What do you guys rank up there for great film trilogies?

Honestly, only LOTR and Star Wars can compete with TDKR for my favorite film trilogies. Tons of other series have 2 excellent films but no third one of similar value.

LOTR and Star Wars, yeah. But Back to the Future is way up there aswell.
They're the "'Flawless Trilogy' Trilogy".

The Dark Knight Trilogy is my favourite of all time. They just seemed like films made for me.

I'd rank LOTR, Back to the Future, and Toy Story trilogies before The Dark Knight one.

Yup. They all have class movies three times in a row. Can't say the same about Knight's trilogy thanks to Rises.

The TDK trilogy is the best for me. no doubt in my mind. its one of only 4 trilogies where all 3 are 5/5 rated for me. others are lord of the rings, the original star wars and toy story.

I'm hoping The Hobbit, Iron Man, Three Flavours Cornetto and Hellboy will be on the list pretty soon.

Do star wars still count because its 6 films now. One complete story. And lord of the rings because we are getting 3 hobbit films soon and are prequels to the lord of the rings. One massive story. Just asking.

Completely forgot about the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy if The Worlds End is any good that will certainly be high up on mine.

The Ocean's trilogy was good at best IMO. I adore the first film but the second is just off, there is something really not right about it. The third just tries to be the first again (cue posts saying "Much like TDKR then")

I think it's one of the best. It's absolutely a modern classic comparable to the original Star Wars trilogy and Lord of the Rings and it will stand the test of time among them.

Kinda early for me at this point to make that determination.I have Star Wars OT and the first 3 Indy flicks firmly in the 1 & 2 spots,and that's not likely to change.

Ah yes, Toy Story and Back to the Future are definitely up there.


I've always really loved all the Matrix movies as well, even if the second and third couldn't quite live up to the genius of the first.

but star wars has 6 movies and indy had 4 so how can they be trilogys. How can you just exclude the parts that you dont like then call it a trilogy. George lucas said they are ment to be watched 1-6. Thats only have a story.
Indy 4 is just what it is part 4. Marion was in part 1, same actress then in part 4, same actress. Same director. Same indy. You can not watch it. Thats your choice but to say its not part of the story or series no matter how bad you think it is, is wrong. It aint tri any more it was but now is quad.

It's not ranked in what I see as great film trilogies largely due to the underwhelming and very disappointing third chapter that is The Dark Knight Rises. I do love Batman Begins and The Dark Knight very much though.

I really am surprised at how much TDKR has disappointed some posters here. As a massive massive fan of BB and TDK I walked out of TDKR loving every single minute it had to offer. It wasn't until I looked on here that I noticed whatever flaws it had to offer (which weren't even that many IMO).

I'm a huge Matrix Trilogy fan myself. Even though the first film is easily the most well-made film of the three, it's still a rich universe and a great story overall. It's also just really cool to have a mythical, hero's journey type of trilogy that's R-rated and ballsy.

Granted, I think the TDK trilogy is every bit as ballsy, and more mature, while still being PG-13. I have to still have a trilogy marathon to see where The Dark Knight trilogy stands overall for me, as a film series. It might very well be my favorite of all time. I know it definitely is my personal favorite and the one I feel most strongly connected to. That's why it's hard for me to rate it more objectively at the moment. I don't know if I'd call it "better" than the original Star Wars trilogy, but the thing is I was born three years after ROTJ came out. I never got to experience waiting in line in 1980, the utter shock of the revelation that Vader was Luke's father. I grew up loving the Star Wars films, but always felt jipped of truly experiencing them. Nolan's trilogy felt like the closest I'd get to that monumental, generation-defining series, just like Star Wars was. And I believe it deserves that reputation and will stand the test of time. Batman was popular before and will always be popular, but this series really made everyone lose their minds for him. It became socially acceptable to pretty much talk about Batman every day, because everyone knew someone who was obsessed.

(Fingers crossed for the new SW trilogy being a new cultural phenomenon though!)

Imo, you can't really mention Indiana Jones now as it's like Lethal Weapon or Die Hard with having more than three films that can't really be separated like Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit or the two Star Wars trilogies.

I'll say TDK Trilogy is my favourite. It's perfect to me, flaws and all...if that makes any sense. Nothing is perfect, NOTHING. When you can live with the imperfections and deal with it and then come to enjoy them over time, that's what i call perfect. And i just connect with all 3 movies like no other trilogy.

I find it hard to classify LOTR or Star Wars or X-Men as trilogies. I guess you would have to divide them up. But even so, the Rings movies and original Star Wars trilogy always had a much weaker film in there. For me anyway.

Same with Godfather 3 or Back To The Future 3. I can't really say i love any full trilogies really..besides Nolans Bat movies. Evil Dead comes close but Army Of Darkness is like a spin-off or different genre all together. They also might make Evil Dead 4 with Bruce Campbell (after the remake). So it may not be a trilogy for long.

We'll see how the Star Trek movies progress. Same with Man Of Steel. The last Kill Bill movie should be out in a few years, so there's that plus Tarantino says Inglourious Basterds/Django Unchained make up 2/3 of a trilogy. So im sure my list could be filled up over the years.

One big dissapointment for me was that the Daniel Craig-James Bond movies weren't made like a trilogy. Starting with Casino Royale to Skyfall to a final film. Too bad! Quantum of Solace was a letdown and there's a couple more lined up. It's cool but it could have been an INSANE trilogy.

I enjoy Star Wars but was it ever called two trilogies before the last 3 ended up being crap? :D Or was it once they were poorly recieved they were viewed as a seperate trilogy?

I personally wouldn't label it a trilogy, nor Indiana Jones. LotR is a trilogy in my view as The Hobbit is a seperate story.

It seems there's at least two camps when it comes to classifying Star Wars; the OT/PT and the Saga camps. I feel there's enough differences to split them, though I don't harbor irrational hatred toward one or the other. I also hope to see Iron-Man, Thor, Webb's Spider-Man and Hellboy on the list.
