That list right there is a list of the most popular characters Marvel in the eyes of the general populace has hands down (granted, Spidey would have to be included to make the list complete and they haven't killed him yet). I think heroes being replaced is one of the most significant reasons for the drop off. Replacing well known heroes with new legacy characters is often challenging. DC has done it steadily over time (although reboots Rebirth/Flashpoint reversed that a little by bringing certain characters back.)

Marvel replaced many of their popular characters in a very short period of time. A large amount of change in a short period of time will often get people;s backs up.
