Cancelled like every good Fox show.

But I can guarantee that they will let Oliver Beene (aka Malcolm in the middle in the 60's, just twenty times less entertaining) stay on:(

Is Arrested Development in danger of getting cancelled? I love that show. And I can't believe they actually brought Oliver Beene back. That show just sucks. They put Malcolm in the Middle and the Wonder Years into a blender then sucked all of the heart out.

The beginning of the CBS movie "It Must Be Love" had a 9.7/15 at 9 p.m. to allow CBS to hold first. NBC got a 6.2/9 out of "American Dreams" and stayed in second, beating the 5.6/9 for a new "Alias." FOX was a distant fourth with "Malcolm in the Middle" and "Arrested Development," while The WB stayed competitive in fifth thanks to the 2.9/5 for "The Surreal Life."

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - The first joke about the poor-to-middling ratings for "Arrested Development" comes just seconds into Thursday night's (March 11) session at the William S. Paley Festival. Introducing episodes for the overflowing crowd, the show's creator Mitchell Hurwitz notes that the second episode is going to air this coming Wednesday (March 17) following an "American Idol" result show.
"We expect to get mediocre to insignificant ratings," Hurwitz jokes, as if that constitutes an improvement (which it would).

While the Nielsen numbers suggest that "Arrested Development" is one of the lowest rated comedies on the Big Four networks, you'd never know it from the passionate and devoted crowd at the Paley panel.

The dedication and insularity of the show's fan base is such that several members of the crowd greet Hurwitz's jokes about miniscule ratings with bafflement, as if the sold-out Hollywood venue were representative of a breakout mainstream following. Others plead with Hurwitz for news about the show's cloudy long-term prognosis.
"I think FOX considers us a first-year show that needs to find its audience," Hurwitz says hopefully.

Hurwitz claims that he has basically stopped calling in for the show's Nielsen numbers and has instead started to troll the Internet looking for evidence that the week's jokes were appreciated by individual viewers. Still, members of the cast admit that they'd love to reach an even larger following.

"My dream has always been to be on a show that holds 'Malcolm's' numbers," deadpans David Cross, who plays doctor-turned-actor Tobias, regarding the show's "Malcolm in the Middle" lead-in.

Even as their little comedy is gasping for life, the cast of "Arrested Development" remains optimistic and, most importantly, pleased with the work they're doing. This is the rare Paley session in which the stars on the stage instigated two rounds of applause for the writers sitting in the audience.

"When I was working with David Kelley on 'Ally,' I think I saw him maybe two times," says Portia de Rossi. "We would get the scripts and we'd say the words."

Instead of that scenario, the "Development" cast speaks of constant interaction between actors and writers in a creative process that leads to dialogue that sounds improvised but is, in reality, "rock solid" by the time the show is put to digital video.

The result is one of television's quirkiest shows, a critical favorite and a recent Golden Globe nominee for outstanding comedy series.

The show's freewheeling production style has also provided fertile material for potential guest stars. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Lipton make their first appearances in upcoming episodes, playing a blind lawyer and a prison warden. The show has also forever changed the way viewers look at Carl Weathers and Liza Minnelli.

"She was very gung-ho," Hurwitz says of the "Cabaret" Oscar winner. "She's such a pro. We'd seen her work before, but nonetheless everyone was so surprised by how good she was."

"She was a really kind, gracious person and a great kisser," adds Tony Hale, whose Buster served as a love interest for Minnelli's character.

Rabid fans may already be drafting their letters to FOX in dread and anticipation of a possible cancellation after this season (www.savearresteddevelopment.com is still available, guys), but the producers swear the show has advocates at FOX.

"They're shockingly supportive," Hurwitz promises.

Arrested Development is such a great show, so I have full faith that FOX'll give it the ax like so many other great shows, while keeping King of the Hill and Malcom in the Middle (I have no idea why these shows are still on the air, they suck). FOX needs to give the show a better time slot, after That 70s Show would be perfect, it was going up against Curb Your Enthusiasm and is still against Alias and now the Soporanos. Maybe FOX should put it on Monday, nothing's on Monday nights and they won't have to give up one of their five American Karoke showings.

Hopefully Fox will release it on DVD ala 24 to gain some viewers. And give it a better timeslot. Fox seems behind it, but for how long?

FOX averaged a 9.7 rating/16 share in primetime, easily beating CBS' 7.3/12. NBC was a close third at 7.2/12, followed by ABC, 5.6/9; The WB, 2.1/3; and UPN, 1.2/2.

The results were much the same among adults 18-49. FOX won the ad-friendly demographic with a 7.1 rating, while CBS took second with a 4.2. NBC averaged 3.7, ABC 3.4, The WB 1.0 and UPN 0.6.

