Not typically. Usually I refer to the books, shows and movies themselves, and I point out that when Superman flourished was when he was more impressive and more along the lines of how Siegel saw him.

I think he should be able to time-travel but not be able to change the past. The 1978 movie had very few similarities to the comics of the time, and a huge rule in the Superman comics was that the past could not be changed-and Superman had tried to do so more than once. If the past was changed at all then that formed an alternate reality, and the regular timeline stayed as it was.
