I just know they're going to have to come up with something to make audiences believe someone would try to poison their 'brother' to death, even if you didn't agree with his political views.
Haven't they hinted in recent interviews that it could be physical time travel?

It sounds much more likely to me in this story. Just send Kitty/Rogue/whoever to 1973 physically, then send them back.
