Who should direct Iron man 4?

So apparently Shane Black said he doesn't want to come back for another Iron Man movie which is a shame. So who do you think will be great for a sequel?

There's all the usual names of course, Alex Proyas, Matt Reeves, Duncan Jones etc.

Alot of the talent Marvel is getting now though seems to come from television. Do you know anyone special who works in television who does great science fiction and is maybe not discovered yet?

Not Proyas, I hope. But Reeves and Jones are good choices. I think Reeves may be tied up with the Apes movies if the next one is big and he decides to stay on in the franchise. But Jones seems to be free so I'd go with him. Then again, I'd love for Favreau to come back as well.

I was just going to say, the last interview I saw with him, he seemed to indicate that he wouldn't mind coming back, but doesn't think Marvel will ask him.

Yeah, I'll be plenty happy if Black doesn't come back. Last thing I need to see is a director who has contempt for his audience.

Re: Who should direct Iron man 4?

I want Shane Black to come back, even without Downey. I know some fans are upset about the Mandarin, but Black is a blossoming director who gets the character of Stark and his relationships with Pepper and Rhodey. Downey gave his best performance as Stark in IM3, and I'm sure Black had a great hand in that. IM3 was a solid film and much better than IM2, and while not as good as the first, probably had the smartest script in the trilogy. I don't want Faveau back at all; he would regress the franchise. All of his films have been average to decent, leading me to believe that IM1 was a flash in the pan for him.

Shane Black is a much better filmmaker than Favreau IMO. With Black back you get a great writing and directing talent. If he doesn't get asked back I think guy Ritchie would be a great fit.

Re: Who should direct Iron man 4?

Eh, to each their own. Even setting aside the fact that I think Black is a colossal douche-bag for mocking longtime fans just for having a legit gripe about his ideas regarding this property, I think Black is a really repetitive director/writer. That **** gets old fast. I'm not in love with his dialog either. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't. The humor in IM3 was the least effective in the franchise. I can't remember a single funny/clever line. I can quote the first two films and Avengers all day. It's yet another reason I rank IM3 at the bottom. Favreau on the other hand keeps it fresh with the use of the improv. With Black it's like knowing his bag of tricks ahead of time(Christmas, buddy buddy-isms, kidnappings, etc.) which kinda kills the freshness. Not to mention he doesn't have Favreau's comic book fan attention to detail regarding this mythology(Whedon by contrast, is very much alike with Favreau in this regard) and knowing what to emphasize and what not to. That's why in IM3 we get all of Tony's suits seemingly being made out of tinfoil. A comic geek would have caught that and addressed it as inconsistent with all 3 prior films. To Black though I doubt it was all that important. He had bigger fish to fry. He had a quasi-political message to shove in there. Favreau and Whedon as comic book fans understood that the powers and gadgets and stuff aren't just backround despensible stuff. They are very character specific attributes just as much as all the non-physical characteristics are.

Re: Who should direct Iron man 4?

Yeah that sucks that the film didn't live up to your expectations, especially since I remember having a conversation with you about the Mandarin where you actually had an investment in the character (I can't stand non-IM readers who wiki The Mandarin and decide to hate the movie adaption). I liked it on my first viewings, and it keeps getting better and better upon subsequent viewings. It's a solid 7.5/10 for me, and I'm a picky grader- my highest MCU grades are Avengers at 8.5 and Iron Man/Thor at 8/10. I'm pretty sure your misinformed about Black not being a comics fan. I know he at least said he was a Marvelite and a fan of Shell-head when he was a child, but I don't know if he isn't anymore or if it was all lip service.

I think you'll get your wish of having Black exit the franchise. Hell, if I was him I'd bolt to if I had a small minority of VERY vocal Iron"nerds" bastardizing me on the internet. Even though you were upset with some of the story decisions he went with, I think Shane Black would be a great option to adapt a 'spy' thriller IM movie with Justin Hammer internally sabotaging Stark Industries with Masque, Taskmaster, or Ghost. That would be more of his forte anyways. The dude nailed the characterizations of Tony and Pepper, and Rhodey was an improvement in everyway from IM2.

