I always buy both, and sometimes Hotdog and Sight & Sound. Empire is not as good as it used to be.

I used to buy Empire alot back in the days. Now i occasionally buy it.
Still i have to admit that i am a bit annoyed at the apparant good reviews they give to Peter Jackson and Brian Singer. Mebbe cause they always have fond things to say to Empire or not.
But as journalists i don't feel that the Empire crew can mantain a degree of neutrality and more then often i nowadays DISAGREE with alot of their polls/reviews/news reports.

Back in 1999, Empire did an all-Star Wars issue (seriously, every single thing in the magazine) with a foreword by George Lucas. In the same issue, the film was reviewed. And after a review that more or less apologizes for the film (the 'It's just supposed to be fun, and it is fun, therefore it's good' mentality), Empire gave it four out of five.

Total Film, who did not have any relationship with Lucas, gave in two out of five. SFX magazine gave in three.

Precisely.
I mean i can understand them having those feelings of the original SW movies comeing back when they watch the prequels , but it's a filmmagazine for crying out loud. They are journalist first and fans second.

This is something i really hate about EMPIRE. In the end you can get different reviews that go a a screening of a movie but even so i do find that after giving big massive specials where they basically hype a movie to death , and afterwards they sorta screw everything up royally when they finally give a review that is completely NOT what you expect it to be.

And what i also do see with Empire is that when a sequel doesn't meet expectation , the following movie won't be featured as much as it's predecessor.
For example the matrix movies. They are all big hype and what not with Reloaded and then when revolutions comes out it's just a lame issue when they really do adress the "problems".
Well if they could see those "problems" early on why not adress them in the Reloaded issue ? Noooo.....they go all this big fuss in interviewing EVERY cast main cast member in the Reloaded issue and then for Revo nothing.

Bah.
And i won't even begin with their LOTR /King Kong whoring out and Brian Singer praising

Empire is the King of movie magazines ... nothing else comes close.

I do agree that they have review problems though ..... If memory serves they gave Attack of the Clones 5 stars!!

Yeah, and gave Spider-Man 4 stars in the same issue. Now, I don't think Spidey deserves 5, but it sure is a better film than AotC.

they gave?

no the reviewer gave it 5 stars.. use them as a guide not as written to what you think they should have got.

Yes, they gave it 5 stars.

The reviewer working for the magazine gave a verdict which Empire then accepted and printed. So Empire gave AOTC 5 stars.

At the end of the day its all about opinion but that is simply a crazy score to award to what is a very flawed film. They got caught up in the hype and did not give the readers an accurate reflection of the movie.

I but both and they both have their good points and bad points so i'm not gonna vote, there should have been a 'both' option.

IF I get one its EMPIRE, although I prefer the lighter tone of Total Film.

Recently I've got niether, I just read them in WH Smith or Tesco whislt I'm waiting for the missus. If they're packaged, I don't bother at all.

LOL, probably best not to open them just to read in the store.

I remember once being in the book section of Virgin Megastore, and there was a kid in school uniform lying on the floor, and he'd taken a book about sex scenes in movies off the shelf and was copying parts of it into his notebook. Just lying on the floor scribbling away like it was the normal thing to do.

On a completely unrealted note, do you reckon any critical establishments give a (positive) review without having seen the film first? Because some British reviews to me look like rehased synopsis/references to previous comparable work and, if its a Charlie Kaufman film, a self indulgent use of the word "weird"

Anyway, I prefer Total Film, because the Empire awards are the biggest suck up I've ever read of.
