which to me do not hold the image well. Your eyes are not held to the art as with a black matte and frame.

Also, make sure that the glass used has UV protection.

When I go to the Orlando MegaCon I'll ask Jim Mooney if he's got any Lizard pages left for you. Every year he says he's about out of Spidey art, but then shows up with a bunch of Spec S-M pages.

That would be much appreciated. I have one Mooney art page from PPTSSM #33, but it just has Spidey, Iguana and Dr. Connors -- no Lizard.

I've emailed Jim Mooney a couple timesin the past, but he always says he doen't have any Lizard pages left, and offers to draw me a Lizard sketch for $100.00. I appreciate the sketch offer, but Mooney's original pages from PPTSSM usually sell for less than that, and a Lizard page from PPTSSM # 34 is what I REALLY want.

About 4 months ago, I missed out on an ebay auction for a page from PPTSSM #61 that had Lizzy featured in a flashback panel. I really kicked myself over that one, and tried to offer a trade to the winning bidder, but he wasn't interested.
A note to ebay sellers who list original comic art: list ALL the characters who appear on the page by name! There's so much Spider-Man crap on ebay, that I only do a search for "spider-man +lizard". Arg -- I'm still mad about missing that auction.

Anyway, if Jim ever digs up more PPTSSM Lizard pages, I'll be there front and center to buy! Thanks for any help, thugie.

I'll let you know if anything turns up. Like I've told you before, the only "Lizard" art I have is a blue line rough on vellum. It's VERY loose artwork and was given to me by Mr. Mooney back in the early 1980s. I've got it filed away, but I think it was from that Iguana story in PPSM.

If you go to the comicart board on Yahoo and ask around I'm almost certain you can locate the pages you want:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/comicart-l/

Mike Burkey owns about 60-70% of ASM original art up to issue 289, and probably has several PPSM pages as well. Getting him to part with any of them is difficult.

There were a bunch of ASM Lizard pages from ASM 166 for sale that were on a comic art site. Unfortunately, they're all sold.

Post on the Yahoo site that you're looking for Lizard pages and your sure to hear from someone.

And here's something that you will never see again; the original art by Ditko from ASM #6 page 8 which features the VERY first meeting between Spidey and the Lizard. With 15 days to go in the auction it's already close to $9,000. This same page was sold at the San Diego con last year for around $15,000. Wouldn't it be nice to own that piece.

Most of the pages from that issue were damaged or destroyed because, as legend has it, years ago the entire issue was shipped to someone and left where his dog could get to it. The dog proceeded to tear the issue to shreds. True story. Many of the pages have been repaired.

Here's the link if you want to view this very rare original piece:

http://apps.heritagecomics.com/common/view_item.php?source=&Sale_No=809&Lot_No=4222&sid=CD6DDDDBF061AE26C1E05911D6891149

Also, it's the earliest original ASM original art piece that is publically known. Earlier art is said to exist, but was stolen from Marvel's files so it remains in secret private hands.

Thanks for that link --- that's AWESOME!

This is only the fourth art page from ASM # 6 that I've seen for sale since about 1999! Since it shows the FIRST encounter between Spidey and Lizzy, it's even better! I've saved pics of those other ASM # 6 pages, and I'll save this one, too! (since it will sell for WAY out of my price range!):D

The other pages from ASM #6 that I've seen online are:

The page where Spidey is in the lab working on the antidote, and Lizzy bursts in and attacks him

The page where Lizzy commands his alligators to attack Spidey in the swamp

The page right after the page listed above, where Spidey climbs up the wall of the Spanish fort and Lizzy chases after him

I knew about the "dog chewing" story concerning these art pages, but I didn't know that ASM #6 art is the oldest Spidey art that is accounted for. Too bad -- unless someone turns up some art from ASM # 1-5, I'll NEVER be able to afford #6 art. ;)

thugie
01-23-2004, 05:48 PM
It has been confirmed on the ComicartL board that ASM 1-5 art does exist as some have seen the art. Complete issues of art are out there and viewed in secrecy since they are in fact stolen from Marvel's archives. Not that Marvel would have still had them anyway since they threw out a lot of art. Just recently it was reported on the ComicartL site that the family of a deceased Marvel artisit asked Marvel to return any of his art that they might still be holding to the family. Some of it did turn up later when a vagrant found complete issues original art in a dumpster outside the Marvel office. Makes you wonder what has been tossed out all these years.