Guy Ritchie seems destined to helm a MCU franchise. Marvel likes to go after he talented directors with a few, but not to many, hits to see what they can do when they play around with a big budget. I don't know if his style fits well with Cap or Thor but I think he would be a great fit for this franchise. He's my number one choice outside of Black.

As to whether he's a fan or not, that's just the vibe I picked up on and for the reasons I said so. I DO know that both Favreau and Whedon definitely are. I could be wrong with regards to Black,.....................but I doubt it. ;)

Re: Who should direct Iron man 4?

For the most part, I liked Black's take on the franchise, but I'm apprehensive about him returning because I'd rather not endure another awful epilogue. This has been happening a lot lately in the genre too, with MoS, TDKR, and TASM being the other recent offenders.

I would default to Favreau giving it another go, but I feel like he's done everything he set out to do with the character. Barring those two, I'd throw either Curtis Hanson, Guy Ritchie, or Sam Mendes' names in a hat.

I thought there wasn't going to be any more Iron Man movies? If there was then, please no Shane Black. He made Iron Man 3=The Phantom Menace.

Well, I think it's safe to assume that there won't be anymore for a while when you consider RDJ's contract(Avengers sequels, no mention of solo films).

I'm sure that they'll eventually turn out another one, but at this point, I'm not expecting it for up to a decade, and definitely with a new actor. Feige has gone on record that MS will go the Bond route with their characters.

I'm sorry but that's an awful comparison. If you hated IM3 than a better comparison would be X3, since its a third installment with a new director. Phantom Menace is a lackluster film made years after successful franchise films. Compare that film to Prometheus, Terminator Salvation, or Indiana Jones 4.

Subjectively, IM3 is a solid film. If Black returned for a sequel, the story elements some fans didn't like such as Mandarin, Tony Stark is Iron Man without the suit, suits are easily breakable unless a hero pilots them, wouldn't be in an IM4. The film would have different motifs, and if Black played to his strengths and introduced an espionage plot with Masque, Ghost, or Taskmaster, I think the film would be fantastic. Don't blindly hate on the guy because his take on certain elements differed from your own. For all we know, Drew Pearce might have come up with most of the story elements you didn't like. Black is a great filmmaker whose 2-for-2 since rejuvenating his career as a director.

Go Black or go home! Definitely! I want Shane Black back!
His involvement (and the fact that they didn't castrate his vision, as they have done in the past to accomodate their.... :whatever: "Cinematic Universe") is the best thing that happened to Marvel Studios creatively since Jon Favreau's first Iron Man (well, at least, for my tastes).

I'm at about the point where I have no interest in seeing Shane Black direct anything ever again. I don't need to give my money to a guy who likes to spit on me. It's like he's campaigning to be Ang Lee jr.

Rehashing your older movie plots, plot devices and settings is now considered a "vision" ? Jeez even the secondary villain Eric Savin, who looks nothing like his comic book counterpart is basicaly Joshua from Lethal Weapon.

-JKR- 07-11-2013 05:07 AM

Re: Who should direct Iron man 4?

Savin IS basically Mr. Joshua. And there are recurring elements in Shane Black's works, like the hero being held captured, and having to escape. But other than that, you can't say the script for "Iron Man 3" is a REHASH of his earlier works, or you are either being delusional or unfair (still butthurt about the Mandarin twist, the movie not serving as a teaser trailer for future Marvel flicks, etc.?)! ;)

Yeah, that's your problem. Because he isn't spitting on anyone. He's just not to keen on having a bunch of fanboys touch themselves - and I can do without that.

Anyway, I'm outta here. I see the same wind's still blowing. Nag, nag, nag.

Fincher for iron Man 4. That sounds dumb, but here me out; with 4 they will most likely have a new actor, and with that new guy should come a new tone and feel for the films, thematically and aesthetically. Who comes to mind as someone who will radically distinguish the old from the new films? yes, Fincher. His moody, stylish aesthetic would lend a bold new hand in charting the next course for cinematic Iron Man.

Fincher has turned from an indie wonder to a hollywood scrap receiver, he might aswell do Iron Man 4.

Fincher's a good choice for almost anything. However, I think he'd be an even better fit on a Hulk movie.
