The writers didn't need to 'improve' on Rogue's character by making her the 'everyman' in order for her to work in that role; all they needed to do was write the character in that role effectively, and they more than did so. It isn't the fault of the writers that people apparently wanted something completely different than what we were given and therefore complained about the writers telling the story they wanted to tell and not limiting themselves to choices based on the whims of fans.
Well, hopefully we will have seen the last of "everyman" Rogue, and we'll see a Rogue that doesn't make me want to
