It's nonsensical to say that you think that they thought that, even if they didn't. I would find your argument more logical if you said that you think their inclusion of humor affected their chances of building further on the story.
It's an "It's like..." feeling, that's what I mean. There's nothing illogical about that. It's not about their real intention, but the result. Whether they actually thought "This story isn't good, let's make it funny", isn't what matters, but the result of the movie felt like a film where the story is an afterthought. There's nothing illogical about that.
