Yeah, and he definitely added something to the movie a lesser director wouldnt have. The focus on character was one, but the movie looking stunning and good use of CGI was another. I have seen a few of his movies and they always tend to look very good. 3:10 To Yuma especially.

The thing is that Mangold's work, his input, influence and 'vision', were obvious. It didn't feel like the studio interfered or rode roughshod over his concept. Some parts of the film (Viper) feel like someone else's ideas because they are tonally not quite the same.
But at least Mangold made 'his' film. It didn't feel that way with Origins, where Gavin Hood was out of his depth and lacked the forcefulness to make something in accordance with his vision. It's a shame he wasn't able to stand up for himself a bit more, or that the studio/Rothman trampled all over him.
In fairness to Hood I think Mangold would have had a little more pull with the studio anyway, as he has done quite a few films were as Origins was only Hoods 2nd. Plus Mangold didnt have to deal with Rothman, or at least as much as Hood had too.
I do think Hood could have given us a good film without any of the meddling.
