I'm thinking that one way to get round Coulson's death in the Avengers is to adopt the Baywatch solution:

Sweep it under the carpet and conveniently ignore the fact that he was killed off, offering no explanation whatsoever, but letting viewers come to their own realisation while watching it of "hey, didn't that character die before?"