But now I need them all on DVD.

Why does that not surprise me? :D

I'm waiting on a rare VHS to be shipped from Canada with the '81 solo Gobby episode and 2 '60s ones on it. Then I'm going to get someone to burn them on a disc for me. Will probably do the same with the ORIGINAL original Star Wars trilogy. ;)

Good idea.

There were a bunch of VHS tapes of Spidey episodes made in Canada that weren't made in the US, weren't there?
My tapes of the "Stone Tablet" and "Secret Wars" episodes are Canadian.

Thank goodness for ebay.

True.

I'm thinking of getting two Ultimate Lizard figures, so I can customize one.
The articulation looks great on that figure, so it might be worth the effort of triming the fins, repainting the skin, and digging up an extra labcoat. :)

I'm pretty sure that those are all the Spidey novels so far released in the USA that included the Lizard.

In addition to all those, I also have a British-printed paperback book that retells the story from the "Night of the Lizard" animated episode from 1994 in short-novel format.

There are also several kid's books from the mid-'90s featuring Lizzy, including a pop-up book, an electronic sound storybook, and a Spider-Man "meet the characters" book. As far as kid's coloring books with Lizzy, I've only found one so far, again from the 1990's animated show.

Then, of course there's the recently-published children's board-book of Spidey and Friends -"The Lizard Exhibit", with anime-style art for the little kiddies. :)

Thanks! I'll have to take a look at that Wizard sketch of a new Lizard bust because I haven't seen it yet. I will buy, it though - I can tell you that. :)

And yes, I have all the Lizard's appearances in Spidey Super Stories - there are four of them, if I remember. Interesting fact: sometimes the artist doing Super Stories would draw Curt Connors so that his right side was always facing away, so it wasn't obvious he was missing an arm. Later on, they just drew him with both arms, since they apparently thought the concept of an amputated arm would be too upseting for little kids!

No -- nothing can touch the Universal Studios Spidey ride in Orlando.

This "Ultimate" ride looks like fun, but as it states on that site, its a more limited-budget ride. I'd still like to see it, but I don't think I'll be traveling through the Niagra Falls area anytime soon..

This is a scene from "Spider-Man: On Stage" - a Spidey musical performed in 1999 as part of the entertainment at the Butlins Family Resort chain of British vacation resorts.

Has anyone seen the new Ultimate Lizard figure in person yet?

The reason I ask is because I've seen two different versions of the toy, and I'm wondering which one is the final retail version.

This is the Ultimate Lizard pic that appears on the back of the Spidey figure packages and was posted months ago on several toy sites:

It looks like a totally new sculpt that's pretty well articulated, right?

I wish some Mego fanatic would make a repro FF Lizard card backing - I'd buy that in a second.

The reason I ask is because I've seen two different versions of the toy, and I'm wondering which one is the final retail version.

This is the Ultimate Lizard pic that appears on the back of the Spidey figure packages and was posted months ago on several toy sites:
http://www.marvel.com/toybiz/spiderman/previews/72079.jpg
It looks like a totally new sculpt that's pretty well articulated, right?

BUT- look at this 2004 Toy Fair pic posted on Toymania.com
http://img42.photobucket.com/albums/v130/TheLizard/SMC10-Lizard3.jpg
This version looks like ToyBiz just used the MTV animated Lizard body and stuck a new head on it! Note the lack of joints in the hands and legs.

So--- which toy is the one hitting the stores right now?

When a toy isn't fully finished, but definitely in the works when a Toy Fair rolls about, sometimes a toy company will make a mock-up of the figure using a similar body. Toy Biz has done this plenty of times with figures such as Scorpion, Human Torch, Iceman, Black Widow, Phoenix, and some others I can't quite recall at the moment.

Didn't you recently say that you had seen a Lizard from the "Spider-Man and Friends" figure series for children? I've seen Rhino, but as of yet no Lizard...

I know I still play with action figures but anyways I am thinking of buying two so that I can tidy up the other one to look more original to the comics insted of U version. But I have a question??? Does anyone know if this Lizard has a poseable tail like to bend at will with you fingers? Cause i want a lizard with a long posable tail and have not found ONE! DAMMIT

I finally got one at Target yesterday (for $4.88 sale price!), but I had to work for it...
I got sick of seeing nothing but Spideys on the hooks, so I took one of the Spidey figures that was part of the new series that includes Ultimate Lizard, and scanned it under one of those price scanners that are in the aisles at Target. It showed the price, but it also said "In backstock: YES". So I asked a sales clerk if there were indeed more in the back, and he went and got a Lizard for me. The card was beat up, but I didn't care!

