I think the substance is there more than for which people are giving the film credit. Like moviedoors points out, it simply doesn't engage in the discussion it's trying to start. It's one of the things that was most disappointing for me, though I still stand by my 9/10 rating. This just won't make my all-time favs, which is a shame because Top Gun and Blade Runner are my numbers 1 and 2 (respectively). It'll probably end up in my top 10 with time, but I'll need to give it a decade to age before I get to that point.
