Ben Kingsley is The Mandarin!

Maybe it's a bit early to discuss the possibility of the Mandarin being the villain this time round. I just think it may be a case of 'now or never'. I think with the Ten Rings in IM1 and the interviews with the actor who played that group's leader has implied that they were intending to do the Mandarin at some point. Couple that with IM3 possibly being RDJ's last Iron Man film I think this is the best time to go with the guy many believe to be Iron Man's nemesis.

I just think it would be a real shame if they miss this opportunity. Even if they made the Mandarin a villain in the Avengers sequel it would likely rob Iron Man of a great story between him and the Mandarin, which in his own film would be able to focus more on them than trying to give as much motivation to all the Avengers.

Also, I'm curious to who people would want to play him in the film. I'm torn between either having the Ten Rings leader become the Mandarin which if done right could make for a powerful story or having him return as a henchmen to the Mandarin (played by someone new).

I'm wondering if the SHIELD/secret agency background for Mandarin makes him too similar to Silva from Skyfall.

Re: Ben Kingsley is The Mandarin! - Part 1

I don't think so. He's definitely going to be a completely different type of character than Silva and I doubt anyone will make the connection. The theme of the character will also be played completely different, since the point of Silva being a former M8 agent was to make him a type of parallel to Bond while Mandarin will be an antithesis to Tony.

Re: Ben Kingsley is The Mandarin! - Part 1

Yeah, I don't think Mandarin will be another Silva. I think part of what made Silva in Skyfall was that he was a reflection in part to James Bond. I don't think giving Mandarin an intelligence background could really manage that because it would never be like for like since Silva in part depends on Bond.

Well atleast he's the first villain in the IM films that actually goes by his super villain alias.

Why can't Mandarin have power rings,I don't understand?

I was going to hold judging the power rings until I saw the movie but I personally think it sounded stupid. Who knows though.

I was wondering, which "you will never see me coming" line do you like better? The one from the super bowel spot, or the second theatrical trailer?

I prefer the super bowel version. Quick and easy, yet very powerful. The trailer version sounds too over done. Sounds like it was said by Bane, from the TDKR.

Nothing about that line sounds anything like Bane

it's because of the odd drawl he said it in the 2nd trailer. I can see where people are making that point but I agree it doesn't sound like Bane.. Bane is terrifying yet articulate

which is how Thanos should sound :)

THere is something about Mandarin's voice I like. Since I am such an over analyzer, some of you probably won't agree with this. But I find his voice very ironic, and mocking. Since he uses the media to his advantage and such, I feel that the way he talks, is intentionally fake, even though that's HOW HE SPEAKS. I feel that since he is involved in the media and is an aware terrorist in that sense, I sort of feel that he adopts this voice to sort of fit the image of this evil man. The exaggerated words, and the way he speaks. It's almost as if he KNOWS how to make himself sound like " a super villain". Making it a bit ironic

I love how he says "So run away, hide because nothing can save you". That intonation is just priceless.

Fellow brits, Sir Ben is appearing on the Jonathan Ross show tonight. Being a huge comic nerd I am sure Ross will quiz him about being the Mandarin!

I don't think that will be the case. In fact, probably old news I'm certain, but I'm bringing it up for discussion: it's been said on set that the Mandarin's influence of character is very much inspired by my all time favorite perfromances of Marlon Brando's: Colonel Kurtz from Apocalypse Now.

This makes me even more giddy to see Kingsley. :woot: :hrt:

The interview was just on. It was quite good. Ben is incredibly funny and talented. He showed off a particular love for language and ended his interview with a song (What a wonderful world).

There was also a clip of IM3 and Ben discussed the character. It was a scene on board Air Force one. Basically Mandarin making demands via video link.
