Ender's Game

Petersen Confirms Ender's Game
Troy helmer still aboard film adaptation.
by Chris Monfette and Stax
September 20, 2007 - Troy director Wolfgang Petersen has confirmed that he is still attached to direct the big-screen version of Orson Scott Card's novel Ender's Game.

While doing press for his recently released director's cut DVD of Troy, Petersen spoke to IGN and other outlets about his future projects:

"I'm just, at the moment, developing three science fiction films. Two for Columbia. The Grays, based on Whitley Strieber's book. The other is called Uprising. And the other is Ender's Game," Petersen revealed.

The filmmaker sees Ender's Game as "a very, very tricky adaptation and an incredibly fascinating concept, but I still think that one day, I will do Ender's Game. I just recently had a meeting with Orson Scott Card. But we're hanging in there and, yes, we will do that picture."

Just don't let it get TOO Hollywood, otherwise it'll end up a bad "Starship Troopers" rip-off.

I love the book and have read it several times....but I don't think it is possible to faithfully make it into a movie.

I wish they would hurry up with this movie.

If they ever make it into a movie, they're going to wind up making the kids older. Wasn't Bean only 4 years old?

They might by a little bit.

And yes I believe he was 4.

That's why I said I didn't think it was filmable....at least as live action that is.

Re: Ender's Game

While four is a little young, I know there are workable six-twelve year old actors out there who could really knock this thing out of the park, with all the adult emotion and pathos necessary... admittedly, they might take a few more shooting days to do it, but they can.

The book, from my perspective, is absolutely filmable... it's tricky, yes, but it's nowhere near undoable.

I'm up for making the kids a tiny bit older. From my recollection of the book (and wikipedia) Bean could have easily been 5 by the time he reached Battle School.

Re: Ender's Game

Bean may have already reached 5, but he was also genetically engineered so that he was much smaller than the other kids--he barely looked 3 when he entered Battle School. They'll never pull that off as well as the book did.

Another tricky park of adapting the movie is that Ender brutally kills two kids in the book, the first one when he was only 6. I'd love to see how a studio handles a scene like that, because you know they'll want to market it as a kids movie.

I just read the description of what the novel is about...can someone explain in a bit of detail why this can't be made into a film?

It doesn't sound too 'out there' to me.

Re: Ender's Game

Well the kids are really young like one of the main characters like we have said was around 4 years old. It also has good bit of violence and cursing they have the kids doing in the book.

I plan on getting ready to read it again soon. You should check it out.

Re: Ender's Game

My friend and I were talking about that this weekend, that they would more than likely have to make everyone older. Just because a lot of people would get angry for having little kids in situations from the book.

Re: Ender's Game

Even if they make the kids older the concept will absolutely work. I cannot wait for this movie.

Most of the book is about hundreds of children being trained for war. The child labor laws for children working in film makes for short filming days. The studios have to provide teachers on set that hold class with the kids for several hours per working day. There are scenes of little kids killing other little kids. There are scenes of nudity of bothe boys and girls, as well as them being nude together.

Was the author a pedophile or were there good reasons for having naked kids in his story?