"Survivor: All-Stars," airing on Wednesday because of CBS' NCAA Tournament coverage set for Thursday night, won the 8 p.m. hour with a 10.8/18. FOX posted an 8.9/14 with "That '70s Show" (6.3/11) and the first half of the "Idol" results show (11.5/18). An hour's worth of "My Wife and Kids" averaged 5.6/9 for ABC. A repeat of last week's "Apprentice" finished fourth for NBC. "Smallville's" 2.0/3 was good enough to give fifth place to The WB. "Game Over" and "The Mullets" barely registered on UPN.

FOX moved into the lead at 9 p.m. with a 10.5/17 average. The conclusion of "American Idol" jumped up to 14.9/23 and was followed by "Arrested Development," which dipped to 6.1/10 (still way above its season average). NBC moved into second with a "Law & Order" repeat, 7.4/12. "Extreme Makeover" kept ABC in third. CBS dropped to fourth with "The King of Queens," 6.4/10, and the premiere of "The Stones," 5.0/8. A second "Smallville" held onto fifth for The WB, while UPN's "Enterprise" rerun averaged 1.3/2.

It is fairly logical but it also works to reinforce the gay subtext that has followed this character. This might possibly the best episode of the entire season, IMO. They brought back the character of Kitty and she was hilarious as well (Even though I privately hoped that she had bit the dust in the yacht explosion just so the family would be in the clear). And Gob is always hilarious. Buster was absent from this particular episode and I missed him.:(

I liked how Kitty and Gob both uttered 'this will be the last time you see these'! Then Fox's John Beard rushes to report the incident. I missed the start of the show but still it was a good effort.

Overall, CBS averaged an 8.5 rating/14 share for the evening, edging NBC's 7.7/13. ABC was well back with a 5.9/10 for third. FOX claimed fourth at 4.7/8 followed by The WB's 1.6/3.

Among adults 18-49, though FOX moved up into a first place tie with NBC, as both networks posted a 3.8 rating in the coveted demographic. ABC was close behind at 3.6 and CBS' 3.4 rating wasn't far off. The WB trailed with a 1.1 rating.

CBS began the night with a big lead, taking an 11.4/20 with the newsmagazine "60 Minutes." NBC was well back in second with "Dateline," which had a 5.9/10 to top ABC's "America's Funniest Home Videos." Over on FOX, two episodes of "King of the Hill" averaged a 3.3/6, beating a "Smallville" repeat on The WB.

Staying in the lead at 8 p.m., CBS got a 10.4/16 out of freshman drama "Cold Case." ABC moved up to second with the 6.6/10 for "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." FOX was third with the 6.1/10 for two episodes of "The Simpsons," which bettered the totals for NBC's "American Dreams." On The WB, "Charmed" had a 1.9/3.

NBC moved in front at 9 p.m. with the 9.5/14 for "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." CBS' "Jesus" plummeted in its second half-hour, but held onto a 7.1/11 for the hour. ABC got a 5.3/8 out of "Alias," beating FOX's "Malcolm in the Middle" (5.4/8) and "Arrested Development" (4.1/6). The WB's "High School Reunion" was fifth.

I think the reason why people donīt watch this isnīt so much the writing, thatīs decent, or the cast and direction, are great. The problem is essentially the premise. Nobody gives a crap a rich family lost all money. They can eat s**t and die for all people care, and if people donīt care for the characters, they donīt watch.

I watched the Fox lineup for the first time in a longtime and none of the three were consistant and smart as the second season premiere as Arrested Development. They setup the the season perfectly. So many funny scenes: Gob playing pool, Tobias in bluemakeup, Oscar constantly being arrested, Lindsey on her date, Buster and Lucille threatening each other, Anyong in Uncle Sam gettup, the father figure music, Barry Zucker in jail having the time of his life. And Gob saying the tears aren't coming. All this plus Martin Short will have a recurring role plus characters from last season might make an appearence. They've got the Emmy already wrapped up for next year.

Every scene with oscar gettin his @$$ kicked by the cop.

Every scene with Gob.

I like that this season they are showing more of Michael's mental issues. It seems the first season, he was the only sane one...with a bit of insanity hinted at...this season it seems we get to see his insanity...he is obsessed with them needing him.

Yeah Tambor will be seen as George Sr. (who is with Kitty) and Oscar. I'm liking that Oscar is Buster's dad. Or so it seems.

GOB and Barry (the family lawyer)are my favourites.

Here are the descriptions for the next two shows. Must see comedy!

