Likely Deductions About Who'll Be Cast as the Next Batman

So with today’s ComicCon announcement about the dark knight appearing along side the man of steel in the next big DC film, I've seen a lot of people elsewhere going epic crazy fan-casting who they want to don the cape and cowl.

A lot of that fan-casting though is, frankly, way off the mark and unlikely to happen. Because everyone and their mother seems to be making a few big mistakes. Like choosing an established name. Or casting way too old.

People like Jon Hamm or Ryan Gosling.

You want to know who’ll be the next caped crusader? Think younger, think unknown or barely known. Think Henry Cavill a year ago, think Christian Bale in 2004, think Tobey Maguire in 2000.

Also, think non-American born.

The next hero of the night is going to be someone between approximately 25 and 30, with maybe a few years lee-way on either end. He’s going to be someone with some experience under his belt, but not enough that people really know his name. And he’s not going to have been born in the US of A. How do I know this?

They’ve said before - I think it was Snyder and/or Goyer in an interview right after the film came out - that Man of Steel is the beginning of the new DC cinematic collective universe, and that Superman’s arrival on the scene is what inspires others to take on the mantle of being heroes. So take any thoughts of Batman being older, wiser, established, and throw them out the window. This Batman is going to be new to the scene and new to the job. Likewise, they won’t want either hero making the other look too old or too young. They’ll want them on even footing with each other.

At the same time they don’t want to upstage their new crown prince Superman. If they pick a “name" like Hamm or Gosling, it makes Cavill second-string. Because even with “Man of Steel" under his belt, he still doesn’t yet have that kind of instant recognition.

As for why the new guy will not be born in the US of A?

It’s a trend I’ve noticed.

The vast majority of superheroes aren’t played American born actors anymore. Likely because someone, somewhere, tested audiences and found that international audiences respond poorly to Americans playing heroes, but are more favorable to European or Australian’s playing them. Think about it. Wolverine, Batman, Superman, Thor, Spider-Man… all UK or Aussie. Sure, there are still some Americans playing heroes. RDJr's Iron Man, Captain America, whoever plays Hulk. But the trend has been going more and more towards non-American actors for these big tent-poles, and I doubt it'll change.

So… IMHO, what can can say about the next actor to play the Bat is...

  • 25-30 years old
  • Likely not American born
  • Not a ‘name’ celebrity

Honestly.....I think it's going to be Bradley Cooper. Now what you're looking for at all, OP, but I think it's him. He was rumored for The Flash. He's a big name, but he's also a respected actor. I think he's also a kind of left field choice. Kind of inspired. I think he has the chops to do the brooding and the darkness. I would actually like it!

there's a laundry list of guys zack has worked with from fassbender to oscar isaac. oscar has the chops but i wouldn't say he's got those classic good looks that you would imagine bruce having, though he's got a fantastic jawline and fassbender's pretty tied up at the moment. he's also worked with jon hamm, billy crudup, mathew goode, patrick wilson and jeffrey dean morgan. the youngest out of all of those are goode and oscar isaac. i'd say it could be either one of them. or not.

I hope its Joe Manganiello. He was almost cast as Superman so I think he has a good chance of being cast.

Snyder's worked with Matthew Goode, he wouldn't be bad, and Michael Fassbender, who would be amazing but he's already Magneto.

I think Joel Kinnaman, Liam McIntyre, Ryan Gosling, and Jack Huston may be considered

Do you find that everyone else dwarfs RDJ, who's 5'8?

the difference is there are other characters in avengers to take your eye off the fact that he's pretty small. this is batman vs superman. camera angles and a pair of air rdj's aside, it would look awkward especially when it isn't just about height. he's just a bigger guy period.

bane is supposed to be much bigger then batman but that wasn't the bane we got. in some fight scenes they were about the same size and at times hardy looked his height in comparison to bale.

can you really envision a scene in a batman vs superman movie where mags wouldn't look much bigger then henry?

No to Joe Manganiello, Bradley Cooper, Matthew Goode and Armie Hammer.

My choices are -

Luke Evans, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Fassbender and James Mardsen.

Snyder quoted The Dark Knight Returns so that makes me think of two things : Batman vs Superman scenario and an older Batman. Maybe its a sequel to the Justice League movie and it plays a TDKReturns scenario.

For an older Batman my pick is Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Re: Likely Deductions About Who'll Be Cast as the Next Batman

because it will be inspired in part by returns doesn't mean that it will be a direct adaptation. we shouldn't expect him to be an older bruce. he exists in the universe, in the shadows. so he's probably around cavill's age. maybe a year 2 bats, still a legend.

Maybe the quote from TDKR means we're secretly getting Bale back from retirement.

A guy can dream.

If he goes toe to toe with Superman , i think we should see a older Batman instead of a young one. Not 60 or anything. But at least 40. He has to be extremely experienced.

I do not understand the Luke Evans suggestion.

Nicolas Cage

He ends up finding a superman suit in the ship and dresses it. A superman/batman combo

Is Joseph Gordon Levitt still being considered for Batman ?

To tie up with Nolan's previous Bat trilogy ?

Nope. It's a new Batman, new universe, Bruce Wayne.

Thank God.

As much as i love Nolan's bat trilogy, it's time for a new take on the character.

Re: Likely Deductions About Who'll Be Cast as the Next Batman

I don't think they'll go younger than Cavill, personally, but there are some relatively non-mainstream actors out there who would fit the bill of being older than Cavill (not significantly older, but still older, say between 4 and 6 years older) but not especially well-known:
Gael Garcia Bernal
Selwyn Ward
Robbie Jones III

You've also got actors whose names people would recognize but who aren't 'A-listers' and won't upstage Cavill, people like Sam Witwer and Milo Ventimiglia.

If they do go younger than Cavill, you've got some good actors who fit the bill such as Sinqua Walls and the now-unemployed Colin Donnell.

Also, just because Batman is 'new to the scene' doesn't mean he has to be younger than or even the same age as Clark.

I'm stunned no one has suggested Nikolaj Coster-Waldau:

Ser Jamie could definitely be Batman

I want JGL to play Batman, but as Bruce Wayne.

Itll be Val Kilmer.

Jokes aside. I would be excited if Armie Hammer got it. He had the look, body, and voice to be Wayne and Batman

Man...why couldn't it be a 40 year old plus, so many good choices from that age group. Jaimie lannister is perfect for it.
