Rumor: Nolan-verse Gotham Police-based Series in the Works?

Rumor going around which I'm giving a few grains of salt of WB television looking to hire a writer (for what I'm guessing is a spec-script for a pilot at this stage?) for a "Gotham Central" type TV show set in the Nolan-verse, between TDK and TDKR, during the 8 years of Batman's retirement. Apparently, Jonathan Nolan is supposed to be involved in some capacity with it. Said show would focus on the GCPD in those years.

It's certainly curious/interesting... but it's also liable to be confusing, if you ask me.

That said, since it says they're looking to hire a writer, what my instincts tell me is that they're not even at pilot stage for this. Just idea stage, looking to hire the writer for the pilot.

I wouldn't mind the idea. It'll be confusing for some of the people who will be watching Superman and Batman together on the big screen in 2015 since that will be a different Batman than Nolan's/Bale's.

But aside from that, I don't mind them going for it. I can see why someone wouldn't be for it since the Nolanverse is pretty much over, but I see it as just the Batman arc being over. Eight years between TDK and TDKR is untapped potential.

not sure how reliable batman-on-film's sources are, but:
"I can tell you all unequivocally that there is NO plans for a Batman/Gotham PD television show that is set in the Nolanverse between THE DARK KNIGHT and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and show-run by Jonathan Nolan. That rumor is 100% false and you can take it to the bank. How do I know for sure? Because I asked the folks who would know and/or be involved and they told me "BS"."

damn.

EXCLUSIVE: In one of the biggest drama deals this season, after a bidding war, Fox has landed Gotham, from Warner Bros. TV and The Mentalist creator Bruno Heller, with a series commitment. For Gotham, Warner Bros TV is mining one of DC Comics‘ most popular character universes, Batman. It explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham famous. In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Police Department and is yet to meet Batman who will not be part of the series.

No word yet on continuity with the new post-Nolan movies or the Nolan movies.

Wow! That's great news. Or is it bad? :hehe:

Im assuming it's going to be presented as a loose continuity for any universe. One that could fit into any & every interpretation. Snyder/Affleck's, Nolan's, Burton's, whoever.

I think it could work well to see a few villains become who they are, especially if it's some of the older ones. People who are older than Bruce like Oswald Cobblepot or Arnold Wesker. The Calendar Man. That would be neat.

Unlike Smallville, this can definitely work. :hrt:

The key is that if you're ignoring Batman, you have to ignore Joker, Catwoman, and Two-Face. Don't get cocky and re-write comic book history like Smallville did.

The biggest villain names you could PROBABLY get away with are The Riddler and The Penguin. Other than them, stick to:

Mr. Zsasz
The Ventriloquist
Rupert Thorne
Black Mask
Calendar Man
Mad Hatter
Zatanna
Poison Ivy
Killer Croc (if realism is loosened up)
Clayface (if realism is loosened up)
Man-Bat (if realism is loosened up)

^ Villains you'll NEVER see in a motion picture. Give these guys the spotlight they deserve.

I'm VERY excited for this. :wow:

There could also be some very clever and mouth-watering ideas.

- The series finale episode could actually show Gordon meeting Batman on the GCPD rooftop, or Gordon shining the Bat Signal in the sky.

- You can actually see a young Bruce witnessing his parents' murders, and Gordon being assigned to the case. You could see a 10-year-old Bruce.

- Gordon having an affair with Sarah Essen.

- Barbara Gordon being born.

- Gordon taking his pregnant wife to see "some new Flying Graysons" act that just premiered at the Gotham Circus.

I mean, the possibilities are endless. I actually think not having Batman is a terrific and bold idea.

Crossing my fingers to see the Joker as either Redhood or Jack Napier. It would be really cool to see the show explore a pre-Joker in several episodes.

You know what will be very interesting to see?..

Seeing Jim & Barbara Gordon happy and who comes to GCPD? Miss. Sarah Essen!

I'm so pumped for this! I never watch tv shows & this could honestly be the first show since BTAS I watch religiously!

Bruce was a boy when Gordon was already a Lt. in the department. I'm sure when he got into Police work, Bruce was probably only an infant.

Wouldn't mind seeing Bruce's parents as part of the show though in a nod to the Wayne family.

A James Gordon origin story? Meh.
It's like watching an origin story for Uncle Ben.

Except Jim Gordon is a major supporting character in Batman, while Uncle Ben dies before Peter even becomes a hero.

I am interested if it is set in the DC Cinematic Universe.

C_Carmichael 09-25-2013 06:25 PM

Re: Rumor: Nolan-verse Gotham Police-based Series in the Works?

I'd be interested if this is based on the Nolan-Batverse. And only if we have the familiar faces of Oldman, Ron Dean (Wuertz), Monique Curnan (Rameriez), Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent (during his stint at IA), Colin McFarlane (Loeb) and Mark Boone (Flass).

I could see it being set in the 7 year disappearance of Bruce Wayne, with the Falcone Crime Family being a major set piece, and exploring the spread of corruption that created the Gotham which needed Batman.

Additionally, you could toss in some League of Shadows action, as we get the full story on their attempt to take down Gotham.

But...

If they went the route of "Smallville" and tried to give us a pocket universe with teen Bruce Wayne discovering his talents ala Clark Kent in "Smallville", I would not be interested.

"Smallville" worked, because the setting was plausible, and the story made sense, at least for a while. Doing a similar thing with Batman, just doesn't work and would be just more Batman tossed into a overfull swiming pool full of Batman.

Re: Rumor: Nolan-verse Gotham Police-based Series in the Works?

To me the idea sounds like a good idea but once you think about what makes Gordon's character interesting it always comes back to Batman and his rogues and I personally don't care to see full on or watered down rogues in a series without Batman.

Sounds like just another crime/cop show with Gotham and Gordon in it just for rating purposes.

This sounds pretty cool. You could make a season(s) long story line about somebody like the Penguin. Batman don't need to be there for that ****. :o

Re: Rumor: Nolan-verse Gotham Police-based Series in the Works?

Batman villains without Batman? No, thanks.
The Nolanverse is finished, leave it alone.

What I'd like to see is a TV series wit the reboot's universe showing the early years of Bats and Gordon, maybe told from Gordon's perspective.

Re: Rumor: Nolan-verse Gotham Police-based Series in the Works?

I am open to the idea of the show, as long as Nolan's continuity is left alone. I mean, if Jonathan Nolan was directly involved, I would be fine, but it would be awkward having two conflicting continuities for the Bat franchise, especially since they are trying to build up the DC Universe.