The following week on Sunday, Nov. 14 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT), due to Michael's continuing legal troubles, Gob agrees to be the company figurehead while Michael pulls the strings, an arrangement which, of course, ends up driving Michael completely crazy when Gob's showmanship and ludicrous ideas impress the board. Meanwhile, the mistaken identities continue when George Sr. is arrested in Mexico for a crime that Oscar committed, and Oscar takes George Sr.'s place in a way no one could have predicted.

In a spicy twist, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT heads South of the Border on Sunday, Nov. 21 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT), when the staircar turns up in Mexico. Increasingly frustrated and resentful about being abandoned, Michael wants to find his fugitive father to give him a piece of his mind. George Michael invites his girlfriend, Ann, whom Michael does not like, on the road trip, and a suspicious Gob hires a bounty hunter to retrieve them. Things only go from bad to worse when Michael inadvertently leaves Ann in Mexico.

Loving the Bush jabs with GOB. "7 minutes after finding the briefcase" last week and then tonight's with the Mission Accomplished banner and dressed as a construction worker. funniest part of the episode, until Tobias showed up in that diamond cream and needed to go to the hospital.

The Blue Dot on Oscar, Buster listing his short comings, Tobias hiding in his blue paint, another Fox News John Beard cameo, GOB using the pockets on the pool table as a drink holder, Rock-Paper-Scissors, GM talking about Ann, and George Sr in Mexico and the Cornballer reference.

Matt
11-15-2004, 10:30 AM
I wonder if George Sr. is really executed?

Man, but great episode last night, Tobias was hillarious (as always), as was GOB.

I'm loving the hints of Oscar being Buster's father, I can't wait to see where this entire storyline with Buster joining the army goes.

Ron Howard's voice overs, as always are hillarious...they give the show some good, dry humor...and they are always placed perfectly.

One complaint about the show...without George Michael lusting over May Be, she really has nothing to do. She just sorta pops up every now and then. The writers need to incorporate her and Anyong in the stories more.

At anyrate, next week looks to be hillarious, I can't wait to see how GOB goes about hiring a bounty hunter.

Oh, and does anyone kind think theyre trying to make Gob like Bush? There's the whole Iraq thing and some other stuff i cant remember now, and then in the second episode, with the house, there's a big Mission Accomplished sign and Gob comes in dramatically from the air. That is some subtle ****:D

Fox's stats for last week I believe but this might be from 2 weeks ago. Football ran late so Malcolm had that big lead in, which helped it beat Simpsons. AD is in the middle there and it disappointingly can't beat the lame reality shows ahead of it, but 4.1 isn't actually that bad. Oh, the season 1 DVD is in the top 50 sellers on amazon.com, and it comes highly recommended. Meaning, buy it you apes, because you need to watch each episode of the show at least thrice to catch all the subtleties.

#1: Malcolm in the Middle: 6.3/10
#2: The Simpsons: 5.8/9
#3: The Swan: 5.3/8
#4: Nanny 911: 5.2/8
#5: America's Most Wanted: 5.0/8
#6: Trading Spouses: 4.9/7
#7: Cops: 4.7/8
#8: The O.C.: 4.3/7
#9: Arrested Development: 4.1/6
#10: House: 4.0/6
#11: That 70's Show: 3.9/6
#12: Quintuplets: 3.2/5
#13: The Rebel Billionaire: Branson's Quest For the Best: 2.9/4
#14: My Big Fat Obnoxious Boss: 2.7/4
#15: North Shore: 2.6/4

I missed the start but was able to catch both Xmas parties. Gob is such an *******, and his little tirade in what he'll do to people was hilarious. Then bragging about his suit (covered in crap on the back) and wearing the banana suit was great. Afternoon Delight or Afternoon Deelite was a smart choice and poor Tobias. I asked for season one on DVD so fingers crossed. And how about Ann's religious family party?

Spoiler on Martin Short's guest appearence. Can't wait.

He's done it: Martin Short has found a character even more sexually repulsive than his Jabba the Hutt-like alter ego, Jiminy Glick. (No, he's not playing David Gest.) This February, the actor-comic-contortionist will guest-star on Fox's Arrested Development as a 90-year-old former fitness guru (think Jack LaLanne, only much, much scarier) who offers to help bail out the bankrupt Bluths in exchange for a one-nighter with Portia de Rossi's Lindsay. If she says no, I hear Janice Dickinson's game.

They had continuing storylines on Senfeld. Larry David felt it made it more realistic referencing previous episodes. The most Seinfeld ever did was the California two-parter, or bringing back a character for a much later episode, like Poppy or Babu. Just dropping one reference here or there (usually about one of Jerry's girlfriends from a previous ep) doesn't even compare with AD's story. AD is a continuously evolving tale, intimidating to many viewers. A lot of jokes in the show can't be fully appreciated if you only watch episodes sporadically. Completely the opposite case with Seinfeld.

