I just think they're moving them away from some other big name films. In May, there's Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which may be why CA: TWS is releasing before them. Late June has Transformers 4 and mid-July has X-Men: Days of Future Past so I'm thinking that's why Guardians of the Galaxy is dropping in August.
I'd be willing to bet it has more to do with Disney's release schedule than with yielding to the "competition."
In 2014, Disney's got the choice-cut real estate for May/Memorial Day with The Good Dinosaur; Maleficent
for 4th of July weekend; and Tomorrowland
for Christmas holiday. There's similar situations in Disney/Pixar's lineups vs. Marvel Studios' lineups in 2013 and 2015. Disney movies are higher in the pecking order than Marvel movies.
