Something like rubber or sculpted leather is probably inevitable in the cowl. That doesn't mean it has to be used throughout the suit, however.
I really think he needs a cgi cowl. that way he can have the big muscular thick neck muscles but he would still be able to turn head and it look and move like a real neck. don't make it look skinny like it's made of several parts. it should look like one piece.
