Yeah, I saw Menace the whole way through for the first time in a long time the other day and I realised that if you just cut out about 5-10 mins of footage that is too overtly slapstick it's actually a good film. It's really Clones that lets down the trilogy, in that Lucas, to his own admission, couldn't write a love story.
Phantom Menace was the only one Lucas was actually trying on. By the book he did a lot of things right, however having watched a lot of the edit's that try to cut down on the slap stick, you realize the momentum just drops dead once they reach Tattooine. Maul is chasing them yes, but he's shown to be VERY far behind them, and we don't see anything bad happening on Naboo so the tension just dies and the film becomes boring.
However I do agree with you that Attack of the Clones was by far the worst film in the trilogy as well as one of the worst films of the decade imo.
