Well, there were no interviews with Vaughn himself. This wikipedia article however credits him, Jane Goldman and Kinberg with writing:

There's also this interview with Kinberg where he specifically mentions working closely on the script with Goldman and Vaughn, and calls the movie more "mythic and epic":

And as far as I know he's still attached as the producer for the film, which I don't think would have been the case if he just absolutely hated the direction it was taking.
So I think it's entirely possible that Vaughn was also not interested in a straight sequel to First Class and had a bigger ambition.
