I disagree, If Bats had said he was Bruce Wayne or unmasked then I'd agree it was executed ham-handed. But that wasn't the case. He revealed his identity in a similar manner like he had previously to Rachel in "Batman Begins" "It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me."
only this time he reveals to Gordon that his simple act of placing his father's coat around him as a boy was an inspiration to him and he consider Gordon to be even more of a hero than himself.
