Max Allan Collins, when he wrote Wild Dog, stated that he followed in the tradition of masked or costumed adventurers such as Zorro, the Shadow, the Green Hornet and the Lone Ranger. If you listen to the Green Hornet radio show, he mostly tackled mundane crimes. In the pulps the Shadow could not cloud men's minds. (The Spider never had metahuman powers, but his adventures stood as rather peculiar.) Of course, Collins carefully distinguishes between the concepts of costumed or masked hero and metahuman hero.
