Default New Years Resolutions; 2009 Edition

We all make em, and most of the time we break em, but they're fun anyways.

What are your resolutions and goals for 2009?

A semi-colon is not a colon, bad grammar!

So to address this topic in the correct thread...

-Quit smoking
-Make a decision about grad school (I cannot decide on whether I should go for an MPA or MBA)
-Consider proposing to my boyfriend, though that won't occur until late in the year
-Finish at least one of the two novels I've been working on for four months

Oh, and maybe I'll leave this dreary place once and for all

I hardly make any New Year's resolution but this year, I'm motivated enough to TRY and commit to one:

I'd like to be able to be fluent enough in Japanese to enable me to go shopping at local stores without having to use sign language and looking like an idiot. So, my resolution is to take Japanese Language class.

Rosetta Stone has been working for me, though Japanese courses are harder than they sound.

My resolutions:

-To get a position summarizing screenplays for studios
-Learning to drive
-Being less lethargic and more proactive
-Continuing my math studies
-Letting go of the unnecessary
-Spending more time with the girl I like

^Do you think that's better than going to a class taught by native speaker? I looked up the word "Turkey" and it's so long and hard to pronounce.

Very hard to say. If you take a class, be prepared to learn to write in hiregana and katakana beforehand. Half of the introduction consists of pinning down those two, then moving on to learning simple words and sentences with some kanji mixed in for good measure. Personally, I find Rosetta Stone works well enough. You learn the pronunciations and they stick, so you don't sound like a foreigner who's never heard a native speaker talk before.

I would like to learn Tagalog. A lot of the people at work are filipino and I would love to be able to understand what they're saying, since most of it is about us.

I also know there's a lot of dialects, but Chibi do you know if there are any Rosetta Stone courses for tagalog?

Yup. I'm not sure how far it goes past the Level 1 introduction, but tagalog's one of the languages Rosetta Stone has available for learning.

It's funny. I had Filipino neighbors for four or five years, but I only just learned about tagalog and the fact that it's a national language in the Philippines earlier this month. But then again, that might have to do with my general ignorance about Filipino culture. I didn't even know what it meant to be Filipino 'til I moved from NYC to Las Vegas.

Tagalog is one of the easier Asian languages to learn. It's written pretty much the way it's pronounced and is very Spanish based. I know a lot of Latinos who pick up on Tagalog very fast.

I need to start using my Rosetta Stone more... I guess that will be my New Year's resolution for '09 since I'm moving to Japan soon.

I guess I'll go with Rosetta Stone first and see how that goes. However, I would love to know how to read Japanese since most signs here are in Japanese are in Japanese alphabets.

'bleed, you can pick Rosetta Stone up from the library. That's what I'll do. Did you learn any Korean at all... other than kimchee, that is?

I don't tend to make resolutions because I know I'll break them eventually.

Can I borrow your resolution? That's one I know I'll be able to keep.

I've gone as far as considering that stop smoking program for the DS haha.

To run a marathon, an injury prevented me for accomplishing this resolution in '08, already signed up for a marathon in May, just need to get the training done.

Finish an 8 or 10k race with a pace under 9 min/mile.

I don't believe in New Year's Resolutions. If I want to do something or have an issue I need to resolve for myself, I address it immediately rather than decreeing that I'll do it "sometime in the next year".
