Default Heavy Rain - Light info appears and two vague screenshots.

David Cage talks about his work at Quantic Dream as part of the new 'TVG.TripleTap' feature series...
Quote:

Quantic Dream head honcho, David Cage, has spoken to TVG as part of a new feature series called TVG.TripleTap. He spoke at length about his writing and directing responsibilities at the Quantic Dream studio (of which he is also the CEO and Founder).

The interview is all part of TVG's new TripleTap feature series, the first article of which will go live next Wednesday the 16th January. The first feature in the series will focus on the 'Art of Storytelling' in videogames, including opinions on the matter from Rob Yescombe, Rhianna Pratchett and David Cage himself. All three have been involved in either games writing or directing on titles such as Haze, Heavenly Sword and Fahrenheit respectively.

During the interview with Cage, he let TVG in on some golden nuggets of information about the studio's current title under development, Heavy Rain. We were also lucky enough to receive a couple of exclusive screenshots of the game's "real-time virtual actors".

The two Heavy Rain screens show, up close and personal, the astounding visual detail that Quantic Dream has been able to give the game's characters. Cage spoke about what is required to create such lifelike facial characteristics in their animations:

"Today, everything is visual, so yes, the hardware helps a lot to reach the visual quality that becomes necessary. Virtual actors, especially, are for me the most important part. I see them as the vectors of emotion; I need them to be as believable as possible in their acting performance and emotional response. Quantic Dream has massively invested over the past ten years in this aspect by acquiring a Motion Capture system internally and working very hard on facial animation and advanced rendering systems in particular."

Cage also remarked on his different experiences in developing Fahrenheit and his current project, Heavy Rain: "Multi-layered plotlines are a pure nightmare to write. The writing of Fahrenheit has been incredibly difficult and painful for me, as I was writing a new format in its most complex dimension. My current project has been easier to write, which was a relief, as it means I start to have a better understanding of this specific form of interactive writing."

Unfortunately, Cage wouldn't go into details about Quantic Dream's enigmatic title for the PlayStation 3, saying only that gamers should "Expect to be surprised."

Keep your eye on TVG next week for the first in a line of new TVG.TripleTap features, which take an in-depth look at the important topics from the people that matter.
Take a look at these bad boys...

Those are the kinda graphics that can finally be compared to real life.

Yeah, but really focusing on the graphics could make for crappy gameplay.

Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy was a great game. It was one of the most original games I had played at that point and really wish they had made a sequel.

THe problem with Indigo Prophecy was the way the story evolved. Hopefully Heavy Rain learned from Indigo Prophecy (the guy who was responsible for Indigo Prophecy says that it got way too 'out there' and that he wouldn't repeat taht for his next game). It's like Silent Hill 2, it's more on an interactive novel than a video game. I'm so down for taht, especially if it really hits home with a good story.

Looks great, but I still need to find a copy of Indigo Prophecy (U.S. Fahrenheit)!

well, if that's in-game (which i'll bet it is, based on that tech demo they'd showed some time ago) then damn... this games graphics > everything... ever.

Indigo Prophecy was described best by none other than the late Evan: A failed attempt at something great.

The first half of the game was some of the most pathetic I've ever seen. Living out everyday life? Going to take some medicene?

I find the stand out point of the game's stupidity was listening to Agatha and actually having to stop and feed the birds. What the hell? Just tell me why I murdered someone! No! I don't want to close the drapes and light the candles! Oh god...

the first half of the game was the best. It was the final 3rd where things fell apart in the story

So getting a drink of water, turning on music, feeding birds, and thrusting the control stick to have sex with your girlfriend was the best bit of the game?

it was alot more than that. IP was original. It had an intriguing storyline up until the scifi stuff kicked in. It was an interactive film where there were plenty of choices and choices which affected the outcome of certain events. The game was fun and Im interested in seeing what the team has in store for Heavy Rain. I hope they eventually do a sequel to IP bc the 1 of the endings left it open for one

Here's the trailer. Really nice looking, controls look kinda similar to what Farenhight used when you tap buttons during cut-scenes. Kinda looks like it is suffering from dead eye syndrome though at 1:01 like Mass Effect had.

I personally loved the real world aspects... until the games plot fell apart.

You are lying to yourself. I promise you, you find it more fun going to get a real drink of water and feeling the reward of the ice cold liquid run down your throat. You enjoy the prospect of a nice, comfertable sleep, more than you enjoy the prospect of it in the game.

It wasn't much more than that. There were annoying joystick flicking moments, that were too distrascting to see what was even going on in the game.

And there was that book searching bit... that horrible book searching bit. The best bits of the game were the stealth levels as a kid, and they were frustrating, and dropped right down the second you had to play hide and seek of all things with a time limit. Why not just shout "The place is about to explode, get the hell out of here!"?

Just an awful game. The best bit was cleaning up the crime scene at the start.

Funny, I thought the kid stuff was the worst part of the game. You make it seem like all you did in that game was drink water. The best part of the game was that it was an interactive story and something I havent seen before. Like I said before, it had an intriguing and interesting story until the sci-fi stuff creeped up towards the end. Is it a classic? No. Is it one of the best games released in the past few years? Of course not. Doesnt mean its a bad game. I couldnt stop to put it down once I got started and I did enjoy it

You ca fins a better quality verson over at Gamersyde or whatnot.Looks really high quality, but it will take a well animated scene akin to their earlier stuff with the girl crying etc, to sell me on if they have really improved the model or not. Well obviously the model is higher quality, but it's all in how it comes together on screen.

Electro UK's view on this trailer:

1st part: Oh this looks pretty cool actually, nice a creepy. I loves me a good ol' mystery.

Then the first sign of a quick time event comes on: F**K! I can't wait to pour water into an ice cube tray, but it in the freezer, wait for it to freeze then put the ice in my drink in this game.

It looks like all or most of the action scenes might end up being QTEs. There's no way that scene is an isolated incident, so expect all of the big cinematic scenes to be QTE controlled.
