Default Close Adaptations

What films do you think have remained pretty close to there source material when adapted to the big screen? This can be books, comics, TV shows etc

Batman & Robin was a near-perfect adaptation of the old 60s television show.

By close, do you mean as close as they could, or simply close?

I would consider the LOTR trilogy to be the closest anyone could get to the source and still deliver a top quality trilogy, but they made a fair few diversions from the source.

No Country for Old Men, and American Psycho were very close to their sources from what I remember. Though with the latter, the violence is more implied, rather than having scenes with graphic gore. Which was ok.

I thought David Fincher did a damn fine job of adapting Fight Club to film.

AbSOlutely

Also... Misery, American Psycho, Secret Window, The Mist, Sin City, No Country For Old Men, and I'll think of more later.

I expected more from the Mist, especially with the director...it was worth one viewing.

Yeah, it was OK. It was very faithful though, for the most part.

Also, it is worthy of a second viewing if you buy the special edition DVD, which allows you to watch the film in black and white, giving the film more of a B-movie vibe.

That's cool and strange at the same time.

A good adaption that wasn't close enough to the book is Bram Stoker's Dracula. I like it, I loved it even, but I would like to see a reimagining that is longer and less Keanu.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest are both exceptionally well adapted. I like the movies of both those books better though, but then again I like movies better than books anyway so there's no contest really

I always hated some people thinking, if the adaptation is simply 100% original source on screen, it's a great film. A good adaptation can't be measured by its point of similarities to the source, because it just doesn't make sense.

But to answer the question of the thread, I would consider Sin City and No Country For Old Men.

As for the best adaptations, my examples are The Godfather, There Will Be Blood, Adaptation, The Prestige and Fight Club.

American Psycho, Choke, Fight Club, 300, LOTR, Clockwork Orange, and 2001: A Space Odyssey was very close except that the added beginning with early mankind. Though Clarke helped him with the opening add in and Clarke loved it.

Yeah, this topic is a little weird. I mean, other than movies with a linear and short story being adapted page-for-page, it's a little difficult in determining or choosing films that remained close and if they were as close as they could get...and also a good movie.
