It still wouldnít make things any better if Superman were forced to kill his own son. Itís one thing if itís General Zod, an actual villain, but another thing if itís his own son. The relationship between Superman and Lois was already on the rocks due to his sudden 5 year absence and her engagement to Richard White, but things would have been beyond repairable between them if Superman had to take the life of their own child, regardless on how old he was.
That, and the fact that Superman, as a character, just wasnít well established in ďSRĒ. And for all the problems that MOS had, at least it was an entertaining film, which is something that I canít say about SR in general.
