I don't think it's the same as just throwing in inappropriate slapstick. There's a difference between a serious tone being deflated by inappropriate humour, and levity being used to give viewers some relief to stop things being too unrelentingly dark. It's a fine balance, and I think Shane Black pulled it off well.
It's not just some Marvel Studios mandate of "we need silly comedy." It makes sense for the tone of the Iron Man
films, and is consistent with Black's other work. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
