Official Nintendo 3DS Thread

- You won't need to wear 3D glasses to enjoy the 3D effects (somehow), according to their release.

- Backwards compatibility will be incorporated for DS and DSi games support.

- It may have an accelerometer for tilt-controls with motion-led gaming, just like the iPhone/iPod Touch.

- The screen might be higher-res than anything we've seen from Nintendo before, probably just 720p though.

- It'll have two screens just like previous portables, but they'll be used in conjunction as one giant screen, according to RPAD.tv, who convinced developers to talk to them at GDC.

- A Tegra chip could be powering it.

- Nintendo might put a 3G sim in, for over-the-air downloads.

- Those over-the-air downloads might include ebooks, something already seen on the DSi XL.

The XL is just another in the long line of 6 years of DS iterations. The 3DS seems like it is the next-gen Nintendo handheld.

still, you would think they'd at least wait to release that before announcing a new system. People that might have picked up the XL now might have the mindset in thinking, why get that when Nintendo has just revealed that they are releasing a new, better system? I dont get the thought process in announcing this before dropping the XL. To me that would be the equivalent of Sony prior to the PSPGo's launch, announcing that the PSP2 is coming out in the following year

Because DSs are still selling in ridiculous amounts and I'm sure Nintendo isn't banking on the XL to bring in huge profits. Frankly I'm still confused as to why they even made the thing.

The general public will not know about this strange 3DS announcement (even on IGN you have to scroll down to find it), and will find out around E3 when Nintendo makes a bigger deal of it. I really doubt that we will hear/see much more about this until then.

Probably headtracking.

I have been reading about this a little bit ago, and over at PA we've been discussing it at length.

I'm interested to hear more at E3. I scoffed at touch screen, dual screen, and motion controls.

I've been wrong on all three accounts, and I love the Wii, and the DS is one of the best platforms this generation for gaming. Nintendo has my faith that they have something really cool cooking. We'll see though.

Ive seen the ds vid before - but damn that other one is awesome - I think a previouss comment by one of the big boys at nintendo said it would feature headtracking so its probaby more inline with the second vid - if its like that with full games its not only gonna be awesome but its gonna sell big time

looks like it will be a more traditional 3d method than the head positioning one

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the paper that usually breaks Nintendo hardware stories, reported on some of the additional tech that could go into the system. Nintendo plans on using a control stick for controlling characters in 3D; while the paper does not use the term "analogue stick," this is presumably what's being referred to. The system will also include rumble. Nintendo acquired patents for this control technology last year, the paper reports.

The paper also repors that the system will have expanded battery life and greater wireless range over the current DS. Its screen won't be as large as the DSi XL screen, though. Nintendo is also looking into including an accelerometer, which would allow you to tilt the system to control the action.

The papers didn't list any sources for their information. However, this is typical for larger mainstream Japanese publications, so even if the above is speculation, there's probably some good foundation behind it
I'm certainly intrigued.

hopefully we'll get an original mario game at launch.

Wow, that sounds really cool - but I wonder how the actual design of the DS will hold up. I still have "the brick" (the original silver DS) and it's lasted me years. A lot of people I know got the DSi or DSLite and within two weeks, it's broken. Those little things are so fragile, which is just not worth it to me.

I think a new main series Mario game would be a safe bet. There hasn't been one on the DS in four years.

Doubtful. Technology has come a long way since 1995.

Man you are missing out. The original DS is so bad compared to the newer iterations. I also don't know anyone who has broken one.

Re: 3DS Announced!

This will probably be the point where I finally buy a DS lol. I was tempted last year, but put it off, and kept putting it off. There are games I want to play on it, but my plate was already full with console gaming, and the PSP more or less kept me content enough (even tho I use it to listen to music, watch videos, or surf the web more than game). With a new Nintendo handheld coming out all the of the DS stuff will (hopefully) become dirt cheap. I'm usually not into waiting a gen to get last gen stuff cheap as I like playing new stuff as it comes out, but this might be one of those cases. Who knows tho, maybe I'll be impressed and just buy the 3DS at launch, and just buy the old backwards compatible DS games instead.

The only thing that does bother me, and it might sound weird, but it's like Nintendo can do no wrong with this stuff. They put out a variation of the DS once or twice a year, then announce a new handheld before an upcoming version is even out, and it's . However when talk of the PSP Go was happening everyone was like, "WTF! The PSP 3000 is coming out too, Damn Sony!!!". Or like the Wii with motion controls first, then Sony and MS getting criticized for getting into that market. However then Sony pushes 3D gaming and everyone says it'll suck, but when Nintendo wants to launch hardware around 3D gaming it's 'awesome'. I guess that kinda sounds like I'm being...bitter maybe... towards Nintendo, it's just I guess it bothers me a bit. Especially after how Nintendo higher ups were bashing 3D gaming and saying it was pointless when Sony announced it'd push it, and now they're marketing their next big thing around 3D. Then again, Nintendo does have a better track record of supporting it's peripherals and gimmicks than Sony (Guncon, Eyetoy, etc.)

Hardware durability has always been one of Nintendo's strong points.

I mean I still have my working NES, Super NES, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, GBA, and DS.

All of these still work perfectly.
