If he gets zapped to smouldering bones in the future, then he won't be the traveller. Maybe Rogue and Kitty go back and have to find the 1970s version? He would have just returned from Vietnam, as the US involvement in that war ended in 1973.

I just spotted that 1973 also saw (according to Wikipedia entry on robotics) the "first industrial robot with six electromechanically driven axes." Axes meaning plural of axis, not axe. In other words, able to reach its arm into different points rather than just swinging from side to side (two axes). Maybe the date has something to do with the development of the first Sentinel too?
