Going by what we saw of them in the last trailer, it seems they're having Logan struggling with guilt after having to kill Jean in X3. Considering that he has to kill Mariko in a similar way, I'm guessing it brings Logan to a point where he understands that what he gave them was mercy. If that's the case, I kind of like the idea of them possibly bridging those two scenes instead of just repeating something he already did in an earlier movie without a reference to it.
We know the part from the comics with the bear is in the movie, so it sounds like that theme fits in with all of that.
