Two big sets buoy 'Surfer'; 'Jungle'

Oct 11, 2007

The fourth quarter began with a bang as 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment's "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" became the top-selling and top-renting DVD its first week in stores.

Another new DVD release, Walt Disney Studios' Platinum Edition of "The Jungle Book," bowed at No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week ending Oct. 7, but "Silver Surfer," which debuted at No. 2, also was available in a two-pack with the original "Fantastic Four." Combined sales numbers put the summer theatrical hit slightly ahead of "The Jungle Book."

The two are the first in a string of high-octane new theatricals and polished-up classics heading to DVD in time for the holiday gift-giving season.

"Jungle Book" and "Silver Surfer" bumped the previous week's top DVD seller, Universal's "Knocked Up," to No. 3 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart.

Meanwhile, on Home Media Magazine's national DVD rental chart for the same week, "Silver Surfer" easily took the top spot in its first week, generating an estimated $9.5 million in rental revenue. "Knocked Up" got knocked down to No. 2, though it still generated a healthy $8.4 million, a drop of just 17% from its first-week take.

Making a surprisingly strong showing its debut week was the horror hit "1408," from Genius Products and the Weinstein Co. The film, which grossed $71.9 million in theaters, bowed at No. 4 on the sales chart and No. 3 on the rental chart its first week. The film generated $6.2 million in rental revenue, according to Home Media Magazine.

"Silver Surfer" also topped the Blu-ray Disc charts its first week out, while "Knocked Up" remained at No. 1 on the HD DVD charts for the second straight week. Both titles are exclusive to their respective high-def formats.
On a side note it's #1 in Sales in Canada and the #3 rental there:

#1 in Sales.
#2 Rental.

At least in Canada and i'm sure it's the same here.

Nice! How does this compare to the first movie's take?

BTW notice how they leave out Fantastic Four out of the title and just call it Silver Surfer?

Can you blame them, when they have four goofballs playing the FF. Something tells me that FOX (Dump FF to make Silver Surfer) is gonna pull a WB (Dump Superman to make JLA).

Nice!
The Fantastic Four 2 Pack is also in the top 20 and is also selling reasonably well.

This does not surprise me. I always felt most movie goers were waiting for the DVD, and it appears for once I was right. Looks like the movie will make $ 289 to 290 WW. Add add another $ 40 million in sales and rentals and you have $ 330 total from box office and DVD sales. Very nice. Add in toys and cable, and we are talking profit. 3rd movie here we come.

Good points but even your sales numbers may be low. I know I plan to give multiple copies as Christmas gifts this year and I don't think I'm the only one. I figure on a healthy amount of sales as December rolls around.

The Superman sequal deserves to be put on the back burner. You spend $ 270 to make a movie, and it barley makes $ 200 domestic, you deserve to be put on the back burner. FF 2 cost $ 140 less to make than SR. Goofballs ? I take exception to that term.

That only means that WB spent way too much dough on SR; it has no bearing on either film's quality and, in a perfect world, shouldn't effect it's chances for a sequel.

Fact is, SR obliterated FF2 in both box office and critical acclaim. It took in more money, more people saw it, more people liked it, but because it cost a lot more to make, it's not a "success." That blows, IMO.

Well I bought 2 copies so I contributed and if they end up releasing a longer/extended version then I'll get that as well. Hey Advanced peep either of the 2 other DVD threads and check out the editions I got, I haven't seen anyone on here with either of them and I think you will apreciate it.

K well I hope the DVD keeps brining in good numbers over the holiday, pretty sure it will.

Ummm.. FF is making money for Fox. Something Superman failed to do for the WB. So your execution is futile, as we all witnessed the SS really isn't much of a box office attraction. So what would all the self respecting suits at FOX do in such a mind twisting situation.. MILK BOTH FRANCHISES!

They would all then rejoice, pat each other on the back, shake a few hands here and there and ride off into the sunset in their exotic sports cars. THE END

i think that shows what great films all these marvel movies are to own. i mean seeing them in the theater is sweet, but they are pretty entertaining to watch over and over and with the additional footage included on the dvd's.

Fox got all these actors on the cheap for 3 films. The movies are making money so they'll finish up their contracts. I think FF3 must be on screen prior to 2011 even if they make a SS feature in between.

I think 2010 would be about right.

Looks like things are looking up in the world of Dvd and FF3 is just now on the horizon. Just gotta deal with that pesky SS guy.
