Despite the many things I like to believe happened in the trilogy, I understand why it was made the way it was.

the beginning - origin, Ra's as first villain, theme of fear
Batman defeats indifference and corruption
the middle - climax, Joker as most integral villain, theme of chaos
Batman defeats organized crime and psychopathy
the end - conclusion, Bane as final villain, theme of pain
Batman defeats extortion and terrorism

I like to believe many things happen behind the scenes of the films and in between the films themselves, but in showing us a trilogy of The Dark Knight's story. I think Nolan did things exactly the way he should have.
