Anne Hathaway won an Oscar this year based in part on her performance of one song in Les Misérables.

Now she’s starring in Song One which Worldview Entertainment has signed on to finance and produce.

The drama is a feature debut for helmer Kate Barker-Froyland who will direct from her own screenplay about a young woman who strikes up a relationship with her ailing brother’s favorite musician.

Newly-minted Lotus Entertainment is handling international sales. CAA has domestic.

Worldview’s Christopher Woodrow and Molly Conners will produce alongside Hathaway’s Rachel Getting Married producers Marc Platt and Jonathan Demme, with Hathaway herself and Adam Shulman.

“Anne is a brilliant actress and we think she is perfect for this project,” said Woodrow. “We have a very strong creative team and we are looking forward to the start of filming in a couple of weeks.”

Worldview’s Maria Cestone, Sarah Johnson Redlich and Hoyt David Morgan will executive produce.

Other information floating around includes: Hathaway will play an archaeologist returning to the US from a dig in Morocco when her brother is injured. She soon falls for her brother’s favourite musician, a rock star played by British singer-actor Johnny Flynn. And - Johnathan Rice and Jenny Lewis are writing songs for Flynn to perform, but one track will be reserved for Hathaway.

The Cabin the Woods director Drew Goddard appears to have found his next project. The Wrap reports that Goddard is in talks to helm 20th Century Fox's big screen adaptation of Andy Weir's 2012 e-book publication The Martian.

The book, which is currently unavailable pending a print edition from Random House in 2014, is simply described as being, "The adventures of an astronaut stranded on Mars."

Although Cabin was Goddard's directorial debut, he's also well-known as a screenwriter, having worked on television shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel," and "Alias" and feature film projects like Cloverfield and the upcoming World War Z.

Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood are attached to produce The Martian.

Probably two of the most well received trilogy in modern film history. Which do you think is better as a trilogy?

I must say that the LOTR trilogy wins this one effortlessly. The story just works organically as a story split in three parts as opposed to the rather manufactured link of TDKR to BB and TDK. The first two also stood perfectly on their own; served as their own self contained film. Whereas LOTR resolved most of its narrative threads only at the long, numerous climaxes of ROTK.

There's been talk for a while now of reviving the "Gremlins" franchise via a sequel, but sadly -- in our opinion -- that appears to have devolved into plans for a remake.

Bing: More on 'Gremlins' | Bing: More on Seth Grahame-Smith

According to Bloody Disgusting, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg are producing the project for Warner Bros. The initial idea was a sequel to the original 1984 movie (and its under-appreciated, totally bonkers 1990 follow-up, "Gremlins 2: The New Batch"), but now in typical fashion any idea of creativity has been thrown out the window in favor of a rehash.

There's no word yet on a director (we suppose original "Gremlins" and "Gremlins 2" director Joe Dante won't be invited to the dance), or whether Grahame-Smith will write the picture too. We kind of hope he doesn't.

Why? Well, while we have not read his books "Pride and Prejudice with Zombies" and "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," we do know that Grahame-Smith wrote the screenplay for the pretty lousy 2012 movie version of the latter. He also wrote the horrific script for last year's unwatchable "Dark Shadows" remake from Tim Burton. In Hollywood logic, that should automatically qualify him to write a remake of one of the 1980s' most beloved horror comedies, right? (He's also written a yet-to-be-filmed "Beetlejuice" redux and has done some work on the new "Fantastic Four" script.)

Make no mistake, "Gremlins" is beloved, partially because the creatures, brought to life by puppetry and animatronics, had such a handmade charm to them while also being thoroughly creepy. We have no doubt that all that will be replaced by CGI in the new film.

In case you don't recall, the story centered on a teenager (Zach Galligan) whose father brings home a cuddly but mysterious pet called a Mogwai. There are three rules one must follow when it comes to taking care of the little critter, and when those rules are disobeyed, all hell breaks loose.

Will the new version keep the fairly nasty tone of the original? Who knows? Just thinking about this makes us tired.
Red Sea Media has announced plans for Squirrels, a new horror-thriller that the company has just acquired international sales rights for from Bazelevs, Timur Bekmambetovs production company. Bekmambetov is best known as director of the hit international films Night Watch, Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

When a young mans estranged father is killed under suspicious circumstances, he returns home for the first time in years to get to the bottom of the mystery. Hoping to uncover some logical explanation, he instead finds his moms sleazy new boyfriend, a natural gas company buying up the town, an angry female sheriff who happens to be his ex-girlfriend, and an army of flesh-eating squirrels hellbent on destroying everything in their path due to an erosion of their food chain as a result of environmental destruction by the gas company.

Squirrels, like people, can seem very cuteuntil they get hungry! said Bekmambetov.

I am very appreciative of the opportunity to sell a Timur Bekmambetov produced film this year. Timur is a tremendous creative talent, and its going to be a lot of fun for everyone involved, especially for the buyers, to be a part of this exciting project, said Red Sea Media CEO Roman Kopelevich.

The film was written by Daniel Antoniazzi & Ben Shiffrin, based on an idea by Bekmambetov. Lisa Ellzey and Michele Wolkoff are executive producers. The production is currently setting a director, with an A-list cast expected to sign shortly.