So, to answer your tail question-- Ultimate Lizard does NOT have a bendy tail. It's solid plastic, and is only poseable at the base of the tail. (The MTV animated Lizard still has the most poseable tail with 3 joints). There's also a stupid "Tail Attack action feature" where you push this big button on Ult.Lizzy's side and the tail twists to the side -lame. Overall Ultimate Lizard has about 32 points of articulation- not too shabby. The figure comes with a break-apart lab table that actually looks pretty cool.

I'm going to buy another one and customize it to look more like "classic" Lizard as well. The first thing that's getting cut away is that tail-attack button!

That is one great collection! I had no idea so much stuff existed just for the Lizard. And just imagine how much more there'd be if he's in the third movie! *crosses fingers* This is a good example of why, instead of collecting every Spider-Man item I see, I only get items that have to do with my two favorite villains.

By the way, I have a question, and I figure you'd be the person who could answer it. I recently saw for sale a figure called the Man-Lizard, which is like some hideous fusion of man, lizard, and spider. Is this just some figure the toy company came up with for the hell of it (which wouldn't surprise me) or is it actually based off a comic? And if so, which comic?

Man-Lizard was indeed made up by Toy Biz, and has never appeared in comics. That figure was part of the "Archnophobia" toy series, where two Spidey characters were combined to make a "what if" type villain.
I guess Man-Lizard was supposed to be a cross between Lizard and Man-Spider, but the only remotely Lizardlike thing about the dumb toy was its green color and its tail (which had a spider-head on the end of it!).

I own the figure, but only because the word "Lizard" appears on the box. :p

Here's a great Ditko image advertising the Mego. A friend of mine also has the original display box for the Lizard/Spidey/Goblin assortment but I don't have a photo.

Yeah, I love that old ad. That Ditko Lizard is from an original pin-up page in ASM Annual #1 if I remember correctly.

I've got all three variations of the Mego Lizard- type 1, type 2, and Fist Fighter. However, I only have the original box for the type 1. My type 2 is in one of those sliding repro cards and my Fist Fighter is loose. I wish someone would make a repro card for the UK fist fighter Lizard.

I think you're right about that being from the ASM Annual, I used to have it. I just recently had some help in identifying where the Lizard from the back of the Mego box comes from, that was driving me nuts.

I made a reproduction card for the UK Fist fighting Captain America last year but I don't own an original Liz card so it would be hard to duplicate that art. Lizard is the only character whose artwork varies from front to back too.

Have you ever seen that old Spider-Man arcade game that had the Lizard in it? I believe it was called Spider-Man the Arcade Game and I think you could play as Spidey, Hawkeye, Black Cat, and oddly Namor. It never came out for any home system as far as I know but it had a cool scene where you ran across Curt Connors on a bridge and you said something like "It's Curt Connors!" and then he transformed into the Lizard and you said "No! The Lizard!" and had to fight him. I remember playing it 10-15 years ago.

I've got some variations, prototypes, customs, and some foreign bootleg knockoffs, but if you're just counting legitimate licensed action figures, let's see...

Mego produced the one Lizard doll during the mid-to-late 1970s.

During the 1980's...nothing (not even a Mattel Secret Wars figure)!

Toy Biz made about seven different Lizard figures during the 1990s (all based on the '90s animated series version except for one McFarlane-style Lizard).

So far we've seen three new Toy Biz Lizards released since 2000 (one from the MTV animated series, one from the Ultimate comic series and the "Spidey & Friends" version Lizard), with the upcoming Marvel Legends version being the fourth.

YES! That is indeed the newspaper strip storyline from Nov 2002 - Feb 2003 that I've been trying to find!

Dude I got the old first appearence of the lizard from the sixties or whatever

I assume you mean Amazing Spider-Man # 6 from November 1963 - great issue!

I remember when I bought my first copy of ASM # 6 at a little comic book shop in Bradenton Florida back in the day. The price was $18.00 for the G/VG condition comic. In that condition, I could probably get about $300-$400 for it on Ebay today.
However, I also notice that there always seems to be several copies of ASM # 6 available on Ebay at any given time, so it's really not a hard-to-find issue as far as early Spidey comics go.

