I suppose you're both right. Though I don't think that diminishes the burden in the less immediate examples.
Moreover, if one were to approach the god analogy, there is a certain lack of interference seen from higher beings that no one seems to question.
Rather, it's comparable to people with cameras documenting the animal kingdom and all it's tragic acts. When's the last time someone was frowned upon for not helping a dying ape.

For me, Jon's character has never really hinged upon him being selfless. The idea of a good protective and stern father can me adapted in several ways. Jeph Loeb has his ways, there are others.
