I mean I'd be more inclined to think that the staff means Gambit worked with the Avengers in some way...
I mean, even if Cap bests him, why take it? It's just a staff. Nothing special. Coulda upgraded any old staff.
Maybe Gambit ultimately sides with Wolverine (who appears to have chosen the Avengers)?
