I feel like Nolan was trying to overly humanize Bruce Wayne way beyond what anyone else has done to the character in any other film. That's either a good thing or a bad one depending on who you ask. For me it didn't work because I just don't connect to the Bruce Wayne character like I do Peter Parker for instance.
It made me think of Skyfall. James Bond gets the chance to disappear, but soon afterwards he feels uncomfortable, he misses the emotion, the excitement.
I feel Batman like Hamlet, or any tragic figure. He either dies or gets an heir to his mission.