I have a UK reprint version of ASM # 6 with different cover art. You can see it here, along with a few other ASM #6 reprints: http://www.superherohype.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2161602&postcount=101.

The original 1960's UK printing of ASM #6 looked just like the US version except it had a price of "9d" instead of 12 cents.

Heres Randy Bowen on the Lizard mini bust from statuesforum.com

Also: Ignore the center shot of Lizard (in the snea peeks). His head wasn't glued on, so it's in a goofy position in that shot. The piece was sculpted by Sam Greenwell and me. I did the head and arms, Sam did the rest.

Sam had originally sculpted this peice years ago, but I decided to revise it after seeing the realistic Komodo Dragon version that was release by Diamond(?)

Pretty impressive stuff you've got there! Welcome to the HYPE!

I'm personally not a huge stickler when it comes to the condition of packaging and comics. My ASM #6 is probably only around a 6.5 at best, but it still has special meaning for me, since I found it at a little comic shop for only $18 when I was in high school.

I've got a near-mint loose Palitoy fist-fighter Lizard and I'd love to find a backing card. However, the people I know who make repro Mego cards haven't made one yet for that figure, but maybe someday.

Hey Lizard, I understand where you are coming from when you refer to packaging. However, I was never a collector who could live with anything repro or in it's original packaging. I was never a "loose" collector. It is understandable why someone would decide not to bother collecting packaged mego lizards' since they are not only extremely rare, but also very very pricey! The only reason I have what I have is from being single till the age of 26 before getting married and starting a family.

Don't get me wrong- I do love the packaging of those old items, and I do have the Mego card and box for my type 1 and type 2 Lizards. But I also like to display all the Lizard toys together, and since I've had most of them since I was young they are loose.
That being said, if I happened to stumble across the standard Mego Lizard in the Palitoy packaging -- I would keep that guy mint on card for sure! :D

Speaking of expensive collectibles, the original Ditko art for the last page of ASM #6 is on Ebay right now! http://cgi.ebay.com/Spiderman-6-page-21-original-art-Ditko_W0QQitemZ6572707442QQcategoryZ972QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem

No Lizard on that page of course, but I'll bet the price is going to go way up just the same. So far I've seen auctions for six original Ditko art pages from ASM #6, but the most I was able to get out of it was copies of the scans. ;)

Hey Lizard, I noticed you have a repro card for your mego Lizard. There are actually 6 different packaging variations of the mego Lizard...

1.) misprint box the "e" in the word "the" is in the "L" in Lizard(type 1 fig was released in this box)
2.) regular print with circle(1st) mego logo (all boxes around $200-450)
3.) second mego logo(MC) box
4.) standard regular card...check out mego museum...the Lizard was NEVER produced on a Kresege card despite bad rumors(a MOMC sells for 10K or more)
5.) palitoy fist fighting lizard(sells for between $600(poor)-$4,500 MOMC)
6.) palitoy regular carded lizard(1 known to exist) (never sold)$$$$$$$
Also, I was just saying that I am not a fan of anything repro. I would rather just have a loose figure or not have it at all. I really admire your animated series prototype...wish I had that, lol. I hope this list serves you well...

That's a great list for all the Mego Lizard card types! That goes beyond MegoMuseum's info, so I was not aware of those box variations.

My personal goals with relation to the Mego packaging is to get one representation of each different graphic of the Lizard himself, so a standard regular card and the Fist Fighter card would make me happy.
Let me know if you stumble across any loose cards in your Mego travels. ;)

I saw your post on spidermancollector.com about the Tara Spidey playset. Had any luck with that one yet?

LovetheLizard

Hey Lizard, I have not had any luck yet on that. It is my own fault that I do not own that because I was the high bidder with about an hour left in the auction the last time it was on ebay and I forgot about it...go figure! The mego variations I learned from the foremost knowledgable mego dealer/collector on the planet...His name (Mark H.)is featured on every story on the 6 part story line "the mego story" in Tomarts. The only reason I own the carded FF Lizard that I do is because he sold me his from his personal collection. It would be next to impossible to get a loose original regular card or palitoy FF card. If you are ok with just having the pic from each card I suggest ebay. I have seen nice repros of the regular card on ebay. By the way, why don't you drop me a line on Sy's site? I wouldn't mind chatting with you over the phone sometime. I will tell you everything about the mego lizards'. I think we have exchaged emails in the past...if you live in Atlanta then I think we have. I live in PA. It is a very big accomplishment to have the different mego variations of lizzy. By the way, I have spoken to the person who listed his variations on mego museum. Not every variation is shown there. Try to go on Megocentral galleries and there you will see a beauty of a regular card owned by Mark H. and the FF Lizard and type 1 in the correct box. I hope to talk to you sometime. I think we can both teach each other interesting facts about Lizard collectibles. I have always wanted to discuss the Lizard with another lizard collector.

