Beyond his theatrical persona, and terrifying antics, his goal and agendas with trying to push people over the line made for nightmarish viewing. He delighted in seeing people crack. Whereas Bane/Ra's/Talia are more like like real-world extremists, Joker is a total psychological terrorist. All of them have views about humanity in general, but Joker's approach is far more intimate. He takes pure delight in the corruption of the individual, which is indeed terrifying. Once he sets his sights on someone, they pretty much have no chance. They're either going to die or lose their minds. Generally speaking of course.
