The landscape statement applies to "why they themselves
hadn't seen the ship before that moment" as in the historically native scientists. That doesn't really present any logic as to why the immediate search and rescue military parties were so inept when it happened live.
Their rules being they are skilled at what they do, yet they couldn't do such a thing when it was possible.
I think the cube thing was a valiant attempt. However they probably would have had more luck using practical methods.