It's no substitute for the real thing I know, but just for fun here's the Tara playset Lizard and the Ideal playset Lizard (larger than life of course!):

Hey Lizard, you are referring to the Marvel World by Amsco...I could have bought that twice, but don't feel like spending between $250-500 for a sealed box when all I want is the Lizard cardboard figure. I do have 2 examples of the 1973 Spiderman Ideal vinyl playset. One is in my personal collection and the other for sale. I have the Lizard cardboard fig on my "Lizard" desk. The thing I love the most is that I was lucky enough to have a green base. It looks so sharp. My cardboard lizzy looks brand spankin' new. I also forgot to tell you I own the prototype for the spiderman and friends color change lizard. It does bother me that I do not have the tara.amsco cardboard lizard, but that is what keeps us collectors' interested in the hobby and they way I look at it, if I can get a carded mego lizard and a carded FF lizard then anything is possible. Like a wise comic book dealer once told me "all you need are two things...Money and Patience"...I suggest we all need to take the money part with a grain of salt. However, it is true.

The Lizard
10-28-2005, 09:05 AM
That's right - Marvel World was made by Amsco, wasn't it? Same Lizard as the Tara set though. I remember when I was a kid, my next-door neighbor had the Marvel World set, and I really coveted his Lizard figurine. Since I couldn't find a set of my own or get him to trade the Lizard, I just drew one on card-stock and made it for myself! Fortunately, the helpful periodical Toy Shop (remember that?) helped me find a Tara set later on. ;)

I also forgot to tell you I own the prototype for the spiderman and friends color change lizard.

That's awesome. Where did you find it? Was it just a matter of stumbling across it, or are there specific dealers who specialize in Toy Biz protos?

I've had a difficult time finding Lizard prototypes, so the 1994 Spidey Animated Lizard is the only one I have so far. I had a chance to get a proto of the 1996 MacFarlane-style Toy Biz Lizard when I was at San Diego Comic Con in 2000, but the price of $350 seemed kind of steep at the time.

Anyway if you don't still have my email address, PM me and I'll send it to you.

LovetheLizard
10-30-2005, 09:43 PM
Hey Lizard, I know someone who has a friend who works in that specific department within Toybiz. That is how I have the protos that I do. Yes Amsco was the company who manufactured Marvel World. I will contact you by way of email as soon as I have some time to retrieve my password on Sy's site. By the way, how did you get that card for your mego lizard...off ebay? I do not like to use the word repro much because the word "repro" means an exact copy of the original. That said very few people have an exact "repro" card because someone has to scan one which I suppose is hard to do. The repro thing never tickled my fancy, as a collector I think it actually defeats the purpose of being a true collector. By the way, even Sy's carded Lizard is not an exact copy of the original card. If you look at the carded Lizard he owns I will explain why it is not an original card stock. By the way did you ever get the diamond exclusive spidey vs. lizard?

The Lizard
11-01-2005, 01:26 PM
I'm still working on that Diamond Spidey vs Lizard statue. It was only just officially released last week, so I was holding back until I had a better price range to choose from on Ebay. I'm looking to pay around $25-$30.

My most recent purchase was a Nintendo Classics Spider-Man LCD keychain game from the UK featuring Spidey vs Lizard.

Yes, my pseudo-Kresege Lizard card came from Ebay as well. Not a real duplicate of the actual Mego card I realize, but useful for holding my loose Lizzy. :)

Review of the Toy Biz "Fearsome Foes" 2005 Lizard figure

It's been over thirty years since the first Lizard action figure was produced by Mego, but after all that time we've finally got a Lizard figure that gets just about EVERYTHING right!

