My feeling on the inevitable comparisons...
The Williams theme is the proto-superhero theme. Which makes sense, because Superman is the proto-superhero.
But I feel Zimmer's score will be a fitting companion for the more modern conceptions of Superman. What I'm hearing so far has this blend of alienness, power and majesty. Those drums sound like they belong to the most powerful being on Earth. It's not enough to only give him a heroic theme. Superheroes are commonplace to today's audience. This movie is attempting to show people why Superman still matters. The music needs to make us feel awe-inspired by his power...both in terms of sheer might, and his potential to inspire hope. So far I think it's on the right track.