Shifty

Yes AD is a more evolving tale but remember The Pilot season, George/Susan engagment, Kramer's coffee table book, Elaine/Puddy - while not like AD it had stuff that might make the casual viewer go "What Chinese restuarant?" Well Arrested Dvelopment can stay AD while AD! can be American Dad since in the opening credits '!' is used in the title, but I doubt people will use it or notice.

Gob: My gut is telling me no... but my gut is also very hungry.

Drug Dealer: You set us up!
Gob: No! These are the strippers! Look how hot they are!

Gob: I'm a failure. I can't even fake the death of a stripper.

Michael: What's the matter with you? Didn't you bag some woman you're never going to see again?
Gob: Well, I broke a couple of my own rules. She knows I'm Gob Bluth, and... we got married, and...

Wife of GOB: I'm in love with your brother-in-law.
George Oscar 'Gob' Bluth: You're in love with your own brother? The one in the army?
Wife of GOB: No. Your sister's husband.
George Oscar 'Gob' Bluth: Michael? Michael!
Wife of GOB:No. That your sister's brother.
George Oscar 'Gob' Bluth: No, I'm my sister's brother. You're in love with me? Me.
Wife of GOB: I'm in love with Tobias.
George Oscar 'Gob' Bluth: My brother-in-law?
Wife of GOB: I know it can never be, so I'm leaving. I'm enlisting in the army.
George Oscar 'Gob' Bluth: To be with your brother?
Wife of GOB: No!

Gob: I lost Earl Milford.
Michael: What?
Gob: I didn't know it was him! Although he was spectacularly quiet in there. You can always tell a Milford man

Ones I try to use in everyday conversation:

Tobias: You have to be some sort of She-Hulk to open this.

FOX Shifts 'American Dad,' May Trim 'Development'
(Wednesday, February 09 09:02 AM http://tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,271|93477|1|,00.html

Even though its reviews were almost universally middling-to-negative, the preview of "American Dad" drew more than 15 million viewers to FOX on Sunday (Feb. 6) night. That successful performance has prompted FOX to juggle its future Sunday line-up, which may mean bad things for Emmy-winning comedy "Arrested Development."
"American Dad," the new animated comedy from "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, will still have its real premiere on Sunday, May 1. FOX has, however, moved the show up an hour from 9:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ET. "American Dad" will now officially launch between the 350th episode of "The Simpsons" and the fourth season premiere of "Family Guy."

The series, which will air encores as part of Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block, focuses on mid-level CIA agent Stan Smith, his wife, his two kids, his alien and his fish with the brain of a German guy.

FOX also announced that the schedule will allow the first three episodes of "American Dad" to air after new episodes of "The Simpsons."
As a result of the shift, "Arrested Development" will now have to end its second season by late April. According to The Hollywood Reporter, FOX is expected to reduce its order for "Arrested Development," though specifics haven't been announced. Despite endless critical acclaim and awards attention, "Development" is averaging only 6.06 million viewers per week this season in the Sunday 8:30 p.m. time slot

As one of the few who enjoyed American Dad, now I'm starting to dislike the show. It doesn't matter what you put on Super Bowl Sunday after the game, a nice portion will keep it on the channel and watch so I don't see the need to move AD! an hour ealry bc it got 15 million - I think its just an excuse for Fox to slowly let AD die.

NBC would most likely pounce on it seeing how bad their sitcom lineup currently is. Great companion to Scrubs on Tuesdays. CBS is the most watched network so maybe with their ego they'll grab it and try to show Fox it can surrive. Then there is ABC which could shove it on TGIF but if Fox does cancel the show (reducing episode order and being left off sweeps isn't a great sign) I do agree that its one of the rare shows that will get cancelled and then picked up by another network.

Apparently the show's ratings is down 7% this season with the move to the post Simpsons slot. Has anyone watched the show in its 16th season? Its nowhere close in style or quality as AD, the brainwashed zombies watching this trite aren't sticking around to watch AD. I think AD would do much better airing after Family Guy. I'm here in Canada with my DVD set but with no Nielsen box.

With the order down to 18 that means only 9 more episodes left for the season. 3 episodes for the next 3 months I'm guessing. Hopefully Ricky Gervais's episode still happens and that Mitch Hurwitz can still craft a great season (series?) finale. And if Fox does cancel the show I would hope Gail Berman has some ovaries and cancel it outright right away not leaving the fans waiting months to find out and vice versa come out and say AD will return for a third season.

GOB: (upon seeing Michael) Michael! (upon seeing Michael with Tobias in bathrobes) Michael?

GOB: She probably figured that we'd never track her. But we lost her. Everyone put on white robes and out smarted us.