Earlier this year, we saw the preproduction version of the first Marvel Legends Lizard at the 2005 Toy Fair, along with the rest of the "Fearsome Foes" Spider-Man set:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/TheLizard/ffoeslizard_figure.jpg

The good news is that hardly anything has been changed from that great-looking preproduction design...
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/2078/ffliz4wa.jpg
The final version Lizard's labcoat is one solid piece of rubbery vinyl, so it has no split in the middle of the jacket like the preproduction version and that's a good thing. The bad news is that Toy Biz didn't use the cool 3-D molded bases seen at the Toy Fair, so instead the Fearsome Foes bases are just flat with a sticker picture of the villain on them. Since the sticker can easily get dented or worn away by attaching and removing the figure from the base, I don't think these bases are going to get much use by collectors.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/TheLizard/ffoeslizard3.jpg
The paint job is also very good, with the purple pants darkened to a point that they don't look weird, and the appropriate amount of "stains" on the lab coat. The dark green scales are the perfect color, although the green area around the neck and chest is a bit too bright compared to the rest of the body (I darkened these areas myself, as detailed later).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/TheLizard/ffoeslizard1.jpg
The Lizard stands somewhat taller than the average Marvel Legends Spidey figure, so his height is just about right. This figure doesn't really seem based on any particular artist's depiction of Lizzy, but is a good combination of different versions. The elongated fingers recall the McFarlane Lizard, while the lean, wiry body shape resembles Romita's version. The head seems to be somewhat based on the Art Asylum Lizard mini-bust, but slightly less dinosaurian and more lizardlike, with teeth that look sharp, but not overly long.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/TheLizard/ffoeslizard2a.jpg
The only fault I find with the head is that it's slightly small when held next to the other Marvel Legends figures. Since the Lizard has a human-sized brain, his skull and snout should be somewhat oversized when compared to a human's head. However this a very minor nitpick and does not detract from the excellent sculpt of the head and moveable jaw.

The overall poseability of the figure is awesome, as would be expected from the Marvel Legends line. The tail is bendy rubber attached to a plastic base. There are about 35 points of articulation on this figure, which falls short of some of the crazy 46-point Spidey figures, but it's plenty for the Lizard to get into some super-cool poses.
I only have two complaints about the articulation: First, the Lizard doesn't have a mid-torso hinge, so he can't bend forward at the stomach like so many of the other ML figures. I assume the reason for this was because the rubber labcoat "vest" had to be glued to the torso, but it still looks to me like there was enough room for a stomach-hinge to be there. Second, the bendy tail is attached to a plastic base which has a not-very-moveable peg joint attaching it to his butt. The plastic base of the tail should have been a ball-joint like the shoulders and hips. As it is, the Lizard's tail can be bent, but it always sticks straight out of his rear and can't rest on the ground or curve around his body. To be fair, lizard tails in real life aren't very bendable either, with the exception of a chameleon.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/TheLizard/ffoeslizard4.jpg
So to sum up...

PROS: great sculpt, poseablity, and paint job; looks lizardlike and not too dinosaurian

CONS: joint at base of tail not poseable enough, sticker base instead of molded base

When all is said and done however, this is an AWESOME figure! By far the best Lizard figure ever made to date. I don't know if Toy Biz has any plans to release this Lizard as an individual figure someday, but they really should so that kids who maybe can't afford the big "Foes" set might have a chance to have the real classic Lizard to play with.

For those who are OK with painting or "touching up" their figures for display purposes, I would recommend the following:

1. The green on the figure's neck and chest is too bright next to the head color. Dry-brush some darker green acrylic paint over these areas with a small brush, then dry-brush another thin layer of black paint until the neck and chest match the head.

2. The tongue on my Lizard was painted one flat greyish-purple color, but I noticed some of the other FFoes Lizards had a "line" down the tongue. I added some darker purple-grey paint to the center of the tongue, and dry-brushed some black in the back of the open mouth to make it look more like a dark throat. I also highlighted the yellowish teeth with some antique white acrylic so the teeth would look brighter than the claws. I then brushed the teeth and tongue with clear gloss acrylic to create a wet saliva look. Dont close the mouth until the clear acrylic is totally dry!

3. As with many Marvel Legends figures, the peg-joints don't always match the surrounding area very well. I dry-brushed some black smears over the exposed bright-colored pegs in Lizzy's jaw, hands, feet, and knees until they were the same dark color as the skin and pants. Brush some clear flat acrylic on the pegs when finished so that the paint won't get rubbed off by handling or posing the figure.

4. On my figure, the plastic base of the tail was darker that the rubber part of the tail, so I lightly dry-brushed black once again over the rubber part until it blended smoothly where it joined the plastic.

OK, enough-- go buy the Fearsome Foes set now!
