yeah........Pa's death would probably be a factor.

but maybe it also has to do with him not using his powers. Perhaps after the "maybe" talk, Clark stops using his powers and hides them. Now, fast forward to college age Clark, and he comes back home to Smallville for a visit. the tornado hits and Clark saves people, but doesn't use his powers. Pa Kent dies, and Clark blames himself for not being able to save him, because he didn't use his powers.......

I agree Pa kent death will be factor but it alone cant be the reason .If he feels guilty about not using his powers to help save his father, then his response wld be to make up for it by using his powers which is the opposite of wht he seems to be doing in the arctic.

I just had a different idea on how it plays out though. It cld be that Clark supersenses tune him to hearing/feeling the suffering of the people around him and after pa kents death it becomes to difficult to handle and so goes into isolation to get away from the cries. He is torn between using his powers to help(which he does once in a while) and his fear of the world not being ready.

It just struck me how light-hearted and comedic this trailer makes the film look, when in truth it was quite a mopey, slowly-paced story.

Just goes to show how misleading trailers are.

I know but that was a great trailer.

I'm sorry, but the John Williams score seems so out of place there, maybe it's just me.

One great thing about that movie though, Kevin Spacey was a great Luthor.

I like the fact that the trailer didn't have more action. The spectacle was still there, but the substance of the story showed that this is going to be deeper than a special effects splurge.

It avoided being 'oh another Superman movie, neat' and instead became 'oh wow I've never seen Superman like this before'.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.......

another question is........what drives him out of exile to go to the FOS and don the suit?

I am hoping that as the movie goes on, as Clark becomes Superman, the colors in the world get brighter. Like a brighter filter to metaphorically show the shift of what the presence of Superman brings to the planet.

It's not just you. This has a strange farce'ness to it. It does come off kind of comical at times. Almost like a SNL-trailer.

This trailer just annoys me.

all that daily planet stuff and the character dialogue...
just makes me wonder if the new production team purposely focused on simply not doing another Returns trailer.

Maybe, to be honest I'm not sure how much Daily Planet stuff there's gonna be in this movie, I really think he won't wear the glasses until the end.

Yeah I think the putting-on-glasses-in-the-elevator scene is close to the end.

since Perry White is in the movie and since we get to know him i think there will be some DP stuff in the second act with Lois Lane. you dont have a close up shot of White running when Zod is trying to destroy Metropolis without introducing DP. the question is when is Clark going into the elevator with the glasses? i think it could be at the end.

Thats easily answered from the movie synopsis.

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent/Kal-El (Henry Cavill) is a young twenty-something journalist who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported years ago to Earth from Krypton, a highly advanced, distant planet, Clark struggles with the ultimate question 'Why am I here?' Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha (Diane Lane) and Jonathan Kent (Kevin Costner), Clark discovers having extraordinary abilities means making difficult decisions. When the world is in dire need of stability, an even greater threat emerges. Clark must become a Man of Steel, to protect the people he loves and shine as the world's beacon of hope - Superman.

Bolded prety much gives it away

Don't get me wrong I don't mean there won't be any I just don't think we'll see Clark there.

Good point. It's what I'd imagined, but never really read it like that in the synopsis. Couldnt see the forest for the trees. Might not be as black and white though.

I just hope the last shot isn't a fly by...even Begins did that and TDK in a way.

If you lot have read Birthright and more particularly or rather absolutely Earth one, I have a feeling that's why Goyer/Nolan have in mind. Clark meeting that planet partly into the story and finding a home there by the end. Glasses et all.

Closing the theme of the nomadic exile finding his place in the world.

This film draws a lot from Birthright, most notably the fake Kryptonian invasion (which in this film happens to be a real one). You can even see a shot in the trailer where something blasts a crater into Metropolis, which resembles the 'S' crater in Birthright.

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
I think that shot of something falling from the sky in the background while someone, probably Clark, is fishing. I think that is the "Fortress" ship or probe where he uses his "key" to activate AI Jor-El. Jor-El tells him who he is and reassures him that it alright to be something more and that leads to Clark donning the Kryptonian garb and becoming Superman. Don't ask me why the ship or probe arrives so long after Clark though. I have no clue. lol

In regards to the motivation for going into exile,
Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
I think it is the opposite of what you folks are thinking. Based on the old descriptions of Clark using his powers during the tornado, I wonder if Clark goes against what his father warned him and that somehow results in Clark blaming himself for Jonathan's death. Guilty over the harm that his abilities caused, Clark goes into exile, lost about what he should do with his life. In terms of story beats, that makes the most sense to me.

*The above is speculation, but I put it in spoiler tags since that seems to be the norm in this thread now for some reason.
