Your Biggest Superhero Movie Pet Peeves

Pretty self-explanatory, what are your superhero movie pet peeves? (any topics related to superhero movies including critics and fanboys)

My biggest pet peeve is how all the fanboys complain because the movie "isn't like the comic book". Why do you want it to be exactly like the comics? If you read the comic, wouldn't you already know how the story played out? Insert Ben Kingsley's Mandarin I personally want the movie to be (somewhat) free from the comics. I'm not saying they should be nothing like the comics, I just hate how people complain about a twist Again, Ben Kingsley's Mandarin.

Getting basic characterization wrong. You can play around with the little details and such but when you fundamentally alter an established character then you've gone too far. If you don't think a character will work then use another one that will instead of changing the character beyond recognition to make them fit what you want to do. Or make up a brand new character to fit your film. Of course this is a layered thing. Main heroes and villains should be faithfully adapted. Lesser supporting characters have more leeway.

My biggest pet peeve when it comes to CBMs? When a director makes an uninspiring CBM. Lately, we've seen this on both Marvel and DC's side.

Using the government as the antagonist. It largely harkens to threadbare 90s cliches, and x-angst.

The origin movie formula.

When the villain who is generally some kind of interesting larger than life becomes "A dude in a businnes suit" or some such ton ing down. You know, like when supposedly Shredder was going to be General Shraeder in the next TMNT movie. I know the costumes are sometimes too goofy/expensive, but if you say Blackheart is in this movie...it better not be some punkass guy.

1. Everyone ripping off the STM Origin Story approach...even the Superman films themselves are doing this.

2. Everyone wanting DC to rip off the MCU

When the women are given nothing to do that matters in the actual story and are simply relegated to being "the love interest."

Iron Man 3 spoilers ahead, so don't read if you don't want to be spoiled:

Spoiler!!! Click to Read!:
The idea is at its worst with the all three Iron Man films. Obadiah Stane, Justin Hammer, Aldrich Killian...we could have had a film where that idea isn't used in any of those films. One could say Vanko was the main villain, but Vanko wouldn't have had the tools to become that threat at the end of IM2 if it wasn't for Hammer in the first place. And then it just became worse by the third film with Killian being the main villain and he's just another "business suit" kind of guy.

I hope you're on the same boat of wishing there wouldn't be a DC cinematic universe as well, because there is plenty of room

Agree with this as well. I really hope Lois Lane ends up being another proactive love interest as we've seen as of late with the likes of Gwen Stacy in TAS-M.

Not being to able to reach the #4 movie in the series.

Having a masked character continually unmasked for the sake of showing the actor's face as often as possible.

Race changes.(somebody had to say it.)

Reboots after a moderately good movie.(I.E TASM)

This.

Tunnel vision; grounding a film for the sake of grounding it and not looking at the possible character development that comes from exploring something a bit more fantastic. Anno might know what I'm talking about. ;)

Also, not having a clue about the tone you want (grounded versus full-on fantastic; looking at you, Dragonball: Evolution).

Thank you...nothing really to add, you summed it up perfectly.

Re: Your Biggest Superhero Movie Pet Peeves

-Blandness
-Lame comic book characters from comic books being injected into the movie
-Heroes and villains powers being turned down notches
-Lame appearances of heroes and villains
-A lack of faithfulness to the source material
-Too much comedy
-Boring stuff taking over the movie when there is no action going on
-Main protagonist being really lame
-Too little action
-Poorly put together action
-Bad CGI
-The hero spending too little time in their comic book gear
-Poor humor
-Awful music
-Kiddy sound effects that were specifically designed for the purpose of catering to little kids

Using the archenemy in the first film and having him killed off.

I certainly hate killing off the Super Villains. In some cases I can understand it,like GG in Spider-Man,since it's done like in the comic. But in the other 99% of the time,it's disappointing.

Don't get me wrong...I wouldn't mind a crossover film where various stars of DC films team up and save the world.

But the last thing I want to see is Hal popping up in a Batman movie. Or Amanda Waller showing up at the Daily Planet just to set up a JLA movie.

Keep the solo films as self contained as possible.

Re: Your Biggest Superhero Movie Pet Peeves

I feel the only Superhero movie that didn't need an origin was The Amazing Spiderman. I don't get what's your problem with origin stories with the exception of Spiderman in which i can understand it was redundant and totally unnecessary. In Batman Begins i feel what makes the movie so good and different i the fact that the Origin story and the hero not wearing the costume is a big part of the movie. In Iron Man you needed it and it wasn't boring and in Man of Steel obviously we are getting a different take on Superman's origins and im sure its good to have an origin for Sups for the newer audience. Yes everyone knows who Sups is but not everyone knows his story pre-tights.

Anyway. On Topic

Damsel in Distress is really stale and just now right.
Race changes i agree although i don't mind some (like Perry White played by Fishburne or Ras Al Ghoul being Asian and American instead of Arab)

and most importantly Studios making the movies and Studios putting people who don't care enough for the Comics in charge of the production or direction (Martin Campbell for GL)(Tim Burton for Batman Returns)(Joel Schumacher for BF and B&R) of them and Studios making unnecessary sequels/remakes due to popularity (Iron Man 2, TASM)

The first one rarely works (Bryan Singer doing Xmen) most of the times talented people fail(Singer again) because they create their own thing in their minds which may seem cool to them but its not cool for the character, for the GA and for the fans.

Using the same actors who starred in previous comic book movies as other characters.

For instance Chris Evans played the Human Torch and Captain America.
Ryan Reynolds played Deadpool and Green Lantern.
Halle Berry played Storm and Catwoman.

I don't mind those, it's fine for the most part
Mandarin means Chinese General, the idea of having an Indian guy plays his role was a weird choice since the trailer (I did not follow the announcements)
One weird thing in my view of it, Kingpin being portrayed by a black man did not compute for the longest time, but I never had a problem with brown Harvey Dent in the first Batman movie

Before Deadpool, RR even played a character in Blade Trinity, it doesn't bother me honestly, I think it's rather fun

Cameron Diaz played the crush of Stanley Ipkiss and the Secretary of the Green Hornet
Nicholas Cage portrayed Ghost Rider and Big Daddy
Jim Carrey will be playing a third character in a third comic to movie franchise in Kick-Ass 2
Tommy Lee Jones played 2-Face and Agent K
The guy who played Gavin in Joss Wehdon's 'Angel' played minor roles in both the 2k3 Hulk and Spider-Man 2
Kirsten Dunst played MJ in Raimi's Spider-Man and a character in the third Crow movie

When they make a "strong" female character.

Meaning all she does is kick ass and look hot. The flipside is the damsel in distress.

Re: Your Biggest Superhero Movie Pet Peeves

Two types of fanboys..

-The ones who act like experts and keep saying how certain characters are suppose to look like&act and their movie universes suppose to be like..Yet have never read a comic book(the source material)in their life or don't like to read them and are basing from films/games&cartoons.

-The blind loyalist suck-ups who act like their favorite super-hero films and anything coming out related to the characters are the best and can do no wrong while everything else fails or will fail,Then they feel to argue with others about their characters being the top #1 best like kids claiming their toys are the best.

Both are extremely childish/f'n posers and only half-way true fans..IMO!

Films that are slavishly devoted to source material to the point that it becomes a detriment.
