Favourite batman director

okay it dones what it says on the tin. purely and simply what do u prefer the: the burton films? the schumacher films? the nolan films?

to be honest i think this boils down to Nolans trilogy vs Burtons Duology but in the interests of being even i'll include schumachers films aswell for fanboys of that.

for me i love both the burton + nolan series's. i'd like the next reboot to be a composite of those 2 types. gun to my head i'd maybe go with burtons films- i loved the film noir element to them and for me Batman 89 is still my favorite. for me its better than The Dark Knight.

tim burton all theway.perfect balance of comic book kookiness and gritty darkness. Returns is still the darkest batman film to date. nolans arent so much dark, just more serious. but Returns is still the darkest because its so cerebrial and not easy to explain away. its very tormented film, while at the same time being a blast to watch. to me they are just perfect and what i imagine when i think of batman. schumachers 'Forever comes in 2nd place, i just love that film, the look the performances are all awsome and the fun of the film has yet to be matched. nolans to me, i honestly cant watch them. they really just bore me. when did batman become a crime drama? and the music score was completely absent from so many scenes. very upsetting.

Nolan, but Burton's style was also perfect, as a whole they're tied, but i prefered Nolan's

Nolan. Begins and TDK stomp out Burton and Schumacher's messes for moi.

Re: Favourite batman director

No Batman movie director has really given me the Batman movie I'd consider one of the greatest movies of all time or anything. I do enjoy them all for various reasons but they all have their flaws. They all have their moments like I prefer the villains in Burton's movie as well as the production design and music.

I also enjoy the scope of the Nolan movies how they try to be layered in a more literal way as opposed to the thematic style in Burton's movies. TDKR ruins Nolan's series for me. Didn't really enjoy it much but I think his first 2 are up there with Burton's in terms of great pop entertainment especially TDK.

I enjoy moments in both Schumacher movies too but I can't say that I like them equally compared to the other 4 movies I really dig out of the modern WB Batman movie series. I think they have their moments of great superhero story energy and & animated comic book atmosphere and some genuine heart. But they are seldom seen especially in B&R.

Nolan. Not that some things from the Burton movies wouldn't have improved the so-called "Dark Knight Trilogy". Not hating the Schumacher movies either, I actually like them (both) but they are very flawed.

If there was a " I like Burton and Nolan equally" option that would be my pick.

Up until 2012, I rated Burton and Nolan as equals. But TDKR puts Nolan over the top. 3 really good Batfilms vs. 2 really good Batfilms.

Christopher Nolan directed 3 Batman movies I really enjoy more than the grand majority of superhero films
Tim Burton directed my favorite film to date, then released a messy follow up that fails to entertain me

Nolan, but I've got plenty of time for Burton's take.

Nolan but I always liked Burton's take on the character.

I think Nolan is a better director, but I do prefer Burton and his take on Batman overall (at least the Batman character). I suppose it's equally Michael Keaton's take on Batman as it is Burton's.

I've only liked one of Burton's Batfilms.

I never liked any of Schumacher's Batfilms.

I've enjoyed all of Nolan's trilogy.

While I still love the '89 film, Returns has only gotten worse for me over time.

However, I've thoroughly enjoyed all three of the Nolan films so, yeah....Nolan gets my vote.

Re: Favourite batman director

Yup I agree Returns has aged worse than B'89. It's way too Tim Burtonish for moi. B'89 didn't go over board on the Burton touches.

Re: Favourite batman director

I like Burton overall, so I can enjoy Returns as a Burton movie that just so happens to feature Batman. As a Batman film it leaves quite a lot to be desired. I loved the film as a kid for the score and visuals though, and will always be fond of Keaton in the cowl.

B'89 has its flaws too of course, but it's solid as a Batman movie. It feels more like a studio picture, but it has some of Burton's quirks. Returns is where they let him off the leash and he went full "art mode" on it.

That's why I respect Nolan a lot. I feel like he was able to successfully approach his films simultaneously as commercial projects and artistic endeavors. He pushed the envelope as much as possible, but ultimately it was all in an effort to excite and entertain audiences...not scare them off (I'm looking at you Daniel Waters!)

Re: Favourite batman director

Daniel Waters didn't scare me off. I love Batman Returns partly because of how bat**** insane some of his writing in that movie was. "Just the pussy I've been looking for" is as endearing a quote to me as his infamous "I love my dead gay son" quote from Heathers.

Re: Favourite batman director

Oh don't get me wrong, BR definitely has some insanely quotable dialogue.

"One can never have too much power. If my life has a meaning...that's the meaning."

I was more referring to Waters saying that he'd get a kick out of the crying kids in the movie theater (I think he said that or something to that effect). Came across a tad mean-spirited towards the general audience. And I did have nightmares about The Penguin as a kid. But hey, probably helped shape me into the Bat-fan I am today :word:

Batman Returns is a very challenging film, for good and bad reasons.

My guess is that he found it funny because kids should be scared of Batman villains... and the fact that parents were upset about it was a bit ironic.

i really want to question what flaws Batman 89 had- it's defo one of my fav films ever. just interested.

i don't agree that either have aged poorly. i think they both fantastic as they ever were. just my humble opinion!!

So I'm guessing you loved this scene?

this is exactly how i feel about TDK and TDKR. tim burtons 2 films are far more batman then nolans 2 sequels. as batman films they just suck to me. i was able to get over the fact that batman drives a tank in the new ones, in the hopes he would aquire more bat-centric vehicles later on. instead all he got was a tumbler lite motorcycle and a giant lobster transformer toy. LAME. tim burton gave us not only the ultimate batmobile but the coolest batplane and then the batboat. all have the slick bat design. i even thought the Forever vehicles were great too, even with the blue neon. but the tank tumbler stuff just never felt "batman" to me. i remember thinking oh great, more GI joe toys. batmans point is that he obsessed with his creation, thus his vehicles have a bat-look to them and hes got batsymbols everywhere. but no, he just goes to fox like his own personal Q and just borrows stuff.

the only nolan batman film i really liked was batman begins. the narrows was how ALL of gotham should have looked. not just one part of it. the other 2 movies were just chicago renamed gotham. creativly speaking, the nolan films are dull visually which is ironic considering they are based on a visual medium of comic books. they look more like bond movies of the 90's then they do batman films.
