There was nothing wrong with the March marketing start date for The Wolverine. Iron Man 3 didn't start hardcore marketing until late January early February around the Superbowl and that movie came out right at the beginning of May.
It's not about the start date for marketing, it's all about the tactics and how you execute the marketing strategy. A longer marketing window does not lead to more consumers buying your product it only opens the chance for people getting tired of hearing about you.
While not advisable they could have waited until mid May to June to start promoting it if they had an amazing marketing campaign for the movie.
